Default DLE 30 and 60 size edge 540?

I purchased a seagull models edge 540 60 size and was considering putting a DLE 30 on it for power. I have never done gas before and am wondering if I am making a mistake or if this power option would be alright. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Will it physically fit?

Dont do it I had that plane the 30DLE is way way too much Put it in the 180 extra 260. Notice the DLE 30 swings a 20" prop do some measuring I think the prop will be in the ground!!!

My 180 is actually on its third engine now unfortunately!!

I started with a Zenoah G-26air heavy magneto version the plane flew great very scale but lacking in 3D power.
Went to a Cheap kit engine CRRC GF40i that engine fell apart!!
Now I have the DLE30 installed may get to maiden it this weekend.

The manual says to mount the prop at 125mm from firewall. from what i understand the distance on dle30 with included standoffs is 130mm.I will probably have to open up the firewall to accomodate the carb though. SORRY I was looking at the info on the first version I DID NOT KNOW THE INFO ON the rear carb version. I have read about guys putting a "I believe it was the CRRC26" on it and that is why i was curious aboout the DL

Last Saturday there was a guy at the field with a Funtanna 125 with a Dle30 side carb. Tremendous acceleration all kinds of power. Only use full throttle going straight up etc. The engine fit in the plane fine. 19B Vess prop

I Know that engine is way overkill for that plane not that you probably couldnt do it but it may look ridiculous and be a waste of power.

1: the plane usually swings a 14" prop DLE minimum is 18"
2: you would have to butcher the cowl to almost open.
3: Cut down the already small firewall and have to brace it back up.
4: plane would more than likely be quite nose heavy

Just look real close at the ramifications of trying to put a V-8 in a Volkswagon beetle then theres always the things you never think about.

Not to mention you would much more enjoy the 180 as soon as I got the 180 extra 260 the little edge was sold.

Oh and My personal experience soured me on anything from CRRC I will never in my lifetime buy anything from them.

farrout!

DLE30 is way too much. I have the same plane with a Satio 100, and it fly's  great.

I just put a RCGF 20 CC in another 540 about the same size but a little heavier.

I would not put anything bigger than a 17 or 20 CC in the Seagull 540.

Add five .60 glow engines to the nose of your plane and decide if that much weight would make the plane more fun to fly. It's not just about more power. More weight requires more power to fly, and more wing area to carry it. You would have a most unpleasant model on your hands. Plus it would look real dumb, making you look the same. No gas engine glory points in that.

Years ago I had a friend with a Bruce Thorpe Venture 60 / Su[per Tiger S61K. Was a real nice looker and flyer.

He was into converting Homelite weed whackers and the next week he showed up with a Homelite 25 weed whacker on the BTE Venture 60. He had shortened the nose and moved the servos to the tail.

The over weight plane flew and it did all the manuvers that the owner was able to do anyway but you could tell the plane was very heavy for the wing. Though he personally was proud of his conversion, he had ruined a beautiful good flying plane.

There is a picture of this Venture with the Homelite 25 on the Venture web site.

hey guys thanx for the input. It looks like i need to do some more research on all the ramifications of converting to gas. its just that originally i purchased a magnum 61 (because of the price) and the more i thought about it the more i think its probably not going to be enough power. I would like to eventually convert over to gas and the fact that you can get a gas engine cheaper than a large glow helps to make this decision.

thats correct, after fly my 50cc for a few months... i was thinking to make my small Edge to gas, i really hate to carry the heavy starter box, the nitro which cost a lot of money here and when cleaning the airpane all the oil from my 4 stronkes engine it was really boring. No i fly lik 8 times my Edge by weekend and afew my big one....after all day still have gas on my 1 gallon can, thats amazing. I love how clean the gasser are. Just compare the cost, my rcgf 20cc cost me $219 bucks, and .81 alpha o.s. $369 usd. If i compare the gas price vs nitro...will be the same deal.

I can recommend you jody at www.valleyviewrc.com or ron at www.southeastrcengines.com for gas engines.

i am in the process of putting a dle 30 on my edge at the moment, weight of engine plus ignition is the same as the moki 135 plus muffler it is replacing. Then need to add ignition battery and muffler about 300g so should have a ready to fly weight of about 4.5-4.6 kg, think it will fly just fine. If you search for electric conversions of this plane some of them on 8 cell lipo are up to 5-5.2kg and they say that it still flys fine at that weight(i'm not sure about that), but i am sure i can live with 300g more for the ease of running gas.

I like the idea of using a smaller engine. This also means i wont have to worry about ground clearance as mush since it will be swinging a smaller prop. The rcgf 20cc is a nice option. I dont know much about this engine so how is it on reliability and longevity? I looked it up at
http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/AEROVATE20R.html and they have it on sale for $189. Should I jump all over it or should I wait on dle 20cc from Jody which is about 9 oz. lighter. Currently there is no price on it and it is not expected till possibly October.

Does anyone have any real input on this engine?

I think the best gas engine for this bird would be the BME .90ci. Its a supertigre conversion

Hard to comment on an engine's reliability and longevity when it was just released to the public in the last couple of months.

I have to take issue with the concept of "a waste of power." LOL
I have seen V8 VW bugs, but if that is bad, how about a V8 Barstool?

Sweet! I rode one of the lawnmower-powered ones and it was scary enough!
