RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Alright, I'll admit I am new to gas engines and I have purchased a DLE 20 for Valley View for my first gasser. (Thank you Jody). I want to set this up in a Rascal 110 that has been sitting in the box for quite a while now. I also purchased an A123 2300ma battery along with an Ultra II switch from Hangtime Hobbies and a FMA Multi4 charger setup. I then went out and bought an Ultra (funny how so many of these products have Ultra in the name) Ignition Battery Eliminator so I could run it all off one battery. Never mind you guys that are not proponents of a single battery, it's done. My problem is I am not sure what plugs into what. The Syssa Ultra IBE says to plug it into the red and black ignition lead on one end and the receiver on the other end on a channel that has full servo travel to be able to shut off the ignition circuit. The Hangtime Hobbies Ultra (there's that Ultra again) II switch uses a single 3 wire lead to balance charge the A123 2 cell battery through the switch. One lead goes to the receiver, the other to the battery. I am left with the red, black and white male connector lead coming from the ignition. What am I missing here? Pardon my ignorance, but I may go back to glow if I can't figure this out.[]

One goes to the ignition pickup wire atatched to the engine, the other to a switched battery or however you have it setup & the other to a tachometer which is a neat option. Onboard or off. Crap now i want the tach lol!

O.K., I forgot the engine pickup in the equation, but where does the ignition get power from if the power lead is plugged into the IBE and the other end of the IBE into the receiver? The single battery is plugged into the Ultra chargeport switch and the switch is plugged into the battery port in the receiver. Does the ignition get its power from the receiver through the IBE?

The red and black wires are positive and negative power available anywhere in receiver associated wiring. It's all a common "buss". Like if you wanted to add a second battery to beef up amperage available to your system. Add a Y harness anywhere (like leading to an oversize rudder servo) and plug your second battery w/switch in right there! That setup not only offers max amperage to the rudder servo, it helps supply everything else going on as well - not to mention the extra redundancy of an extra switch and battery powering the system.

LOL Maybe its the sullivan smoke system I have added. Stock muffler with a Bisson smoke nipple = Instant cloud. Very impressive.

Maybe you've not yet tuned the LS/HS mix screws as yet???

BTW WOW does this DLE 20 put out smoke. Very surprising.

Iwill be lookibng out for your progress updates as I am interested in finding a model for this engine. The Seagull Edge 540 definitely looks like a suitable home.
Pictures please.

Can you please post some pics of your build and specially the changes/ mods you did. I have just started my build.
I am changing the UC to that of my earlier extra 260 - the ones with this kit are tiny in comparison.
I will use a 250 ml clear PET jar for the fuel tank. Will not use the rudder servo at the back but a pull pull set up.
I am using a hangar9 AL engin mount and will not need to cut the firewall.
Will post pics Soon....

Maidened my Seagull Edge 540 60 size yesterday. It has alot more power than the other engine I had in it. The plane weighs in at 9 lbs. 12 oz.. I changed out the existing tank to a 12 oz. tank. This engine sips fuel like as if it were being rationed. Took me about 18 min. of flying to use a little over half a tank. At this rate it is going to take me forever to use the break-in fuel (Not that I am complaing about the cheap flying).
As a side note I did have to cut the firewall to make clearance for the carb. I fiberglassed the firewall to help give it a little extra strength (Not sure if I had to do this or not, but thought it would be a good idea).
When I get a chance I will be checking out ''littlra'' throttle curve explanation on programming. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10...m.htm#10062619 This should definately help me out with my DX7.

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
In my defense this was my first attempt at a gasser. That is why it looks a little cluttered up. There are a few things that I will ber cleaning up and changing now that I understand a little bit more about this field.
I used Hitec 645 for the rudder and 625 for ailerons and elevator,(I'm told I should have did just the opposite)
I don't like theplastic control horns that comes with the model, so I always replace them with the dubro ones. The original landing gear is kinda soft. I replaced them with a set I picked up from TNT landing gear.
I'm sure others will chime in that my 12 oz. fuel tank is a little overkill and I would have to agree with them, because I could fly forever with it.
I am using the motor mount that came with the plane. If I would have took my time I would have rotated the carb, this wuld have made running the choke cable a little easier.( I could've ran it out the front). Somebody here has a nice choke setup with pictures (bellcrank choke setup) Iwas unable to access the pictures but perhaps A1pcfixer might be able to send us in the right direction for the pictures.

