Lightweight engine for 90inch 30% Carden?
I have a 90inch wingspan Carden Extra 300 that I am rebuilding. I fly at 4500 feet above sea level. Like most, I want to put as much hp as I can in the nose for as little weight as possible. It had an older 3W75 installed and this was too heavy imo. Thinking DA85? Or a lightwt 100? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

ZDZ80?
3W 80XI?
Stihl 75cc? 4lbs 14oz RTF w/muffler, ignition and 1500mah 6V MH battery.
(no, you can't have it!)
It's on my 30% World Models Extra 300L.

Cardens are heavy. I'm not surprised that he is looking to lighten it up. I have a 30% Cap 232 that is sitting at a friends house awaiting a covering job. It's heavy. I did everything I could to lighten it, but it's still gonna be 22-23lbs RTF.
BUT, they last forever if you don't crash. One nice thing about a solid airframe like that--you can fly them for thousands of flights and they don't get ratty and fall apart. More than I can say for every ARF I've ever owned.
If you lighten the nose, are you also going to lighten the tail? If not--you'll just end up tail heavy and have to add lead to balance it out. How much can you REALLY save in engine weight? Whats your 3W75 weigh?

To stay on thread ..... my vote would be for the DA-85 in the Carden.

Is that RCIGN's work on that Stihl? Sure looks like his sensor setup. Have you run it yet and if so what sort of performance are you getting. I've always wondered about a Stihl conversion. They sure run well in the saw.

The ZDZ Super 80 running a composite pipe...has been a serious contender with 100cc twins, considering the weight savings and power it produces. I know it is lighter than the 3w85, though I cannot put my fingers on the weight of the DA85 at the moment. I would be surprised if you could make the same power at the same weight with another option. That's not saying other options would be less desireable...but you know what i mean

ZDZ 80 is going to save you roughly a pound over that 3W75 you had in it and have more power.
My buddy had one in a 22 pound Extra last summer and it had all the power you could ever need and then some. If it's going to come closer to 24+ pounds I would then look at the DA 85.
At around 22 pounds the DA is overkill in my mind.. I had a 3W-85 in my 24 pouind Extra last year and it had tons of power.. the DA 85 has the power edge there and is flying 26 pound planes just fine.
The one thing maybe worth considering is the DA 85 will give you a bit more options down the road... but I really cant see why you wouldnt be happy with a ZDZ 80 either.

RE: Lightweight engine for 90inch 30% Carden?
Thanks for all the responses. I didn't even know Stihl made a 75cc engine! The AUW was 22.5lbs dry with the 3W75. During the rebuild I have probably taken off about a pound. (mostly by using carbon fiber tube, landing gear, etc.). Most of the wt lost was right around the wing tube (CG) area anyway. I plan to measure the CG with no engine on there and then hang wts out front to see how much engine wt will balance it. It flew way nose heavy with the 5.5lb 3W (75us with pitts smoke muffler). So I am guessing about 4-4.5lbs in engine wt would be close. With losing a pound off the frame, and another off the engine wt that would put me in at about 20.5 pounds which ought to be good. Sounds like the ZDZ80, DA85, or a Stihl (if you can find one).

I think my engine came from a Magnum 460 chainsaw.

I haven't weighed my plane. I thought it was about 22 pounds. Two other guys say 19-20 pounds. Either way -- it's gonna be SICK!!
