DA 100 and AMT tuned pipe help
I am considering doing a DA100 and AMT tuned pipe combination. Prop will be a Mezlick 27x10 or a PT 27x10. I am at sea level. I have no experience with tuned pipes. What lengths should i be looking for? Any other info is also appreciated.
Thanks

RE: DA 100 and AMT tuned pipe help
Its not AMT, but I would give a heavy look to those ES Composite tuned pipes for the 100. Ask Pizza about them. Yes they are more expensive, but the set of headers and pipes is within a few ounces of the regular stock mufflers, so zero weight penalty for running full pipes! Besides that, not sure about the AMTs but the KS 1060s run well on the DA, DA can set you up with all info.

RE: DA 100 and AMT tuned pipe help
I am getting a good price on a used set of AMT pipes. They are sold by RCshowcase for zdz engines. I dont see why they wouldnt work for a DA.

They will work for the DA I am sure, but will probably be on your own tuning wise. I would ask Dick H as he has a good working knowledge of the AMT pipes and can probably get you going in the right direction.

RE: DA 100 and AMT tuned pipe help
tuned pipes need to match a rpm and pressure
so - the 100 size (100cc) is fine on the AMT -but trying to run at the lower rpm a 27x10 will operate in, will cause a problem.
This pipe likes to operate in 7000 rpm range--with a header of about 11".
the right prop to run with the 100 is a 26x10 which allows 7000- minimum
you can add longer header but Ireally don't think you will like the results
also you can't run smoke - if you do run at lower revs - you are going to notice a stumble or flat spot at about 3000.
Iwould opt for some cans which are mildly tuned or NOT tuned at all if you aspire to a lot of prop hangin--JMB makes some cans -mufflers only which are quite good at any realistic rpm range - no power boost over open stack but very quiet.

RE: DA 100 and AMT tuned pipe help
Dick,
Thanks for the reply. I do intend to do alot of prop hangin so maybe an AMT tuned pipe is not the way to go. Would it be the same problem with any other brand tuned pipe?

Dick
I'm trying to squeeze some extra power out of the engine since the 35% yak that its going in is reported to weigh in at around 30lbs. Would it be better if I try tuned cans?
Thanks

Just stuff a zdz 160 champ in in and that will solve your power problems, on stock mufflers it will weigh what a DA and cans will. Food for thought, I have wanted to try that combo for a while now. I think people are getting them 28-29lbs with cans. Carbon gear and wing tube can make up a good bit.

RE: DA 100 and AMT tuned pipe help
My 160 is the super, which is heavier than the old style champ. A local fellow has the 35% with a 3W 106 and cans, its 28.5lbs and flys really well. Its unlimted power, but not ballistic. You can pick up a good used (and seen a few new ones) zdz 160 for around $1000-1100 (one in the swap shop for about ~1050 or so). Slap a 30x10 on it and geddy up. The 160 is 6.5lbs and the DA 5.8 lbs, so the zdz is only 8oz lighter, so with some basic math a 160 on stock mufflers is probably a few ounces lighter than the DA on cans.

I think i will stay with my DA 100 and see how it comes out. If i decide to go cannisters, which brand and model is the best? With a reasonable cost ofcourse..

MTW cans from DA, I ran the MTW 75s on my DA and they did great. No real power increase, but quieter. If you just want to 3D it, I would use stock mufflers and save the weight.

I think i will stay with the stock muffler and save some money. I mainly do 3D stuff anyways. I'll just buy some carbon stuff to make the plane lighter.

RE: DA 100 and AMT tuned pipe help
I'm running my da50 with MTW75K that da sells. It´s the same for da100. It really performs well very quiet and good power balance. My engine performs very well at 3d revs and very good at top power swingin a 22x8 mejzlik at 7200 rpm. Idle setup is easy and stright away. Engine runs smooth with no coughs and transition is awesome. I really recommend it.
