Think about the full scale Corby Starlet. She wasn't exactly a powerhouse.
A model of almost 40% of original could draw a bit from the full scale in terms of performance.

Manyfacturer recommends a 38cc max (this is the G38, by the way), personally, I think it would be grossly overpowered with a 50cc

I agree with apalsson. DA50 is way to big.

Thats what you have a left thumb for. Always better to have more than enough and not need it than to have not enough and need it! And being that the G38 is about the same weight as the DA why not.

The quoted 180FS would be very marginal with no safety for powering out of a mistake. It's BIG at 85"! I have two 180FS by the way and they are great in my 65" and 70" aerobatic planes.

I think they quoted this motor as it's still a 'model' engine and the plane isn't advertised as an aerobatic / expert / gasser combo. Keeping it listed as a glow might encourage fliers moving up from a 60 or something to fly something bigger. No 'unknowns' like walbro carbs and mixing petroil; you can retain your familiar fuel, glow clip and procedures.

A modern lightweight 50cc like the DA would be perfect for it [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

I was going to put my OS FF320 in it, but it's way too small inside that huge cowl. I've decided to put my Moki 180 in there instead, radial mount w/Brisson Pitts muffler. Hope that combo will work OK. Any thoughts?[8D] BTW, I've never run the Moki, its NIB, but just read it takes FAI fuel (no nitro, castor lube). That's pretty cheap fuel IMHO.

MOKI 180 is an excellent engine. Great idle, low nitro fuel and lots of power (more than the 180FS). Should be fine - not unlimited vertical or knife edge climbing, but reasonable I would expect.

Hi There,

Just thought I would shed some light on the Corby for you re - power selection.
The ideal engine would be a four stroke FT300 from OS. This engine has the desired extra weight and would also fly at very good scale speed and sound as well.... failing that the gas engines around 30 - 40 cc would go as well. Mine flew very well on the FS180 and I could most things I wanted, but to have a bit extra power would help if you are looking for just a bit more punch. I designed the model way back in 2003 for Hobby People and it has been very successfull down under here.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask, I will do my best to answer.
Regards

CHRIS WHITE

Hey Chris,

The Corby is a fantastic little plane!
I had two of the smaller ones (on a FS70) and flew litterallly 100ds of flights. It was my all time favourite small glow plane.
The big version is still sitting a box in my warehouse waiting to be built. I'm bolting in the new Aussie made YD-A 38cc into it.

I tried to e-mail you earlier for some scale parts but you may never have received my e-mail.
I might PM you here as well

Best regards

Ari

Hi Ari,

I am happy you liked the baby Corby as so many people here in Australia also had the same fun as you did, the larger Corby ARF has also been popular as well and that makes the whole project worth while.

The email address you may have tried was not in service any longer and has been like that for maybe 3-4 month,so not sure if that was the reason.
The 38cc engine will be a nice choice for the Big Corby as thiswill help the balance, its better to have more weight in the nose so don't be affaid about leaving the servos as shown in the intructions. You will find the big Corby a bit better on the ground handling then the little, its really is so easy to fly.

REGARDS

Thanks Chris,

I realise this is all a matter of opinion but the Corby is in my view one of the best flying planes you can get in this size class (30 - 40cc).
I saw one at the recent Southern Cross Model Aero Rally and she was just fantastic.

The Corby also makes nice change from all the Extras, YAKs and Edges out there and is quite aerobatic if set up right.

Mine will go together as soon as I get my hands on the engine

Hi Ari,

Good luck with the model and as mentioned if you just keep to the intructions for evrthing you will enjoy the model as much as I did.
The engine size should be a great combination to allow to do some nice areo's.

Hey Ari
long time no talk...
As you may know by now, I decided to give a halt to the Decathlons business - built-up ones, that is, now I do kits only at evenings, since I got back to corporate life again.
And I also want some time to dedicate to my long to-do list, actually next in line was a 1/2 scale Spacewalker... Googling around I stumbled over the CJ-1 and Chris White´s gorgeous model. I immediately wrote him about plans, since I want to build mine a bit bigger, in the 50cc range, that should allow for some 1/2 scale measurements if building light.

What is the progress of yours? Did you already start? Keep me posted. I´m definitely hooked to this model.

Hope Chris gets back to me with some additional information...

I already got a copy of the full-size plans, but would love to get some scale model plans - although there is almost no difference, the Full Size Corby looks like a giant scale model.

Well, let´s keep in touch

Marcus
