I finally got to run my DLE 20's today! One fired right up and the other needed the diaphram wetted before it would pump fuel and start. Both started right up on the factory settings which turned out to be pretty close. On the 2nd tank(s), I tached them. One was turning 9300+ and the other was 9400+. The props are 14-10 APC's. Right now I have the idles at 2000 rpm, but they need to be much lower as they still pull pretty hard. Is 9300-9400 rpm too high? I'd hate to blow one of these little guys up. The airplane is a KMP P-38.

9400 on new engines, seems high, unloaded may put them past their rev limit. I think 14-10 is too small a prop. Maybe if you went to a 3 blade you would be in the correct RPM range.

Thanks. How low of an idle can I reasonably expect?

I use an APC 16x8 or 15x10. I'd think a 14x10 is under-propped for this engine.

Hi

16x8 is a better option. Like the others have said.

Did you squirt fuel into the carb to wet the diaphram?

Thanks, Ernie

I can't get to the intake-side of the carb. I had to cut a hole in the firewall for the carb to go into. That also allowed me to install the tanks from the front. Otherwise, the only access to the inside of the booms and cockpit pod are through the wheel wells. A real PITA. Because the carb is angled, I had to pull the engine to remove the diaphram cover. On this airplane, NOTHING is easy!

Just flew my H9 Pulse 125 w/ DLE 20 up front all last week....what a sweetie engine! Pulled over 9000 and would ldle at 1900. That is one great combo... I flew it on Wed, Friday and on Saturday I started it three different times with only one flip of the Evolution 16-6. Yesterday it ran just fine but needed to use the choke on the first start. After that one flip and she was off and running!

Awesome tailskid! I loved my smaller Pulse. What's your battery setup? Tank moved back to the CG?

Thanks, Ernie

I have the tank as far back as it will go on the 'tray' and have both nicads up front - and the plane is right on the suggested CG - which means it is nose heavy ....I'm going to move both batteries back and see if I can fly inverted without much down elevator as is now the case. H9 likes to be very conservative on the CG. You have to LOVE that hatch and it's attachment method - good engineering.

Put 16-8 Xoars on them. You will be very happy

Had a wreck today and lost the ignition module somewhere. It was still attached when I retrieved the plane, or what was left of it, but dragging it through the corn field I lost it somewhere, so, I need a replacement, so what should I replace it with?  Up until the wing snapped off, the engine ran great, and worked perfect on the 4*120.  This thing went in nose first into hard dirt, but I had killed the ignition well before impact. Anything I need to do to the engine?

Gosh, so sorry about loosing the 4*. What do you think happened?

Tailskid, darn but you got me thinking about a giant pulse too. They still make them, right? How do you like that Dubro? soft mount? Running two batteries huh - what size?

Thanks, Ernie

The right wing snapped off doing mild aerobatics. It was an ARF, so my guess, poorly built. I had already removed the covering and thought I had repaired the wing structure so the wings were solid, but apparently not. Poor construction is my guess. I will know more when I find the other wing. It got too dark to see in the corn field to look for it. Gonna need a new plane to put the gear in. Ijust hope the engine is OK and nothing got bent when it hit the dirt.

I planted a DLE30 at over 100 mph when the whole tail blew off of my GP RV-4 during a high-speed pass. The engine was buried past the cylinder and the airframe was pulverized. The DLE came through just fine, as did the ignition. Ordered a new RV-4 the next day. It's amazing the abuse these engines survive, with a bit of luck.

Wish I could say the same for my ignition module but it is lost, all I have is the pickup harness and the spark plug cable.  I lost the box somewhere between where the plane was discovered and the truck, in the corn field.  That was a big plane, and even with half the fuse smashed, it was still a chore getting it through the corn.  The engine was running great too, and man was I enjoying the flight, just doing lazy rolls and loops, practicing immelmans, split s',  cuban 8's, hammerheads, and not at full throttle either, mostly half throttle.

My low passes looked good too, the wings appeared stable. I was quite surprised when it snapped off.

Sorry to hear about your plane! Regarding your module, do some shopping. You're looking for a module that fits a CM-6 plug. I would not buy a DLE #3 or #4 (20cc/30cc) module, but anything else is fine, will plug right in.

Pick the dirt out of the cooling fins and anywhere else you see it and give it a try! I've been pretty lucky after some unfortunate "arrivals" as well.

I did kill the ignition before it hit the ground, so the engine was stopped when it hit.  The PITTS muffler has a few dents in it though, but the choke and throttle move smoothly still.  Going to need a new fiber arm for the throttle, it snapped off.

So this one works? http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXYND5

Same here - I've "planted" my DLE 20 a couple of times and it came through fine. Pretty strong engines.

If the prop survived and there is no dirt in the carb, just give the prop shaft a gentle turn and note if their is a bearing problem. If not then run it on the test stand and you should be good.

That one would be perfect, but I'm pretty sure you can stay state side and do better regarding the price? Like here:
