To trash or not to trash...
Hey everyone, I have a brand new CRRC 40 which no matter how hard I try to start,[:@] will only start backwards. From what I hear the timing is only adjustable wiht a add on hall sensor which I cant afford now, As I am only 14and I spent my whole savings on my first gasser.[X(] I have tried many different fuel-oil mixtures and the one I have been most successful with is 40:1. My question is wether to sell this engine cheap (because the guy who sold it to me wont pick up/email back which leads me to believe that he sold me an faulty engine [beware Gravitybitesrc!]) or to give it to someone and have them mess with it... If I do sell the engine I would opt for a ZDZ 40.

These engines are notorious for have the timing far too advanced
The ignition system is not exactly the same as a CH or RCEXL type ignition but you can use the same procedure to set your timing at 28 degrees Before Top Dead Center

When Jody gets it back to you (Kudos to Jody!!!), try using your electric starter with a car battery or lawn tractor battery. Also, turn the prop back as far as you can away from the point of compression so the starter has a chance to rev up before it hits the compression. If you start it by hand, be very careful and use a chicken stick or very heavy glove. 40 cc can and has cut off some fingers or other body parts if they get in the way. Good luck ( I was flying a brand new K&B .020 Infant engine when I was your age).

...with a properly timed and powered electronic ignition, especially the ones using a hall sensor that will fire at 1rpm, along with proper carb tuning, lazy two finger flips are quite safe and sufficient for starting. Trying to compensate for poor timing and/or poor tuning with more agressive methods is what scares me

I agree. Note that I said "WHEN HE GETS IT BACK FROM JODY" Not all of us are adept at hand starting a new engine.

Yeah I'm with ya there! Some engines just don't like to start easy "cough ZDZ cough" I'm just teasing guys, don't take me too seriously there! I liked your safety pointers, the stick, the glove...these things certainly need to be understood AND respected

The correction process is not all that difficult, and a new sensor, if needed, is pretty cheap at leass than $5.00 for the part. You made a good decision in taking Jody up on his offer. Since he handles the CRRC line you'll find yourself in good hands.
As for hand starting an engine, if you have them set up correctly and the carb has a choke it's pretty easy. The correct timing and reaonable needle settings, combined with good prop positioning on the hub, makes things pretty simple. A key ingredient is always having the ignition turned on when flipping the prop through the choke and start cycles. Without the ignition on it's all guesswork where the amount of fuel in the carb and/or engine is concerned.

Start process I use is:
Igniton off.
Choke on.
Turn over by hand 'til the fuel is at the carb. (or push the purge bulb until the fuel line is full)
Ignition on.
Flip till it pops once or twice.
Put choke to half.
Flip 'til it starts and runs.
After brief warm up. open choke.
Warm up 'til it takes the throttle smoothly.
Go fly!

That is a pretty nice deal!!
Age 14 represented a "step up in the world" for me. I went from an .049 to an .09 that powered my Sterling Baby Ringmaster....in 1997!
Good luck with your motor

It'll be nice and easy when he gets it back, I'll even write down some instructions on exactly what his particular engine likes for starting. Chris lives at about the same elevation as me and uses almost the same exact fuel mixso he may not even need to touch the needles when he gets it back. We need more kids likehim in this hobby.
