RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)

    ORIGINAL: ahicks

Leroy - Is there a reason you aren't considering the Jtec?

Mody - save your money on the Stabil. Most quality 2 stroke oils will have a stabilizer built right into it. I have a chain say (a cheap one!) that has gone years with no ill affects. Some of my planes go months between uses - same story.

Now if I know ahead of time that I'm not going to be using an engine for a LONG time, I'll pickle it, but that involves more than Stabil....
I figured with the popularity of the DLE 20 I was sure that those selling it would have a Pitt's to fit it. Nothing wrong with the Jtech and may have to go that route. You can get one for a nitro engine, no problem, so I wonder when a manufacturer will see the $$$$$ signs. It's pretty stupid that someone isn't making it giving the numbers of engines sold. Can't get my cowl built without one and it's the last thing yet to do, bummer. Guess I'll call Jtech, you know of anyone else that may have one, Jtech builds to order and I had hoped to get one sooner rather than later.

Such as the way it is I guess.

Hate to sound like I'm on commission with Jtec (I'm not!), but if you talk with them, they have P51 version of most of their mufflers available? The can section is shorter and no longer protrudes beyond the "header section". The header section can be changed as well if necessary?

Talk to them. They've been at this a while now....

I don't know if this helps but this is a shot of my DLE 20 in my ESM 72" Spitfire. It is a very narrow cowl and the engine and JTec muffler fit with a little room to spare. Previously I had an OS 120 AX 2 stroke with a JTec and I had to file one of the corners to make it fit. I was amazed to see how nicely the DLE and JTec fit inside this cowl.

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)

If your engine carb is almost flush with the fire wall the standard Pitt's wrap-around with a 1 1/2" can may fit but it also blocks off the discharge air opening. The other one with a 1 1/4" can will be a better fit and at least air can get through there. I have the same problem mustangs have as my cowl is only 4 1/8" wide with the carb almost flush with fire wall so I think the compact one will work.

You should e-mail sales@jtecrc.com or call them at (704) 799-1658 with some measurements and or pictures of what you have an verifi that one from Tower hobby will fit, thats what I'm going to do. I just got one thats going back but it wasn't a Jtec and it had the big can on it and the depth from the mount was 1 1/4" thick, whole thing was nearly as big as the engine. Good luck with Jtec, thats where I'm going.

P.S. I have nothing to gain from this, I'm just in the same boat you are.

River Larry, if you give Tom at VV he usually has spare walbro carbs for the XYZ 20cc engine. They come std. with the walbro instead of a DLE carb.

I need to measure the gap between the head and cowl cheek on my 4*. I did such a nice job with it I hate the thought of cutting it up to fit the muffler I currently have.  Maybe I can find one slim enough to fit so I dont have to chop it up.

Either than or put the YS110 I have on it instead, which would require a new motor mount, and only if I can reach the rear of the FW for the new mount.

Here is what the plug looks like after the last 30 seconds of no spark before it slammed into the ground.  I pulled it off the DLE20 that is going into my replacement 4*120 that lost its wing.  It may also be wet from the WD40 I used to lube it all when I took it apart to repair the bearings from impact.

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)

    Hello Guys,

Yesterday on January 20, I finally flew my Yak 54 with DLE20 on it and prop is 17X6 Xoar beechwood. It flew well but somehow the transition from idle to WOT takes a little time, it’s not smooth. LSN seems to be perfectly fine so was the HSN, as I thought. I richened the HSN, but if I tried to go get it richer on HSN by turning counter clockwise it somehow started dying down, so I realized that’s the best setting.
I had a maiden, it went well, and afterward I had two more flights on it. And I did do some tweaking on HSN but somehow I couldn’t note the RPM as I was there trying to do it by myself. I’ve found some of the guys flying helis there and had a good chat with them. It’s a huge retention pond where we flew and it has higher grass but it worked well. First flight, I was extremely nervous my hands were shaking, and I got control of it, since I flew big size plane and a Gasser for the first time, after successful landings I was OK.

The questions, I’d like to ask y’all are, while flying the plane, motor did sputter and also on half throttle, I felt like it’s not running the way it’s supposed to be. I have not found any Gassers guys who may tweak it little bit.

I made two gallons of fuel and used 8 oz of Klotz oil in it. The measurement cup’s picture is also attached and I used 8 cups of these, and cup is 1 oz. Did I do it right?

