I found a tach on the YD engine distributor's site: [link=http://www.rcaer.com/store/Details.cfm?ProdID=238&category=10]Mini tach[/link]

Do you want to go? We have space for one more person in the Expedition and trailer for one more plane!

Finally got three gallons of fuel through the engine, seems to be broken in very well. Got almost 14 hours of flying time on the GS Sportster now at a really cheap fuel cost. I would have used almost 7 gallons of glow fuel for that much flying.
I just made the switch from the Zinger 18x6 to the Vess 18x6 prop. The RPM increase from idle (at 17xx) to max at (87xx or 88xx) is so fast it is hard to measure. I don't have a good way to measure thrust on the ground, it was awesome with both the Zinger and Vess props, anyway I like to see what the plane does in the air.
Can't wait for the winds to die down below 30-40 mph so I can see what the difference is on the vertical line.
BTW - added some pics to the gallery.

P.S. If you need some wind at J.N. this week we have some to spare.

Moving the LG from the wing to the fuselage makes it possible to use my portable starter stand for engine runs.
The stand makes tuning the carb a lot easier.
I do need to put the bungee cord over the tail of the plane to keep it from nosing over and I need to hold the stand from rolling by using a tie-down strap.
More pics are in my gallery.

Love the stand, does it come in four wheel drive?

Wish I had steering and brakes hooked up on it, when it was on the concrete driveway the engine would pull it at idle. I moved it to tall grass and the engine would pull it at WOT with no problem. Have to tie it down to be "safe." My wife was holding the stand for me (for a while, you know what I mean?) and she said "If the wing was on the plane it may be able to fly with the stand."
I may need to make the uprights heavier, the SAP has a lot of thrust and I was worried about the stand holding together.

Finally got to the field with the engine in a plane. It would not start. All was well on the bench and I had better than a half a gallon through it. Had fuel with a wet plug and had spark but motor would not run. Fooled around for a while till my good friend Dave went home and got his motor. We swapped out plugs. No good. Pulled needles and checked diphram and still no fire. Swapped out ignitions and VOILA. Motor ran. Anyone else have this problem?

I only had troubles with the sheared hub key not the ignition module. What ignition battery voltage have you been using? 4.5 volts is recommended to prevent smoking the module.
Did you try to run your friends engine (or any other) on your suspected bad ignition? Something I'd consider to rule out connection/installation oversight. I've heard of the pins in the J connectors being pushed back...
I recently ordered the mini tach, protractor and ignition tester kit for any future troubleshooting.
....and nice stand Joystick! Saving the back is worth it!

Did you take any pictures of Todd flying his Extreme 78" Flight Extra? He stopped by my house with the plane just before leaving for South Carolina, very sweet.

RC11,
My plane is set up just like yours except I use two LIIons to feed the MPI.
I made two flights Sunday, no problem. Tried to start it for a third flight and it wouldn't. It popped and blew smoke rings out the exhaust and would on occasion run for maybe two seconds. Tried priming and decided to save it for another day. Todd had checked my ignition a week ago and said it was good to 22,000 RPM so maybe my trouble was me. My MPI puts out 5.95 v to the receiver. Is yours set for the same? I think Todd's IBEC knocks the voltage down a bit more to the ignition.

Same set up. Same problem. Occasional pop and some smoke but motor would not run. Got spark and fuel. Even used a starter. Changed out ignition with my friend Dave and flew. Motor fired up 1st flip.
Talked to Todd who is at the Noll and he said send the ignition box back and he would replace it. Good customer service! Just now back from the post office so we'll see how long it takes for the return.
If you have another box, give it a try. Fortunate that Dave has the same motor.

He didn't fly it before I left yesterday. I switched mine over from the breakin oil and tuned the needles and my extra felt perfect with the "new" prop on it. So much so that I dipped the rudder in the lake. (with a bad throttle servo!)
