which oil for dl50?
buying a DL50 with about 2 gallons thru it. Present owner is using lawn boy ashless. Just wondering if this is the best to use and what ratio should I be using until fully broken in. Thanks

Use Pennzoil 2-stroke air cooled at 32-1, after 4-5 gallons either stick with the Pennzoil at 40-1 or switch to a good synthetic that mixes at 40-1 or 50-1 such as Belray. There are dozens of good synthetics out there and anyone will work good.

RE: which oil for dl50?
Hi FlyerDave,
There are as many ideas about this as there are pilots. If the compression is about where you think it should be I would think that switching to Pennzoil for air cooled engines running about 40:1 would work just fine. I know some of the guys at our flying field are now switching over to this after engine failures in one or two years time with various engines. I'm now running this in my Brillelli, DA, FPE and G62 and they seem to get along well with it. I might move up to 50:1 (maybe). Even if it might carbon the engine if run to rich it's still cheaper then buying new parts or sending your engine in. You can decarbon your engine ar home. Now I guess it's time for me to be shot down. Bill

RE: which oil for dl50?
Oil discussions tend to get pretty heated due to Brand loyalty with some flyers. I also heard bad things about Lawn Boy stuff, never used it myself. I own about a dozen gassers, only in 50cc or 100cc class. I personally use Amsoil Saber Professional and run 50:1 instead of 100:1 because all my engines have less than 4 gallons through them. I just have lots of airplanes and don't fly one plane enough to break them in fully. The key here is to go with the oil ratio recommended on the bottle, and this will vary depending on the brand of oil. I ignore the ratio recommended by the manufacturer if they don't mention the brand to go with that ratio being mentioned, because different brands will have different ratios being recommended. Only exception I've found is Redline 2c racing oil. Here, the recommendation is to go with "different ratio depending on the engine requirements". This sounds too hoky to me for Redline to say that. They assume people that use Redline already know what their "engine requirements". That's my 2 cents on oil topic.

The Lawnboy gernerates fast ring and cylinder wear along with heavy sludge buildup so it would not be used at all on my engines. The Redline can be used up to 100-1 per the manufacturer if you had the desire to use that thin a mix. 100-1 anything is hard on engines. I've been using the Redline at 50-1 for the past 8 years and the engines look and run good.
Bel Ray MC1 and H1R, Stihl HP Ultra, Pennzoil Air Cooled, Echo, Motul 800, and several others are great products at ratios from 32 up to 50-1. Pick one you can find locally and enjoy.
