rvd,
I thought everybody was just kiddin' round. I just wanted to know what I could use this engine for (in a plane cuz I don't have a boat).
It seems there might have been equal and/or better alternatives. But. . . I have the engine now, bought and paid for, so I can't throw away almost 300 clams. Outcast had a suggestion on a Cap, maybe I'll try that (maybe too much plane for me though). Thanks to all, opinions and experiences are what I wanted. Some with personal experience say it's great, some don't. I'll find a use for it for sure.

I wonder how one would do on a -really- big bipe? TONS of lift, and who cares if you have to clamp a bench vise to the tail to get balance. I think in the 'scale-like' flying environment, where your intention was to make large, deliberate and graceful maneuvers it might be just the thing.

Oh, tack in a few things for Gas, as well if you're a poor guy like me. First is maintenance (mags for many of you). Second is mixing gas/oil (i'm an apartment guy-no weed-whacker to burn the extra av-gas-oil on weekends slaughtering weeds). Third is extra radio gear in the form of a kill switch. Fourth is the gas-conversion of fuel parts. Fifth is (if you're fully glo-enabled only) you have to have some gas-oriented field gear.

79oz is heavy, however. So you resolve this by putting it on a non-uber-performance airplane. Hence the bipe mentioned above. Something like a HUGE tigermoth, or maybe a Swordfish model? Balsa USA has three models that this engine would be fine in: Their SuperCub, their Cub and their Sopwith Pup, all in 33%.

I guess we all bow to RVD's awesome knowledge now. You know there's nothing wrong with being younger. Maybe I'm a punk and maybe you're older than my father, but really I think these people are here to help. And I'm just a poor boy here. If it was what I had, I'd mount it on whatever airframe would hold it safely and still fly well. Some of us don't have to CAD-design all the accessories into all of our monstrous aeronautical money-vacuums. The committee of friendly folks here is enough.

And they don't need to retract their words. They have a good heart. Do you?

Default Javven has the right idea

Javven has the right idea when he suggests a biplane. Although it would not have to be a biplane, but rather a plane with a short moment on the nose. Typically scale biplanes have short nose moment and you would actually put the extra weight to use instead of compensating for it. I have been bench running a 3250 for an Ultrasport 1000. (power to weight should match that of the previous lawnmower pic). I did have the typical transition problems with the stock carb, changed to a perry mega carb, and the problems went away ($35.00). As for being a boat anchor, big tigres are heavy, but they are designed and built for RC, to withstand a lot of punishment and run forever, not to edge the yard once a week. Mixing your own fuel is the way to go, as the big tigres like to drink quite a bit. Definately break the engine in with at least a gallon and follow the tuning instructions.

The bipe sounds like a good idea. Also consider the Giant Stinger from Lanier. I like my Tigre's very much. They run great with very little fooling with them. I do run Perry carbs and they work great. I own many different brands/sizes of engines and more often then not you have to work with what you've got. I believe the question was related to what is an appropriate airplane for a ST4500(?). Maybe we should help him work with what he has instead of slamming him for what he has. I have a G62 in my Giant Stinger, so the weight should not be a problem. This is a good plane and is easy to fly not to mention relatively inexpensive. Good luck with your Tigre!

Default What's a SuperTigre G-4500 good for?

Hi,

I just spent $500 dollars in upgrades to my planes, a new radio, and kit. What does an extra $5 per flying session for fuel mean compared to these costs?...nadda! If I had a 4500 ST, I wouldnt worry about fuel costs. Some guys on these lists see a picture of a $7000 plane and yell "buy" before the page is done loading!

ruff ruff

Everybody has their opinions.. The 4500 can be used for many types of planes. I have seen them on large cubs, stinsons, warbirds, extras etc.
You have to figure out what the plane will balance like with it knowing what it weighs. They are powerful , rugged ,can swing large propellers and make a good engine for giant scale aircraft.

There's too many self proclaimed "experts" in this hobby that can ruin it for other hobbyists by giving them the wrong advice.
The majority of these self proclaimed "experts" that label these engines junk or boat anchors are usually the ones that never owned one and don't have first hand experience with them..

And javven about that comment you made about bowing to my knowledge..(go ahead and bow if you like.. hehe) I'm here to help out fellow modelers, give them advice that might save them alot of frustration and money. I'm not here to argue. I would never post a reply on a thread if I wasn't sure about what i was saying..
I have alot of knowledge that I am willing to share with everyone that can make their lives easier in this hobby.
I'm a straight up kind of guy and most of my posts will show that. If you or anyone doesn't like it then skip the replies that has the name "rvd" next to it.. that's that..

Default To rvd..the guy with a lot of knowledge

Well...in reply to rvd, I have owned many 3 ST4500's and they were/are plagued with problems. Like the ASP engines (I've owned many of those too rvd)...some are OK. some are not. The ST4500's are plagued with problems such as connecting rods that break, as the material was too brittle, wrist pins breaking were another chronic problem. ST3000 was an engine I had a lot of good runs with and many people don;t like those either, I did. I didn't like the 4500...and i did use them. Sorry to let you down rvd...I am afraid I know what I am talking about.

LOL !!

BIG DEAL you didn't like it..

Take 100 people and let them all purchase the same GM or Ford cars.. Lots of them will have problems and lots will not..
That's how it goes. And believe me I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Check e-bay. Found some good deals for them there. You can also look in the classifieds on this forum.

You could try the Giant Aeromaster by Great Planes. I have just purchased this set up two weeks ago. I have not flown it yet but the person I purchased it from said the G4500 ST pulled this plane all over the sky and would fly knife edges for days.
Plane seems to balance out fine. Good combination.
I cant wait to put it in the air. People talking down about this engine are just jealous because they don't have one.

Default ST 4500

I will help out with the problem. Someone make me a great deal on a 4500 and all the problems (weight, expensive fuel, etc.) will go away.

Default SuperTiger Engines

Really all the SuperTigers I have owned, I got them all to run real good. Idle was superb. Starting was excellent. Just the 4500 I think would take a person to the poor house fast, running it on glow fuel. I may be wrong though- it would not be the first time!! Thanks Captinjohn

1) A paper weight
2) doorstop
3) Boat anchor
4) melt it down and make an o.s.

I dont have any other uses for a super tigre, more trouble than their worth, good for deadstick training i guess, as they only run for about two minutes as at a time......lol
