After the crash, was the engine with no muffler on the leftwing of the airplane?

Engine was still cowled. Throttle still hooked up. Most of the left pylon went thru the trees unscathed. Can't say much for the rest of the airplane. I'm opening a tooth pick outlet at the mall!

For the engine that was still cowled, with thethrottle still hooked up, where most of the left pylon went thru the trees, did you find the muffler for that engine?

I'm still not clear on your answer to the question I'm asking. One more try.

Was the engine in this picture on the left wing or the right wing?

If the muffler screws, on the left side engine, came loose would the muffler be able to fall out of the cowl before the crash?

There was enough room to fall out.

That is interesting. The muffler comming off of the engine would explain why your engine quit during the flight and also why you can't find the muffler near the crash site.

My muffler used to get loose after three or four 15 min flights and once one of the bolts that held it on came completely out.

Though the screws are still firmly imbedded in the metal on that picture...

It looks like the muffler mounting area underwent a stress fracture... as if something hit it or the muffler was pulled back hard at some point... e.g. a prior crash.

A fracture due to an imperfection in the metal normally results in a smooth cracked area, unlike the sand paper like areas in the photo, or visible large cooling bubbles imbedded in the metal.

This is the E-mail I got today from Fred At Syssa Aircraft. [Yes. We have engines in stock. Can send out in about 1 day.

What kind of plane do you need it for?
Approximate weight, wingspan and kind of airplane: Extra, trainer, warbird, etc.

We can recommend a prop type and size for your airplane.]

Thanks and take care,
Fred

Make him wait about 11 months . Thats the way he treats his customers , see if he likes it . I think Mecoa are taking a leaf out of his bussiness model as well . I have no time for companies that bugger you around when your trying to give them $ .Imagine how its gonna go when you need them for warrenty etc. Cheers the pope

I my opinion, demand grew faster than supply and Todd was overwelmd by it and not sure what to do. Some folks just shut down when this happens and some work through it. I think when ones works through it they are more prepared the next time. Come on, Its American made and American company. With times like they are now we need more of the little guys. If they truley have them in stock, I would by right now.

I was ready to pull the trigger on one of these engines when they came out.
I didn't then and haven't looked back yet. Not worth all of the problems brought up in these forums over the years.
The way I look at it, Todd has had more than enough time to work out his problems, but has failed as a business man.
I don't mind buying products made in the USA, but am not going to put up with poor service and parts replacement in addition to no internet or phone support for his products.

I'm still waiting on a VESS prop for my engine. Don't know why that is taking so long.

Wow, wish I had that many.

Did you set your spark plug gap to .025 like someone on here recommended? They said it made the low end carb adjusment lesssensitive.

Ijustset the gapon my enginetoday, but I didn't get a chance to try it out. It was set to .018 before. Hope it works.

I've made that suggestion before (setting the plug to .025), but usually it would be in reference to mid range burbling? Sounds like a bunch of BS, but it's pretty effective! That said, cleaning up the idle with that move might be a bonus? Opening the gap up is about helping the plug to run cleaner in a rich environment - which pretty well describes how most of my gassers are set on the idle at least!

Iridium plugs, well that's their specialty - cleaning up a rich idle. That's about all they're good for, so many don't like spending the money on them just to help handle that.

For what it's worth, I've been experimenting with different props. The 18x6 Vess and Xoar work really well. An 18x10 wood prop like the top-flite or Menz is too much and will cause the engine to over heat especially in a cowled application. Plus the static thrust goes down along with the rpm. BUT, I have the Biella 18x10 carbon prop on an RC Guys Cessna 150 and it is perfect. I fly that thing like a sport plane, throwing it all over the sky, great big loops, slow rolls, stall turns and snaps. It slows down so much on landing that I have to use 1/4 throttle until I'm just about on the ground. Chief Aircraft sells them for about $38. A little pricey, but at least for this particular airframe is well worth it.