Secondly I’ve put the cowl as on the plane well after being done flying and made the opening on top of it, so that I can access LSN and HSN while cowl is still installed. I did a little shabby job, but I think it’s gonna serve the purpose. Pix are attached and have I done it right or wrong?

Last question, I have noticed that the motor is throwing out the black oil or gunk, I noticed it on the stabilizer little bit on the elevator half, and I saw oil dripped, I touched it was tacky and oily feeling it’s completely black, so what does it mean? Have I done something wrong with the mixing of oil? Or is it time to change the plug. I’m not using stock plug I’m using NGK’s CM-6 which is recommended.

So please tell me what’s wrong?

I would really appreciate your inputs.

    Thanks

    Mody

Mody, the black crap is normal. That will die down as you get the carb adjustments closer and the engine gets some time on it. Maybe 30-40 tanks of gas?

That flat spot you're describing, if you have the high speed needle tweaked for max rpm, the low speed can cause that as well? It could be lean or rich. You'll have to play with it. Turn it a little one way or the other and try it? It'll be better or worse. Adjust as necessary!

Congrats on the successful maiden! It's about time?

    ahicks,

Thank you very much for that. It was about time, yeah!. You and other guys have always been very encouraging and I truly appreciate that. I'm now relieved phew lol. I wanted to have the video so bad, and I could have asked guys to do so. On one day I've pretty much gotten very friendly with them, shot the breeze and had really fun. Next week, I'm gonna ask those guys to make the video, I'd hand them my phone to do so. It's HTC One X, battery is crappy but the cam is really good.

I've gone through DLE20 manual, they say that ratio has to 30:1 though 32:1 ain't gonna kill the engine. I'd tweak with LSN and HSN more, and turn those completely to close position and turn 1/8 of each. I'd see how it goes.

Opening on to the top of the cowl won't make any difference right for needle tweaking? And I guess the fuel mixture I made was right

Thank y'all, I'd keep ya posted.

Give it more time, eventually it will smooth out, the more it runs the more you will find yourself doing fine adjustments until it runs very well. You are better off running rich than lean, and as long as it doesn't stall on throttle up or die at idle, fly it like that for a few tanks. Eventually it will idle nice and transition smoothly. The less you play with the needles, and just do 1/8th turns to fine tune, the better.  You can damage the needles and seats if you bottom them too much.

    acdii,

I'm gonna once close it all the way and turn it to 1/8 both LSN and HSN, after that I'd slightly tweak and I'd run HSN on richer side. On 12 oz gas tank I usually fly for like 12 to 14 minutes max, and still I'd have the fuel in the tank which may run for couple of more minutes, but I don't wanna take a chance. Anyway, Motor runs pretty good, and it does not die on idle or WOT. I'd continue to run it and hopefully, after 30 or 40 tanks, it would smooth out.

    Thanks for the input.

Tower hobby should have the Jtec compact mufflers at the end of the month they say, other wise it's 2 weeks from Jtec on order. $79.00 and will fit in the cowl of 60 size mustangs and sport planes they say.

    Thanks RiverLarry,

I have 12 Oz tank and if I ran 22 tanks, it would be 2.0 Gallons, since I won't be emptying the tank and landing it dead stick, so 25 to 28 tanks would be able to consume the two gallons fuel I have. Hopefully after having consumed 2 gallons, my motor would pretty much be rock and rolling by then.

    Thank y'all for the input.

Mody... Have you tuned up your engine for best performance yet?? Not a good practice to run gas engines sloppy rich as they tend to carbon up excessively rapidly.

This is my favorite victim of RC abuse. Note position of the fuel tank. No, I never did get around to finding out why it tends to poop out inverted with a full tank (16 oz), though I have my suspicions But operating at an altitude of 6 inches, you can betcha it's well tuned!

On HSN, where I noticed the sound of the motor was running on peak rpm and if I turn the needle little bit more, it would start dropping down the rpm and kinda bog down, so I kept it to the same position where it was. As I said earlier in my post that I'd try to turn completely LSN, HSN to the close position, and then turn both 1/8 and check how it's working. Honestly speaking, I don't even know what is the peak or optimum tuning for DLE20, since that's my first gasser experience. I'm trying my best to learn through y'all postings and experiences. This Saturday or Sunday, I'm gonna fly it again with the cowl on and see how does it fly and what's its demeanor!
