RE: ZDZ 40 or Evolution 40GX!
i am in the same boat ( or plane) I'm looking at the aeroworks 35 cc and trying to decide between those engines or a large 200 4 stroke. the glow engine would be lighter and sound great although quite expensive... I do have a DA 50 but to me its crazy to put that much engine in a plane this size. I know others are doing it though.
I have experience with zdz 80 but not 40. and that thing is a bear, it's got so much compression!!! sometimes a hard one to start but once running a powerhouse. no experience with evolution.
talk to me

RE: ZDZ 40 or Evolution 40GX!
pliebo I guess Ive finaly decided to throw in a DA - 50 into my kit.I was worried about the power to weight ratio and was also concerned if its too big an engine for a 35cc but ppl are suggesting that it would be just fine.actually a 50 cc is a mid range size and i can easily throw that engine into a slightly bigger frame later on.BUT to be honest im still a little confused wether i shud still throw in a 50 cc engine into the 35 to 45 cc aeroworks kit.

Well, the DA 50 (actually ANY 50cc) will weigh about a pound more than the 40cc engines. Keep that in mind, as 1 pound is HUGE in this size range, about an 8% increase in weight.
This could be the differrence between a plane that flies like a nicely-powered eagle or like an overpowered rock.
If you don't have the kit yet, you might just consider getting a 50cc engine and a plane designed for a 50cc engine. Price will be about the same!

RE: ZDZ 40 or Evolution 40GX!
Also I have experience with several ZDZ 40's and 80's. They are great to run, have only deadsticked on me when I ran out of fuel, and are easy to start PROVIDED the choke plate is closed TIGHTLY, and the engine isn't flooded. The 5-5-1 procedure works very well.
I also have experience with the DA 50 and a pair of DA100's. They are great, and are very user-friendly. In many ways they are the highest-quality engine on the market.
No experience with the Evolution engines, but a few friends have them and like them. They seem to work best on a pipe.
**edit** also my ZDZ's worked OK on a pitts muffler, but really love a pipe (or at least a free-flowing exhaust). The DA's work well on pitts mufflers.

RE: ZDZ 40 or Evolution 40GX!
You are welcome, and that means the ZDZ 40 weighs a pound less than the other two. I didn't realize the Evolution 40gx was that heavy. At any rate all three are very good engines.
By the way I saw this plane at a hobby expo last weekend and it is very nice, top quality all around.

The ZDZ 40 IS NOT a pound lighter than a DA-50. The ZDZ-40 is 2.86 pounds and the DA-50 is 2.94 pounds. You should get the facts straight before posting.

You may also try to do the same - The ZDZ40 F3a is 2.5 lbs
also the ZDZon a cf pipe give far more performance than the DA50 -unless the 50 is on a properly setup pipe
We have run this stuf on bench tests and in air
I ain't just gussin.
On good aerobat - weight is everything
We did the H9 Extra with ZDZ40 RE n can.and it wa a better performer than the DA50 setups
simply because of same power but lighter weight.

Do the same? The numbers I posted are correct. The 2.86 pound number is for the ZDZ-40RE. You show me a ZDZ-40 of any type that is a pound lighter than a DA-50.
There is hardly a difference between the ZDZ-40RE and DA-50 in terms of weight. I have had both on the same plane and I did not have to add any weight to balance the plane when switching engines.

RE: ZDZ 40 or Evolution 40GX!
now add in the weight of the plug, prop hardware, mounting standoffs to the DA and compare it again. Not counting muffler there is an 8-12 oz difference between the engines depending on the standoffs used on the DA.
I know, I have both and have weighed both on my scale, one after another. Maybe the newer engines are lighter? Mine is 5 years old.
Of course add in a muffler and all bets are off, some mufflers are very light and others are quite heavy. Both my ZDZ 40 and DA 50 had wraparound Pitts mufflers so I was weighing the complete package.
For what it is worth I had to shift the battery aft 6" to balance my plane when I switched from a BME 50 to the DA 50, although the engines are within a couple of ounces of each other (I think the BME was 2-3 ounces heavier). The center of mass of the DA is located further ahead of the firewall than the BME was.
This whole side discussion is irrelevant anyhow as the original poster has purchased a DA 50.
