Hey Karol hope you're reading this.I hear you have the rcexl ignition for your G20.Are you using the original hall sensor or are you using the one that was supplied by rcexl. Did you use the same mounting hole?
Any special things you need to do? And did you see any rpm increase?
Thanks

Back home now but with a broken collar bone, no flying for a month.

I now have several hours on the the G20ei and have had no ignition problems, has Zenoah made a change to the ignition system? I am starting into my 5th gallon, anyone that runs a G20ei knows how much time that is.

Still the same ignition system.Mine started giving problems when I nosed over too many times and damaged the socket somewhat. It eventually led to erratic operation. Karol and TKG got back to me about the RCexl which is literally plug and play.
5 gallons- man thats a lot of flying! Roughly one litre an hour so you've done almost 20hrs flying!! I am stil very happy with this little engine.I'm fitting a tuned pipe to my next project.
What plane do you have yours on?

The stock Zenoah ignition system seems to be fairly reliable just a bit on the power hungry side when compared to the other popular brands.

I have the G20ei in in a Hangar9 120 ultra stick, I have a Yak coming and will want to do the exhaust upgrade ala tuned pipe. I am looking for info on the exhaust upgrade(tuned pipe).

Go to the Toni Clark website. They have a tuned muffler and a tuned pipe for the G20. The header costs about 45euros , the tuned muffler about 80euros and the pipe for 90euros.Looks very well made but a bit pricey especially with shipping thrown in. I'm using a modified Hatori header and a ESM carbon pipe from another engine. Hope it works .

You can check the Toni Clarke and Mac mufflers web sites for information on tuned pipes. TKG that post here has a pipe setup on his G20, so you could send him a PM for details, or he might just pop in here as he has been following this thread.

By the way which of the Yaks are you getting for the G20. I had planned on getting a 72" span Aero Works .90-1.20 for mine, but figured the power might be a bit marginal so I am opting to use a new 26cc unit from Ralph. Will comment on the engine as soon as it arrives and I give it a run.

Iam going with Seagull Yak 64"x850 sq in., I have an Aero Works Yak and gave up trying to keep the gear under it. It flys well with an OS 120-2stroke but our rough field would not let the gear stay in, unless you are flying from a carpet make sure you reinforce the gear, my belief is the plywood that the gear mounts is not wide enough and the gear will rip the ply out.

The pipe is Toni Clarks set up. I had to redo the angles to make it fit better. I gained about 600-800 rpm depending on the prop.
I settled on an APC 17x6 turning in the 9200 rpm range.
I removed the motor mount plate and mounted the engine directly to the firewall. Why add weight if you don't need it.

Sweet![8D] How's the midrange? Maybe I should put it this way, how smooth is the powerband? Is there a noticable hit when it comes on the pipe?

I am running a 16x4W on my G20 mounted on a
funtana 90. Gives sparkling performance. Will hover at half throttle, pull out vertical, etc. I too have had an ignition module go bad, replaced free by Horizon Hobby. Here's something I did to give my engine a little more oomph - I advanced the timing slightly by turning the sensor similar to turning a distributor on an auto engine. You do this by elongating the mounting holes in the sensor. It's very quick and easy to do, and I'm sure others have already done this. I was able to feel the power increase immediately! What a great little engine. I just wish I had bought mine AFTER the price was reduced.

What rpm are you getting with the 16x4W?

Hey this sounds interesting. I know we go by degrees but in this case what is the distance that the sensor was moved? 1/16in? or greater? Was starting still easy and what rpm increase did you get?
I'm running a 16x6apc getting 9180rpm.

Wideglide, was the 9800 rpm before or after the sensor adjustment to advance the timing?

In response to all who are interested in my timing advance on my G20, the rpm gains I am seeing are of course after I had bumped it up slightly. (the timing) I have actually seen rpm readings of over 10,000 on my tach, which is a Hangar 9 model. Here's how to see it work for yourselves - this is the same way I discovered it. With the cowling off, (you have to be able to get to the sensor) loosen the mounting screws to the sensor. Now, start the engine, and with the enging running at idle speed, remove the screws to the sensor. You can do this easily by hand because they are already loose. When the screws are out, (you are holding the sensor by hand, of course) turn the sensor as far as you can to the left and you will hear a noticeable increase in rpm. Now turn it as far as you can to the right and the rpm will drop off to the point of almost stopping the engine. The sensor will only turn so far in either direction so you are limited as to how much you can actually advance the timing, which is probably a good thing. As you are looking down at the mounting holes, you can see how to elongate them in order to be able to mount your sensor in the advanced position. I did this easily with my cordless drill. Yes, the engine starts very easily, my idle has improved, and as I said before, it really hauls my Funtana 90 with authority now. I really did see a difference in performance. I set my flight timer for 15 minutes, and when I land I have used only about 2/3 of my 8 ounces of gas. These engines are gas misers already, but advancing the timing has even reduced fuel consumption slightly! I'll be watching to see if any one else does this and sees the results I have. Happy flying!

That's really good information for anyone running on the stock Zenoah ignition. What type of exhaust / muffler arrangement were you using and with what size prop that gave that 10k+ reading.

Everything is stock on the exhaust - I haven't done anything there yet. I am running a 16x4W APC prop. Of course I burn 93 octane gas, especially with the timing advanced. Please understand that this mod is not like putting a G26 engine on your plane, but it does give you a little extra kick without paying a weight penalty. A Funtana 90 is probably right at the limit weight wise for a G20 in stock configuration. Before I changed the timing, pulling vertical out of a hover was marginal at best. The very first flight after advancing the timing I saw a marked improvement that put a smile on my face. Everyone has their own preference as far as props go, but as for me, I am a firm beleiver in the flatter pitch wide blade props. In WWII, the P-47 Thunderbolt was transformed into a viable fighter when the paddle-bladed props were fitted.

Those numbers are nothing short of fantastic running on a stock exhaust, as my engine gives nowhere near that rpm running on a CH RCexcl ignition (which is better than stock) and Brillelli muffler turning a Xoar 15x8 prop. Could be the 93 octane gas causing it but I don't think so.

With some mods, this engine seems to be worth it, but I'm a little worried aboout the engine's weight. How would the 20ei fly a Hangar-9 Showtime 90?

Originally, I was planning to use an Evolution 26, but that thing is too freakin' expensive.

Guys I have a KMP Stuka and I would like to put a G20 on it. Do you guys think it is feesable? The cowl is narrow and I think the G20 would be a good one. I do have G23 that is an RCIgntions conversion as well but I would like to put that one on my GP RV-4.
