I paid $525 for mine...

Then $50 for the BME muffler...then realized it would be too loud then bought the J+A Peacekeeper for $100...

Default BME 50

Hello finnz

Thank you for engine info .

Any one put one of these engines on a H-9 Cap 1/4 ? Probably to heavy for this size plane . I would like to try a gasser on this plane , just not sure which one yet .

Thanks
Doug

Default BME 50 weight

Hi Stomper,

The "latest" 50 being shipped weighs 3lbs 14.5 - 15.5oz(depending on your mount) with J&A muffler, mount and ignition(no battery).

The earlier 50's weighed about 3 oz more.

Default Difference in weight

I did know, but I don't remember for sure. I think it was a difference in the prop hub, or something like that. I'll see if I can find out for sure.

Kieth ,BME, started machining the prop hub to be a bit lighter as well as using lighter harder like the nuts and bolts that 3W and DA use.

This engine would be awesome on the 1/4 scale cap. I have the BME44 on it and MAN is it smoooooooth. The 50 weighs about the same as the ZDZ 40 which other have used on this plane.

Good luck

Jeff

Default BME 44's smooth??

Hi Jeff,

My BME 44 wasn't very smooth, at least no where nearly as smooth as my Taurus 2.6, but I've heard the 50's are a bunch smoother than the 44's.

Well, I can see you're going to be a valuable new member of this site that's going to add a lot of constructive input. I'm guessing this type of post is going to be typical for you and probably why you don't publish your e-mail address.

I apologize for publishing this publicly.

Just got this info from BME.

Weight 3.0 lbs bare

Dimensions are almost exactly the same as the 44cc and uses the same muffler.

Thrust is best with a 21x8 or 22x8 menz standard at 27lbs

Got my eye on this one

Default WARNING: this is not directly about the BME 50

Ok guys, let's start a little legitimate controversy. Thrust? What exactly does 27lbs mean? How was it measured? With a thrust calculator, or does the BME have a thrust measurement system they use. If so, then this figure has value only when comparing it to other values BME publishes for their engines, but not for comparative purposes with other engines. RCS/ZDZ quotes thrust and they admit they're using a thrust calculator for the numbers they publish. If taken as an absolute to compared against another engine, this again is pretty meaningless.

The only measurement that can be useful for comparing different motors on these forums is RPM numbers for the same prop(brand, type and size) on different motors, and hopefully some conditions will be known, like altitude, temperature and humidity to help judge the relative value of these numbers.

Default How to measure thrust?

Chris,

One of the best ways that is easy is just attach a digital fish scale to the back of your plane and have at it(make sure no one is standing in front of it). With this method you'll get a fairly close "real" thrust reading. You'll most likely find it is significantly less than what the thrust calculator tells you what it is going to be.

If you want "accurate" thrust measurements then you probably need a test stand mounted on ball bearings and hooked to a very accurate measuring device, though I don't think this is necessary for good comparisons.

The only point I'm trying to make is that a thrust number by itself doesn't mean a lot for comparitive purposes, unless all thrust numbers you're comparing were derived from the same method.

As an example, from the RPM numbers my Taurus 2.6 is turning on a 22X8 Zinger Pro(7200), the thrust calculator tells me I have over 34lbs of static thrust. There's no way this is a "true" thrust value.

Bill,

Wouldn't it be good if there could be a basic test the average person could do like you are describing, and then have that info in a website databasefor all the different engines. Now that would be helpful.

I agree with you 100%, I only use the thrust as a general idea on the engine.

BTW.. Still considering taking your suggestion on the BME
