Default Four Star & G38

Will be putting a G-38 on my newly finished four star 120 kit. Want to cowl in the engine and need help finding a fiberglass cowl that might work. Will build a wood two piece if I can't find a fiberglass cowl. Stans Fiber tech has a cap cowl that might fit on the 60size but have not found a larger one.

I would love to hear peoples opinion on this combo. I have been thinking about a 4*120 with a G26.

I look forward to hearing about your setup.

You might want consider the prop clearance in your decision. Tail up on a 120 will have 11 to 12” ground clearance at the prop. A G-38 is likely to require a 20” diameter prop. The airplane would look silly with baby carriage wheels.

Additionally the all up weight will likely be less than 15 pounds. At 15 pounds 25 to 31cc engines are normally used.

More horsepower also requires greater structural integrity.

The conversion forum contains good information about modifications necessary for gas engines in a 4* 120.

I would like to see the cowl FS has for the 4 Star 120. I built one with a US 41 motor and a Great Planes Cap 60 cowl. It was/is a blast to fly and made a great combo. It does have a little taller/stronger LG. It has been sold twice and is still going strong and flying well. I'm now flying a 120 with a very nice running G26 and it too flys great and is a wonderful fun fly combo. My 2 Cents about that. Brian

Hmmm
The FS web site says the 4* 120 cowl is a Cap 60 cowl. I'm not sure about the prototype. I put one of those on a 4* 120 3 years ago. (smile) Brian

Hello All,
We have recently finished the mold for a Cap style cowl for the 4 Star 120. Member 737 does have the first one out of the mold. Prior to that we only offered a cowl for the 4 Star 60. We have also just finished the mold for the 4 Star 40 kit and ARF. We have photos of them on file and are working on adding the photos to our website. I have not added photos to RCU before and don't know how to do it at this time. Email us for pics at sales@fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com. Thanks.

I switched my 4* 120 landing gear to the Hanger 9 120 size. This gave me about two more inches for a bigger prop.
I have a Toro 25CC conversion with a APC 17/8. I'm getting 7900 RPM with Blue Marble Ashless 50:1.
