Hey, The template included in the back of the manual is NOT even close to working for the mounting hole patern.
Anyone else have this problem ?
Does anyone have the correct template ?

Thanks,

Jim

Yes the template is crap it doesn't match. Some engines have been supplied with a template that is ok. Also be aware that if you are using a prop that has a thick centre like Menze Prop, the centre bolt for securing the prop is not long enough and you will sooner or later strip the threads.

Get a longer bolt high tensile bolt, available from Western Hobbies.

Had same problem on My Patty before switching to DL-50.
I used the measurements instead of the pattern.
Also beefed up inside of firewall with 1/8in plywood after drilling wrong holes from pattern.

If anyone finds that they have drilled the holes using the template, and it happens to be wrong, then it's a simple matter of pluging the hole with hardwood dowel and epoxy it in sand it down when dry and re-drill. That is what I had to do and it worked fine.

Hi I just bought one of these Thor 45 engines & from what I read on here Iam a little confused. No. one has guys been running these engines with the stock Ign module or is it a must to get the one from western Hobbies. No. two I too can't get this RDJ8J plug but was told it crossed with a autolite will this be the same or do I need the rdj8j plug. No. 3 from what I read here there been major inprovements in the motor is there anybody out there that been running this with good results.

I ran this engine with the stock ignition for quite some time. It works well, just a little more sensative on the carb tuning and prop size. The ignition and pitts muffler are improvements to a motor that runs good. It will be easier to start, tune and the transition will be better with the bolt on goodies.

Yes you can get advanced ignition and plug from western hobbies. But by that time your over $400.
DL-50 is less money with all goodies.

obo,
I had some problems with the stock ign and plug at the get go.I exchange the stock ign for a new one and that helped but it still had a miss at 2/3 throttle.I tried a another torch spark plug from hp but it ran worse.I went ahead and ordered a new auto advance ign and champion plug from jim at western hobbies.I was curious when I got it and tried the new plug with the stock ign and it runs great. Not a miss one on three flights today.Throw that stock plug away and get a ngk or champion and give it a try.good Luck

tailwheel, he didn't say DA-50 but DL-50. It's a different engine. It's basically a cheaper version of the DA-50. There's a big thread for the DL in the gas engines forum. People have reporting great results with it, comparable to the DA but much cheaper. The US supplier is dlusa.net

It's a GREAT engine!!!
Very little tuning out of box. Broke in with 20-8 prop.
Now swinging 22-8 on 25% Patty Wagstaff with ease.

This engine does run. I think the problem I had with it is that elavation is too high 4200-4500 feet.
It ran great in Las Vegas Nv. and in Salina Ks. while visiting parents. I think we called Salina airport and they said elavation was around 1200 feet.

Hey Jim I have been reading about some people having glitching problems with this engines. I know that the possible of having glitching is with any gas motor I been flying gaser for 30 yrs. My concern , is this motor prone to have glitching more so than others. Also my other electronic Ign. like C&H are in a metal case could this aid in keeping glitchs down seeing that the Thor Ign is not in a metal case.

Thanks Bob

TO THE PEOPLE AT WESTERN HOBBIES i recently purchased a new ignition to upgrade my one on a thor45 that i purchased from hobbypeople set it up as per the instructions that came with it and man it came to life set it up at 31 degrees and wow! totally fixed my brand new sick motor i never touched the needles and with the stock ignition would spit and cut out at full throttle put your system in and now it's a whole new engine. they had the timing set at about 22 degrees?? maybe thats why i was getting reverse running? they still have not answered my e-mail???? and your pitts muffler is a great setup! thanks again!!

Gave my Thor her first run tonite !
Took a while to get her to pop, but then she ran REAL nice.
Stopped her to adjust the carb a tad and restarted with a single flip.
I think this is gonna be a sweet little engine for $299.00 !!!

[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN3bFfwCJoI[/link]Here is a short video of the run.

So are you saying the stock ignition now works well at the 31 degree timing?
