Default ZDZ 50NG versus ZDZ 60RV

I am contemplating a WH Edge 540. This plane is designed around the 50CC class and will balance with servos in the tail with a G62. The planes are coming out around 17.5 lbs. I am at a loss as to which motor to get.. I have read all I can on the subject and no one has really had the answer I was looking for. Some of the literature I have read states the 50NG to have more power that the 60RV.. BUT, the 60RV being 10cc's larger seems to me would swing a more useful prop size.. When looking at the calculated HP figures the 50NG is showing 5.7HP, the 60RV at 5.4HP and the 80RV at 8.1HP... Seems the CC increase would be a more linear rise and that the 60RV should be more in the 6.5HP range... Does anyone have any actual prop, RPM and Thrust calculations to accurately compare these 3 engines.. The weights of the 50NG and the 60RV are within range but the Power is what I am looking for.. Would like to see a 18lbs plane RTF with 35lbs of Thrust on hand..

Any insight would be appreciated on this endeavor...

Rick

Default RE: ZDZ 50NG versus ZDZ 60RV

Hi Rick,I own a ZDZ 60 with a Bisson Pitts muffler on it.It has 4 or 5 gallons through it.I started with a Bolly 22/10 carbon prop RPM 7400.I put on a Mejzlik 24/10 RPM 6300.The Mejzlik pulls very hard and the engine is extremely quiet with this prop.I feel the Bisson muffler is somewhat restrictive so a better muffler may yield better performance. The engine is still breaking in and may get a little stronger yet.I don't believe there is a 50cc engine that will turn these props at these rpms' with the same muffler. There is a DA 50 in our club and I know it can't turn the same prop nearly as well.My ZDZ 60 is on a 19 to 20 lb Extra and although it's not an extreme powerhouse at that weight it is very strong. If your looking for crazy HP go with the 80.At 17 or 18 lbs I think you will be very pleased with the 60 which I believe is much stronger than The ZDZ 50.

use the 60 - the 50 has more HP on tuned systems -but you want best torque on simple exhaust -

I really like my 50NG but I can't imagine it being more powerful than the ZDZ 60. My engine turns a Zinger 22-8 at 7400 rpm. I fly it on a 15 pound CAP 232. My concern with the ZDZ 60 is the weight, the engine is based on the ZDZ 80 and I believe that it is about 1 pound heavier than the ZDZ 50 which could be a good thing if the plane will come out tail heavy with the 50.

Thanks guys for all the replies.. I am pretty well convinced on the ZDZ 60.. I really like the disc valve on the New ZDZ rather than the reed block.. Also have heard nothing but good things about them as far as power and reliability... Looks like the 60 it is..

Thanks all,
Rick

Rick,
The 60 is a very nice combo with the Edge 540T.
Swings a bigger prop slower for less noise and more thrust.
The power to weight is very close for both, with the 50 having just a slight edge.
The 60 will make this up in torque.
You'll love the Wild Hare Edge 540T, but be carefull, wabbits breed!
Got three Wild Hare planes now and waiting for number four!
Tom will always treat you right!
Can't buy a better plane for the money.

What length standoffs does the 60 require in the WH Edge? Also do you have any pics from the side showing how much of the engine hangs out of the cowl? THis looks like the setup I am going to get and it appears it will be a potent combo.. Thanks again for all the help,

Also does the ZDZ 60 come with the Bing carb or a Walbro? Jsut curious, I cant find any specific info on the carb and they do not list a Carb trumpet for the 60 only the 50 and the 80..

MIght have to wait till I get it in my hands to see....

Rick,
I used a 1- 1/16" standoff for my setup.
My ZDZ 60 has the Bing carb, its also a older one, more cooling fins than the new one.
Heres some pics of the cowl. I have the Supersonic pitts muffler setup.

I have a ZDZ 60 on a Wildhare 28% Extra Special,, it isn't fully broken in yet, it is turning a Menz S 24x8 ,, 6850 on the ground,, I love this engine, my Wildhare will come out around 18 pounds,,, I love it, You turn choke on, let it burp once, cut choke off, and it starts on the 4-5 flip EVERY time not most of the time, It torquerolls the wildhare at about 1/4 throttle, and it pulls it out great,, I love this combo and when I get my play money back up I will have the wildhare edge/ZDZ60 combo also,,, Go with the ZDZ60
