Default 3w50i, prop for warbirds?

I have a 3w50i and want to know what is the best wood propeller to use on a warbird? Not really interested in doing torque rolls but would like get the best speed out of it.

Thanks!

we are using black 22x8 propeller in a P-47 and it really makes this bird nice!! but also a 22x10 can do great. I like black Xoar edition.

Check out our new scale Warbird props in black with yellow wood prop at: www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/TBMPR2210B.html for $25.00.

Thank you for the info, I am getting a xoar 21-12 for speed, those prepainted warbird props are nice, I never seem to get mine painted before I nose over... LOL

Those Xoar Swords (painted) flex, you'd be surprised at the difference if you used a Xoar laminated instead. I would personally avoid going over a 10 pitch, unless your warbird has flaps, and you know how to use them.

Hi,

I would recommend a 22 x 10 for that engine for warbirds. I use 22 x 8 for 45 lb research planes and even though the plane is very draggy with samplers, the airspeed is 60 mph. A 12 pitch prop would give you speed but the takeoff roll may leave a lot to be desired.

I completely agree with arobatx regarding going over 10 pitch for this application..... and for the average flyer. Higher pitches make landing a real adventure as even at relatively low idle speeds, that higher pitch continues to pull the plane at a speed where it can maintain flight. This creates a condition where you either need effective flaps to slow you down or as I have done in the past, you can kill the engine on final approach when a safe landing is guaranteed.

High pitch props can be lots of fun on warbirds but you have to be prepared to deal with their shortcomings. They're also very ineffective on take off .... they just don't accelerate the airframe like a lower pitch prop. If you come off the ground too soon, be prepared for a possible stall as the prop won't be saving you. Lower pitch props climb better, higher pitch props go faster.

As always, prop selection is a compromise. The standard 22-8 or 22-10 prop on any 50 warbird will give you more than scale airspeed, the engine will be happy and so will the airframe. If you have an engine like a Zenoah that likes to turn up, go to a 20-10 or 21-10 and watch the airspeed increase accordingly .... plus the engines sound cool turning up over 8000.

When you're ready, change to that short diameter, high pitch prop and have a ball with it. But .... and this is a big but, if you have to ask a forum what prop to use on your engine, you're not ready for that step quite yet!!

I did run this motor on a 83" Taylor Spit flew great more than enough power, I also did with a FW190D9 Holman 80" and it was fine on that, however I am putting on a 89" P51 and afraid it might only be just scale speed. A 3w55 would be nice, but hate to buy another engine, I will try and prop for it. Thanks for all the help guys!

USRA AT6 pilots have tried every prop on the planet to get the best speed for the STOCK G62 powered planes...Started with 22-10 Zingers, about 90 mph...
Current prop is an APC made for the USRA...STOCK G62s turn 9000 in the air with this prop, speed is 120+ mph...There is no problem with takeoff...
The T6s are 100 inch wingspan, 25+ lb models...There are no mufflers, just a straight pipe from Mac's products...