I do remember that bellcrank setup, and a bunch of us commented on how cool it looked!

jcb9901,
Wow, your eng 'box' looks darn similar to my H9 Twist 150 w/DLE20cc.....
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=10266851
Neither one has much room for anything.
Make note of how I did my choke wire.[8D]

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
OK, finally got a "decent enough" day to fly the GP 1/4 Scale RV-4 with this engine. After I sorted out having both the choke and throttle opposite from what I remembered (ooops... been a long winter) I needed to wind out both needles a bit to get going. After running for 20 minutes or so without the cowl on (Shell Air Cooled 32:1) sitting on the test stand, took it for a flight and it performed well... not flawless as my idle didn't seem consistent from throttle motion to the next... But no deadstick and pull was superior to my Saito 125 with an APC 16x6.
DLE-20 on an APC 17x6 turned ~8500 on a high humidity 65 degree day. Badly needed a throttle curve so I created a fairly drastic one and that made things much better. Hauled the 10+lb RV-4 around nicely. Good but not unlimited vertical and could pretty much hang it on the prop at the top of an upline but it was NOT going to climb straight up any more either! Will play a bit with props and tweaking the needles but just about as I expected. Not a ton more power than the Saito but only a few ounces heavier and just enough extra power to more than make up the weight differential.
It's not my DLE-55 powered sub-18lb Edge (which will pull straight up out of a hover) but it's very nice power for this airplane... more than scale and enough to help get out of problems. I need to downsize the fuel tank. I think it came with a 14oz and that's almost certainly what is still in there. I think I could have flown for 30-40 minutes on one tank! I know a 10 minute flight didn't seem to even take a 1/4 of it so maybe longer! Maybe drop to an 8 or 10oz and save some all up weight.
At ~$4 a gallon I can quickly get used to this versus the $25 a gallon that the Saito liked best! Love the sound and reliability of the Saito but fuel economy and the clean-up is so much nicer with Gas! If I can get the throttle linkage/tuning sorted out to make idle more predictable I'll call this a hit. Also will play with some props soon. I think this combo will get some attention at the IMAA fly-ins I intend to hit this summer.

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Hello all hope your enjoying Easter and time with your family. I am looking for some help setting up a throttle linkage using braided fishing leader like that which is used for pull/pull rudder. I've searched many threads and have not found any information on how it is done. I have the basics down but I'm not getting enough pull to open the throttle all the way. I have the cable attached to ball inks on each end and a short control arm on the servo, with a long arm on the carb. There is very little movement in the cable going from idle to full throttle. I have followed the instuctions for setting the carb and servo arms for half throttle that were in the gas for newbbie thrread. I can attach pictures if needed. I would use a rod but it just does not work well with my setup. Thanks.

I have seen the various RPM readings on various props. I am wanting to try the Xoar 15X11 but they seem to not be in stock anywhere. Has anyone tried a 16X10. Any thoughts. I am thinking its boarder line too much.
Love this engine just breaking it in on a 16X8 vess.

Thanks I was afraid of that, I am at a higher elevation as well. I am gonna give the 15X10 a try.

On my World Models P-51, the Dle screams with the 15x10 APC verses the 16x10 MA. Dle really lugs and runs outa steam with a 16x10, especially on verticals.

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Quick note/update on my GP 1/4 scale RV-4. Found the issue with idle (at least the immediately apparent one) in my throttle linkage not being up to snuff. A little slop goes a long way when the low end throttle accuracy is as critical as it is on the DLE-20! Might be the only engine I've ever run across that could benefit from a digital servo!
Now that i have direct/straight metal rod (not to worry, ball link is nylon) there is almost no play in the linkage and I expect better repeatability on my throttle positioning. Also dropped from the stock (I think 14 ounce) tank to an 8 oz so will haul less excess weight with a full tank of gas. Hopefully the rain will stop sometime this month and I can get another flight or two in and report back further on performance versus my old Saito 125 and suitability for this aircraft.
Hope to pick up a couple more props down at the Nall to try out on this combo as well. RPMs so far seem appropriate so staying with a 17x6 is my first thought... just looking for a Xoar laminate and a Vess to see what differences those make... Maybe I could try a 16x8 and hope for a bit more speed as the only thing I've noticed so far is that looping requires hoarding some energy and gets very slow at the top if I make it very large (which I think is appropriate for this airplane).
Wouldn't mind to try a 16x6 or 16x8 but the 16x6 would unload it a bit and not sure I want to go there. Need to double check what the max recommended RPMs are as I'm already at 8500 so unloading much further makes me bit nervous. Don't want to overrev and cause an issue.
