DA-50 on BMB canister test results
My 28% WH Edge 540 is on the heavy side at 18.25 lbs and i was looking for more power when i replaced my slimline pitt muffler by BMB tuned canister.
Here are the results:
Menz 22x8: 7080 RPM, same RPM for the Pitt or the canister.
MEnz 22x10, 6450 on canister and no RPM available for the Slimline
Mejzlick 23x8 6450 rpm on Slimline pitt and 6650 on the BMB canister
Belray H1R, 40:1
All readings have been taken after one flight with the engine hot.
header 15cm long as per BMB recommendations.
Conclusion,
there is no real rpm gain with the can over the Pitt muffler on the DA-50 BUT, less noise & better throttle response and no real weight penalties for the can. only 0.5 oz heavier for the can and header than Slimline pitt.
The most important thing i have seen is the engine runs colder with the can. That should improve the engine's life.
Note: The BMB canisters are tuned for 5500 to 6800 rpm.

If you were looking for power gain only, you could have went with the stock DA muffler. I picked up 200-300 rpm on most of the props I tried, plus it weighs 5 or 6 oz. LESS than the Slimline Pitts. I also noticed the engine seemed cooler with the stock muffler. I think the wrap around pitts mufflers really hold the heat in around the jug....... Stock muffler is a bit louder than the pitts, but not as loud as a G62/B&B muffler. I would say right in the middle. Not offensive at all.
I'm putting together the 33% AM Yak/ 3w80 combo and going with a canister. First one...............can't wait to hear what it DOESN'T sound like.

RE: DA-50 on BMB canister test results
Noise is the major problem for rc-pilots here in europe. On many rc airfields here only electrical powered planes/helis are allowed. Planes with common Slimline and Pitts mufflers from the US will be grounded after the first flight. Even on airfields with gas engine permission. So the major issue of european manufacturers of canisters and tuned pipes is noise reduction. That's the reason why european canisters are not designed for maximum power. The power of an engine mostly is not the problem. Actually every 100ccm engine provides enough power for a 2,6m aerobatic plane.
The additional advantage of the short headed BMBs especially with DAs is the excellent transition which is not so good with some KS and MTW canisters with 25 - 27cm long headers.
I fly a new DA100 with BMB 60mm comptition tunes pipes with an Engel carbon prop 28*14 on a CARF Yak 2,6: 1200 - 6000 rpm (7 flights so far), unlimitd verticals with a bit more than 50% throttle, excellent throttle response.

RE: DA-50 on BMB canister test results
hi,
thanks for the positive statements!
Our muffler and cans are developed for min. of noise and max of power with very short headers and.....a cool engine!
That issue is for a long engine life very important.
The RPM range for the muffler is 5.500 - 6.600 RPM; for the tuned pipes 5.300 - 6.800.
Another RPM range is not state of the art for people where must fly silence but..... with maximum of power (for example: competitions pilots in europe)
Our system are designed for:
- short (very short!) headers (no pinalty for weight and broken headers)
- very good throttle response to fly unlimeted 3D and pattern style (no hole, no hysterese, no jumps) especially for engines with valve system :-))
- max. of RPM range
- max. of power
- min. noise
- "hard work"...and long life
Your positive statements give us more power and we see that the way was correct.
Thanks.

homemade tank plate
Tha last pic here shows a stoper that i installed at canister rear, because the coupler do not want to stay on the header without it.

Thanks for the pics. I may have to try that on my WH Edge as I appreciate the noise level of most cans as opposed to most Pitts styles. Can you tell me what landing gear you are using? I like that much better than what is on my plane. I've used the standard aluminum and the Graph Tech. Thanks for any info!

Hi Scoubidou,
your engine is run in....und comes better and better.
After complet break in (after 30 - 40) change the prob size (bigger; for example: 24 x 10 Engel super silent).
Your power goes better and the noise too.
Our muffler work very well in the range between 5.300 - 6.500 RPM. Lower for bigger engines, higher for small engines.
The DA50 with our 70mm "X" can work with the big prob (24 x10) very nice.
Check it.

RE: DA-50 on BMB canister test results
Hi Andy
I am glad to see you here I have tried Menz 24x8 but i did not like with the pitt muffler. I fly IMAC 60% and 3D 40% of my time and 24x8 prop is a bit to much prop. I prefer 23x8 or 22x10 prop to run in the 6500-7000 RPM range since my plane in one the heavy side with 18 pounds.
Noise in not and issue at my field.
oil ratio: Belray H1R 40:1

RE: DA-50 on BMB canister test results
Hi Scoubidou,
oh yes ...for pattern style you need more power then 3D...especially when it is storm.
But: with the BMB muffler you can fly bigger probs as with other muffler...more Newton Meter (in the correct RPM range).
One prob for 3D and pattern style is difficult, of course.
Many pilots in Europe fly the DA 50 with BMB 70 "X" can and ...the 24x10 engel prob with very good results for both...pattern and 3D.
But when you need more power: tuned pipe!
DA 50 with our 60mm pipe and the 24 x10 engel prob: 6.800 - 6.850 RPM.
Thats a lot of power!

ANDY,
What BMB would you recommend for BME 116 swinging Mejzlik 25-12S Three blade on "advanced" IMAC aircraft (Aeroworks YAK54)?
Do you have any fight experience wih the BME 116?
