piper pawnee gasser?

A .60 size Supertiger Glow converted to gas may work. Oil mix would need to be about 20-1. You may also need to beef up the Pawnee a bit here & there. Should work ok...may be wrong! Capt,n

Do you guys think that the new DLE 20CC gas engine would be toooooooo much for the Pawnee 40? I'd like to put a gasser on it but am curious about a 20CC. [8D]

This plane is most commonly powered by an 80 four stroke. The DLE20 is a 20cc two stroke (1.20CuIn)
In the old method, we used to put a 1.50 - 1.80 four stroke where it was called for a 1.20 two stroke.
The Pawnee is a nice scale plane. Kind of a low wing Cub. The original wasn't exactly a powerhouse.

I seen that same airplane for sale at a swap meet for $200. He did not sell it. I asked him was you the guy that had a Pawnee here last year. He said yes it is the same one. Nice looking, but looks like a very fragile airplane. Capt,n P.S. go electric on that one!

I thought the DLE 20 would probably be a little tooooo much and thanks for your "on Point" analysis. Do you think that it would perform better with a 15CC or a 17CC gasser? If so, what is a good brand for the engine that you might recommend? I really want to fly this Pawnee with a gasser if possible or otherwise I need to put my OS 91 4 stroke on it or purchase a Saito 82. Thanks for your input and I don't mean to put anyone on the spot as I realize that it is only an opinion, but your opinion will be better than my knowledge of gassers at this time.

At most put a Saito .65 on it. Beef it up a tad wher engine mounts & any other weak looking areas. Fly it easy...like scale...forget gas on it for now. Capt,n

My Pawnee has a Saito 80 four stroke which is ample power. They tend to be a bit tail heavy so a smaller 4 stroke would probably mean you would be flying around with a bit of lead onboard.
I'm not a big believer in gassers smaller than 26cc (maybe 20cc) because of the power to weight ratio.
The Pawnee airfame may look fragile but they are surprisingly strong. The only weak spot I have come across is the gear and the spot welds that tend to split in a hard landing.
Doesn't OS make a 70 four stroke?

RE: piper pawnee gasser?
Thanks, Apalsson for the insight.
OS makes a 4 stroke 72 and also an 81. I think you're right as I'm going to look for a 70 - 80 four stroke for the Pawnee. I purchased the ARF yesterday and checked it out. It doesn't appear to very fragile but seems to be fairly strong and I ALWAYS go over any ARF's glue joints and try to beef up the landing gear. I've always had good luck with OS and Saito four strokes and I'm now inclined to go 4 stroke rather than a gasser. Two strokes and electric just aren't my thing.
I guess I'll put off purchasing the DLE 20 for now. I checked with my LHS for the DLE 20 (which they are sold out) and they said that a Saito 82 was more than enough for the Pawnee anyway.

Now if you are talking Pawnee with a gas engine, there is one sold in Canada that is real nice built. It cost more but it is one nice airplane. I may get one someday. Capt,n
P.S. I took the photo!

RE: piper pawnee gasser?
I saw one with a RCGF 15cc gas 2-stroke (Chines clone engine) at the field on the weekend. The engine fitted into the large cowling fine and low speed preformance was outstanding. High speed was fine. The engine performed well and sounded good.
According to the pilot, the only difficulty he experienced was that the cowling pressure caused the engine to run rough in the air. He cured this by drilling a hole in the carby diaphram back plate, connecting a plug and fuel pipe so that the carby could run from the ambient pressure in the fuselage.
I'm thinking of putting my Saito FG-14 (14cc gas 4-stroke in). It would fit easy, but I am currently having too much fun with the engine in a Pulse 60.
Having said this, I would be tempted by any approx. 0.8 4-stroke nitro. The low speed nature of the plane goes best with a more torquey 4-stroke (eg bigger prop).

RE: piper pawnee gasser?
I looked into the FG-14, but it is rather expensive and I'm not sure that I want to try a 4 stroke gasser yet. The RCGF 15 might be a choice that I will look into. Will the RCGF 15 give the Pawnee enough power to perform aerobatics well? I haven't heard or seen much on this particular gasser. Thanks for your input.

Thanks for the info. Do you happen to know or approximate the weight of the pattern ship this 15 was in? I'll have to look it up and see if I can find any more reviews.

RE: piper pawnee gasser?
I don't know too many details on the plane, he said he originally had a 120 nitro on it, changed to a hong kong 17cc that never ran right and now put the 15cc in it. I believe he said it was an RCGF or something, I know it was chinese and cheap, I think it came from hobby king I believe it's rear carb. The plane is nearly the size of my Ultra Stick Lite 120, just as long if not longer but shorter wing span, it fits in a long bed full size truck in one piece...

RE: piper pawnee gasser?
Thanks, guys. I'll be looking into both the JBA and RCGF 15 gassers, however, they might be a little much for the H9 Pawnee which really only takes a 80 - 82 four stroke. [8|
