Default What Gas engine for DP 330L????

Hi Guys, I don't mean to start anything or ofend anyone or any company. I have been flying for about 15 years and also fly heli's . This will be my frist gas engine and I am not sure what size I should get? The specs on the plane are--
Dave Patrick 330L
wing span 78 in
Wing area 1,220 sq. in
length 74 in
Weight 12 to 13.5 lbs
I would like to get one that would have the power to hover . I was thinking of a DA50 or GT62 (beacuse of price) but with all the other engines out there and the price's I am lost in which one. I asked one guy and not to start a war wont say who but he thought the G62 might put to much wing load . He suggested a Brillile GT46 the price is very inviteing. Any thoughts from anyone that has a plane close to this size and has a gas engine on it would be greatly appericated. I also have a smoke system to put on it . Thanks for your time .
Dick

I had a Sig SunDancer with a Fuji 64, I thought it was a bit too much for it. I'd go for a 45~50cc.

Any of the lightweight 40cc or 50cc engines should work fine: DA-50, ZDZ50 or 40, Brillelli 40 or 50. This airframe is built very light so I would stay with a lightweight engine such as the ones listed and stay away from heavy engines such as Zenoah G-62.
If you have any real concerns give Dave Patrick a call, you can get the number at his website, also he has info on this airplane there.

Well the guy you asked was right.. unless it's a lightened G-62 probably be hard to balance with it. But really a G-62 on a 78" plane is was overkill.

The Brillelli 46 will hover your plane around 1/3 throttle and keep the weigh down nicely. The new 50 would be nice too.. but I cant see spending the extra money for a light plane like thsi one.

dickal14712,

That Brillelli 46cc GT will be nice on the front of your DP Extra 330L. I think you'll enjoy the power, weight, and how smooth the engine runs. Let us know how it goes.

Do you know what version of 330 you have? If I remember right, DP had at least 3 runs of these. I have had 2, one from each of the first 2 runs. I had one with a brison 3.2 in it, and one with a Taurus 3.2 in it. Both of my planes weighed right around 16 1/4 pounds. I know the 3rd run was lighter, but I bet that with a 40-50cc gasser it is still going to be over 15 lbs. Personally, if you can afford it, I would get a Brillelli 50 for it. If not the 46 would probably be ok, but I doubt it would hover at less than 1/2 throttle. Either engine would probably be fine for it though. Oh, btw, if you are using single aileron servos, be sure you use good metal gear servos on it. Some of older DP Extras had flutter issues. Good luck!!!

If yours has 2 servos per wing, you have one of the latest versions. I do believe that is the lightest, and either of the engines mentioned should work fine. If you want digital any of the hitec metal gear servos should work fine. Anything from the 5645 series and up would be fine. If you go that route you will probably have to program them to work together and not fight each other. If you choose not to go digital you can gang 2 of the 645s together without any trouble. I have done this on a number of planes and find that particular servo holds up real well for putting 2 on an aileron. I would stay away from anything that is not metal geared. Hitec has had problems with vibration and gear stripping on their Karbonite geared servos, when paired with gas motors. Good luck!

dickal14712,

Man, that new 52PRO gasser that Adam has looks pretty nice. I'd rather have a Brillelli engine but looks like a good choice for your DP Extra 330L.

I have a LS-52 Pro Twin, it's fantastic, it's become my favorite engine, I just ordered another one I like it so much. I ran my LS-100 Pro Twin for the first time today, I have it in a Lanier Yak 54 87 incher, more power than I think I'll ever use. I have 4 videos up on RCU videos of the LS-52.
