3W 100 and SDC 80 carb
Has anyone tried this carb to see if it might cure the infamous
non-existent carb issues. Out of 2 3W 100's, one is fine and the
other is a pain in the butt. The "good" one belongs to someone
else and I'm not even going to ask if I can borrow his carb for
a few flights.

RE: 3W 100 and SDC 80 carb
Otter you old rascal you've got a good memory. I did buy another DA 100 and
put it in my new Carden. This is an old style 3W that I'm putting in a beater plane
to practice new stuff low to the ground so a brain cramp won't hurt so bad. Figured
I'd get little for it from a sale so might as well use it. You pointed the way and I'm
still on track.
bob_nj, While this engine runs pretty decent it still has some low speed transition
issues and likes to sputter slightly in a roll. A steep climbing turn to the right will
also cause a flat spot although I'm suspecting an airflow disturbance causing this
one as it's so predictable in a particular attitude. Nothing real serious so it's more
of an annoyance than anything. Have a brand new SDC laying around from the
old engine building days so thought I might try it.

RE: 3W 100 and SDC 80 carb
Carb issues in general are diaphragm/cowl pressure issues. If you put a rebuild kit in the Tillotson carb it behaves like a new Walbro. All the diaphragm carbs work the same way. And they all benefit from using the 3W style intake horn that plumbs the diaphragm vent tube to the air inside the venturi stack. And this fix works on all engines and makes of carb. The only other "carb" issue is manifold/crankcase air leaks. If you have leaks, the carb mixture can never be set properly and you'll chase needles forever. If you're suspect an air leak, send the engine to one of the distributors that can pressure check the lower end.
