Default DLE 55 or MT 57

Hey guys,

I'm going to be building a 50cc bird here shortly. Wondering your opinions on both these engines. Will go in ~14-15lb 87" plane, and I fly at 3500ft ASL. Looking for overall engine quality, superior running performance, HP, tuning, longevity, reliable ignition, etc. Which engine would you buy, the new DLE 55 or the MT 57?

the type of the sparking plug :NGK CM6

2、Parameter

The DLE55 is very user friendly and easy to install and set up. It is also the smoother running of the two. The 57 has a hair more power, but also has a more vibration. The 57's carb arms are not as user friendly for attaching pushrods and takes a little more work. It also has more torque for swinging a larger prop due to its long stroke design. If you are new to gasseres I would recommend the DLE.

If you chose the MT57 be sure you get the new version with the updated crankcase. The early ones had a few problems which look to be all worked out now.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was leaning towards the DLE 55 also, however I can get a used MT-57 locally for $300. He said he had issues with its transition from low to high and had replaced seals and ring. 6400rpm on a 23x8 XOAR.

Anyone else have an opinion or experience on these 2 engines?

DLE-55. I have one and love it. Light, powerful, reliable, easy to start.

I have the MT-57 and it has run perfectly. It is probably the strongest engine that I own in the 50 cc category. I also have a DL-50 and am happy with it...I don't think that you can go wrong with either...forced to choose I would take the MT-57.

Ditto what joe posted. I have a DLE 55 on a 18lb Yak and absolutely LOVE it! Tons of vertical pull (Xoar 22x8), starts cold on about 5 flips, and have only needed to slightly touch the needles 1 time since I bolted it on. This is my 1st new gas engine and I would buy another one in a heart beat...

Good luck with your decision.

Why would you consider buying a used engine that has known problems??????

I have mine timed at 30. I just got back from flying my Python which has the MT57 in it. It is running like a swiss watch as the saying goes. Switched to a 22x10 Xoar carbon fiber prop for the last two flights and my god does it pull hard. My suggestion to go with the DL50/55 is for a person that is new to gas engines. The DL is a little more user friendly in my opinion, and not because I don't like my MT57, which I do. As for performance f find the MT pulls just a few rpm more than a DL on the same day with the same prop. I own both and like them both. As for the DL55 I haven't used one yet, some say they have no more power than the 50 and some say they do.

Mine had vibration at the start but not anymore. The transition is good, no burbles and very fast. I think most of the problems were with the first run of engines early last year when it first hit the market.

MT 57 engine here as well, mine is running very well. All the DL engines I have been around run well but definitely less power. I have one of the original engines timed at 27 degrees on my Extreme Flight Yak, I enjoy it!

Hey there everyone,,happy new years in advance,,,in response to the topic question,,i feel the dl may be a little more rugged in appearance and in service, but the mt has the thumbs up on the preference, for power and when properly tuned runs like the 600.00 50cc that others rave over, regardless of the issues from a certain dealer who didnt fully repair my motor,i ,can only assume that quality control is being implemented now that it appears the engine line is expanding, the omly thing i could reccomend as a non expert in all the technical aspects of everything supporting a particular engine,,is quality control, such as out of center cranks or leaky case, seals ,,i would, hope they  tommy would test run ,instead of sending an untested motor.and lastly the spreader plates that are found at paragon and other vendors,,should come standard,,,im certain others have had perfect service from their mt57,,and regardless of my personal issues ive had i still like the motor and i also realize the first version and the timing defects have been addressed along with the case crack problems have been addressed, and what ill most likely have to do is see if i can get lspro or another vendor to honor any warranty issues, because theres no way ill ever deal with ,,the previous guy who patted himself on the back for a shabby repair job.so thats my story .bottom line mt 57 is a great motor when all is per specs.and in many ways despite the price difference is a better than a da

I had a MT57 actually had two of them, one was a replacement engine from Tommy. He gave me a new one to replace the first one that had a crack case.
One strong engine never dead stick, great transition,no burble when the needles are set rite, doesn't die or want to stop when inverted,BUT the thing would shake like a dog *****en bones.Loosen up two air frames that i had it on.
7250 on a Vess23-a,i would buy the DL55,but i would never buy another china made engine.

Um...........did you just say that if it weren't for the out of center cranks, leaky case seals, the need for third party modifications, case cracks, timing defects, and poor service, they were just as good as a DA50?

OK. Just wanted to make sure.

7250 on a Vess23x6 ?Not bad nr s at all.Well, my veryfirst DL50 engine after cca.450 take offs is turning a 23x8 METTS wood prop cca. 7000-7050 rpms.
My 3 DLE 55 s are still in the break in period, these are turning usually in the 7500-7600 rpm range with a 22x8 wood prop, without excess shaking and transition problems

I should have made myself more clear.I was telling Eganwp that the dl55 is a much better engine and thats the one i would buy.
But that will never happen again because IMO i think ALL china made engines are ment to be disposable engines. If a guy had tools to make the cylinders round and not almost round like they come out of china and replace the bearings with better made ones, that will last for more than two seasons, they might be worth the 350.00.But why would you rebuild a engine that the cylinder is out of round to begin with.
One thing i did notice is that the MT57 had twice the compression of any DL50 that i flip over at the field, but that doesn't make it better.

Yep,sounds like Jim already knows where it's at already. Not a bad place to fly, runway goes east-west,and it's about 3/4 of a mile long paved strip. The only bad thing is that you half to face south to fly, always looking into sun and house's are north of you so can't fly there.
Just payed dues to Willard club so i will still fly there, but they will half to get someone else to mow the field this year i did it for the last three years.
