I believe Fromeco is making large parallel LiFe packs. I have not heard of anyone making up parallel packs for true A-123 batts but there's nothing stopping anyone from doing so.

The technology and performance is so close between LiFe and A-123 it's not worth a penny's debate over performance and life cycle.

NiMH (though the poll has "Ni-Ma", and I assume that was what was ment). On my Ultimate I use a redundant 1450 mAh x2 set-up with a Smart-Fly BattShare and two switches. On my others just a single 2000 mAh pack and switch.

liFe seems to be as rugged as the nicads, handles storage in hot or cold environments, so I've gravitated to them for most of my flying, the nimh are pretty tough too and using them on several smaller 26cc size.  I kind of hate Lipo because they have short lifespans (1 season if you take care of it) but nothing beats their weight savings so they have a place in competition type models. Also, it seems so counterintuitive to have to run a battery pack through a voltage reducing resister that gets pretty hot (thereby using energy...) Never had a problem charging the lipo's, use the CUBE from TBM.  Anyone have words of advice on Lipo care, should they be expected to last more than one season?  Thanks.

I had a battery completely end it's life cycle on me in flight. Had the plane not had a redundant battery it would be history now.
T.O.M., Was it a 2300mah A123 pack that failed? Details??

The OP didn't define what he considers giant scale. Just from reading the posts I think there are many opinions of what is giant scale. Myself I define it as about 33~35% and up....

For instance a NiMh is fine on a 27% or so, but I wouldn't get caught dead trying to use one on a 42% plane with high power servos.

Agreed !
I also think we need to clarify some of the nomenclature in the poll.
I assume that
A123/LiFe is A123
Ni-Ca is meant to be NiCd
Ni-Ma is meant to be NiMh
Lipo - LiPo

And of course lithium ion, or Li-on.

I use the IMAA defination of 80" and above to define an entry level giant. Too many 72" glow monoplanes out there that could never truly make giant category even if they met the IMAA quarter scale rule.

I have been using NiMH on my planes up to 50cc.

I just completed my first 100cc plane (paint splotch matt chapman cap from GP), well I still need to do some things like set the throws etc., and used LiPO.

My 1/3 scale GTM DR1, my 94 lb 44% Zoroli DR1 and my scratch half scale D6 (86lbs) all run 4200 NIMH packs. 4 total for each plane; 2 for the radio, 1 for the engine, 1 for the smoke system. Very safe and reliable..........

2 X VPX 1100mah A123 packs for receiver and one 1100 mah nicad for ignition, for 50cc edge540 and 75cc extra 260.

Not sure what Ni-Ma is, but you can't beat two five cell NiCd or NiMH batteries connected via two separate switches for reliability. No regulators or other special devices needed. A simple continuity check and loaded voltage check before each flight and you are good to go.

35% and above: Two 2,300 ma A-123 for flight system, one 4.8v 2,000 ma Eneloop nimh for ignition.

Below 35%: One 2,300 ma A-123 for flight system, One 4.8v 2,000 ma Eneloop nimh for ignition.

Option for below 35%: Two 1,100 ma A-123 for flight system, one 4.8v nicd (size above 800 ma) for ignition.

I use similar but with this change.

Substitute A123 for ignition on all and on below 35% I run the ignition off one of the (2) a123's

I use two 1700mah LiFe's, one 2700mah LiPo and one 4.8v NiMh

1700mah 6.6v LiFe > HD Switch > BattShare > Receiver Ch:9
1700mah 6.6v LiFe > HD Switch > Battshare > Receiver Ch:8
850mah 11.1v LiPo > Smoke Pump
2700mah 6.0v NiMh > Switch > 6v Regulator > Ignition

The regulator simply keeps things at 6v for the ignition. A fully charged 6v battery can get up as high as 7.0 volts or more.

Edit: I use Hyperion LiFe and LiPo.
