ZDZ 40 , what props are you using?
Hi everyone,
I have a ZDZ 40 set up in a DP 330L. The prop RCS recomended for the engine was their RCS Maple wood Bambula 20 X 10. We have been using this prop and it does give us unlimited verticals but they are slow and I feel the motor is capable of more. This prop is heavy and spool up time is slow and RPM coud be another 1000. I was thinking of a Pro Zinger or maybe a CF Mejzlik
in the 20 X 8 to 22 X 8 range. Just thought I would ask and see what others are using. Thanks in advance for your help.

ZDZ 40 Props
I have two ZDZ 40's. I run the ProZinger 20 x 10, works well, the Master Airscrew Scimitar wood 22 x 8 is a fast prop, but not the vertical. Menz 20 x 10 is a lot of load, but provides nice, constant speed pull, excellent braking. Master Airscrew 20 x 8 Scimitar is lots of rpm's, but no guts. Overall, I think the broader blades, and anything in the 7000 - 7400 rpm on the ZDZ is right on the torque curve...can't lose...

I have been breaking in my ZDZ 40 with a Zinger Pro 20 x 10 but it turns to fast, I am making a Menz look a like (Forgues) 20 x 10 and that should work out OK

I have the DP Extra with a ZDZ 40. The 20-10 Pro-Zinger seems to small. I found the best for my liking is a Pro-Zinger 22-8. It keeps the speed down. I have used a 22-10 Pro-Zinger with good results, but the engine only turns 6000. It stilll has long vertical lines but they are slow.

When all loosened up - the 22x10 Zinger Pro is a good prop - we get 6300 -best example .
7000+ rpm is a really good overall rpm to prop for --on 13-15 lb models-
I have run the Bambula 20x10 since it was introduced -and compared performance with all of the other props I bought for my 40's
This is a good un- and a bargain.
Ditto for the Zinger Pro's.
On my Sig Sukhoi on a piped can- my favorite tho was the 22x8 MenzS- . static rpm - just under 7000 but terrific pull in the air.

ZDZ 40
Zinger 20 x 10
7400 RPM
This engine with this prop is pretty potent. It seems to pull harder than my G62 with 22 x 8 prop. (older G62)
Once the engine is broke in, I plane to switch to a zinger 22 x 8 prop and see if there is a difference.

Sounds typical for that prop-tho I have had plenty of Doubting Thomases insist that it is not possible, as their xxx brand engine will not acheive that.
On a tuned exhaust we get even higher readings on those props.
I flew my Bucker with the G62 and the ZDZ40 - the results were similar in power but the G62 shook badly and I got rid of it -- Posthaste!

What tuned pipe
A question for Dick;
I noticed that you mentioned a tuned muffler. Is this the Amelung muffler that is in your Edge 540? I like the set up you show for this, looks clean. I would be interested in your muffler choice for this engine.
Tonyc
A note to y’all! I am an old customer of Dick Hanson. Back when he had the Tipo Surpass. This was a pattern airplane that used the OS 91 4 stroke and had retracts. Dick was kind enough to pass along some motor tips for the 91 4 stroke which helped me get the best performance form this motor. With this combination I was able to do a knife edge loop. I know today this is no big thing but a few years back a pattern ship just didn’t do that. Anyway when Dick talks I listen.

ZDZ40's First run
Well guys here is the first run! In fact it's still outside running
Attached is two tach reading Low idle and max throttle with approx 25 Minutes running. Idle is right at 2000 currently

Right on -
My latest 40 - is the tightest fitting and took more than a gallon before the Bmbula was happy at full revs .
Typically a litle sagging will occur on the new engines.
It is easy to want to run at max leaned power -but don't do it till it has some time on it.
Then be sure there is NO audible rpm drop on long vertical climbing.
I set my engines such that power obviously improves on verticals.
The engines just keep getting better using this apparoach.

Hey Jack:
Where'd ya get that tachometer?
Did Marconi lend it to you?
My buddy Alex has a similar looking device that I call the happy tach. Reads 1000 rpm higher than everyone else's tach.

Thanks Dick;
It has the same nature as my RCS 1.4. The ZDZ 40 ran for 1 hour 45 Minutes at 4,400 Rpm Just under 3/4 of a Gallon then the battery finally died. In between I'd give it bursts to 7K then back off to Idle. Even now the throttle response is very good. Only adjusted the high speed needle about an 1/8" clockwise and the Low about 1/16 to 3/32" counterclockwise. Right now the exhaust is very dirty (Black) mainly because of running 25:1 Petroleum 2 Stroke oil mix this way it's staying cooler. Another 4 Hrs of running and I'll install it on the CAP. Letting it sit then I'll see how it starts cold for the second run.

LOL No Diablo;
I've had that I think since tach's were introduced to flying it's an Old ACE. I calibrated it using the Digital Smart Tach so they both read the same.
Had some guys on another news Group think my YS's weren't turning what I said.

I built my first tach -which I still have - from a Heath kit.
I have new tachs now- and have had different types from different makers -etc..
If the oldest one is simply calibrated as per instructions - it is within the same 100 rpm as the $100 ones or the Futaba tx tach.
The new ones read more easily - tho some are easily confused by bright sunlight etc..
They usually shift slightly if the batteries are down but with good cells - I have yet to se any of the cheap tachs -,which are off 200 rpm.

Hour 2 of the Run
Idle is at 1950 smoothing out. BTW the Engine started on the second Flip after turning it over about ten times with the choke closed till I felt the kick back. Then opened the choke kept throttle at Idle and she fired right up.

Full Throttle 2 Hr
Engine is currently running in the work shop. Full Throttle holding the Tach shooting the picture is just a tad shakey. Full Throttle has stabilzed to 7020 with the Bambula 20 X 10
#24
3+ Hours now
Idle is still at 1950K and Max throttle hit 7120 but stabilizes at 7050. Still running in excess of 25+-35% Penzoil Petroleum based 2 Stroke oil. in 86% Octane Unleaded gas. Temp is 54 Deg F.
Prop is still a 20 X 10 Bambula
Engine temp is still below 140 deg F. as I put a Meat thermometer on it and it barely reaches 100. I can touch the head so I know it's staying cool.

Almost 4hrs
Took the Plug out and cleaned it. Changed to a New 1 .5 Gallon Jug this one is mixed with Klotz synthetic. Engine is still running now but with a 270 Ma pack 4.8 v. Max Rpm after 1 Minute warm-up is 7140 and Idle dropped to 1830 adjusted back to 1920. Exhaust is somewhat clean with small traces of black residule from the petroleum based oil run.
Enough Posting for now as Snow is expected again tonight so I may have it in the air in about a week. As the field will be to wet until this ridiculous winter finally leaves. I'll let it run until the battery expires then it's time to mount it on the aircraft.
