Hi
Good subject

Well ,................... the reason I,m following this thread is that I,m planning on putting one in a TopFlite Spit-Fire 60 . J-Tec is going to supply the pitts inverted exhaust system . Yes,............ it will be a tight fit . And since the TopFlite Spit-Fire comes out tail heavy , it just might be the perfect match . And most of all ,............... it won,t cost a lot to fly .

G`Day
Hooray!!!!
Finally someone not talking about 3D flying!!!!!

I have just installed the DLE20cc gas in my TopFlite 60size P-51 Mustang! Still in building stage, have kept the standard box muffler , was intending to use a Pitts wrap around muffler but with no real advantage as for as fitting inside cowl because the box muffler extends about 1"from the side of the motor and the Pitts from what I`v read is more, considering the canister at the back of the muffler has to extend past the part which attaches to the motor which is stated at 3/4" thick!

Will post some pics shortly!!!!!!!!

Hi dutchy50

I am very interested to see youre engine set-up with youre cowl installed . With the drop-down exhaust system , I think it will take out one side of the cowl , more than you think , ( I hope I,m wrong ) . If it looks good , I might do the same with the Spit-Fire .

I have assembled and built many mustangs . and have always gone with the pits wrap -around . Here,s a look at my TopFlite giant mustang with a DA-50r , with a wrap around . I think it doesn,t look so bad .

Are you sure it will extend 1 inch ?

I have a World Modles 60 size P-51D that I would like to put this motor in. I have a Saito 100 in there now that I'm perfectly happy with but if I have to I may have to do some more hobby therapy and buy a 60 sized Hellcat to put it in!

I have a World Models 70 inch P-47 that had a YS110S on it. I was worried initially if the DLE-20 would be enough, but now I am thinking it is going to be fun with a high pitch prop. I am 90% into 3D planes, but if it can't do aerobatics, it ought to at least haul ass. I think my Jug is going to be alot of fun with the -20 doing high speed passes.

Coincidently, I have a 65" seven year old Edge 540T that I just took a YS 110 out of and am about to put a DLE 20 in. We'll see how that goes.

Okay, I'll put a question in here.  This is a rather lengthy thread and I haven't read it all.

What are your opinions on putting this into a 1/4 Scale Clipped Wing Cub?  I'm still relatively new to the sport and haven't gone gas yet.  I've only done electrics.  Keep in mind I'm not going to be doing any 3D.    So, what do ya'll think?

Hi

1/4 scale Cub ,.............................................. I,d say you would have just enough power . with absolutely NOTHING to spare ,.......... too small an engine . I,ve already seen an excellent 28cc , fly a 1/4 scale cub and it was just right ( this engine is new to the market and is amazing ) , . So with that said , 20cc would be too small

Thanks for the input Michel. So is this 28cc a DLE as well? Also, what would you say about the DLE-30?

Hello
Has anyone have a photo of their P-51 cockpit? Am in the stages of building and am up to the area of cockpit installation (fit out), don`t have a clue how its suppose to look? It does not need to be too detailed just has to look like I made an effort!!!

This little engine is going to be a little hot cake I was at the hobby shop last week and the owner told me the EPA is now going to charge $20.00 a case user fee on nitro fuel. Thats goverment for you so add that to the already high price and guess what.

..........I was at the hobby shop last week and the owner told me the EPA is now going to charge $20.00 a case user fee on nitro fuel........
Any links to any evidence of such, or is that just another unsubstantiated rumor?

If there was any truth to such a rumor, the glow engine forum sections would be in an uproar. I'm not seeing such.....yet.
Actually, the EPA has not had any regulatory powers over glow fuel in the past (something new now?), and considers it methanol which they promote the use of.

Gas engines such as this DLE20cc will sell fine w/o such rumors.

Yup. I'm aware of that. But if someone thinks it's going to be too small, I'd like to err on the side of caution. I'd rather be too big than too small.

I've never flown a 1/4 scale but overpowering a 1/6 th scale Cub provided some real interesting take offs till I learned to advance the throttle slowly. It was much more fun with an OS 52 4 stroke in it.

Another problem with hanging the DLE-20 in the nose is that almost all 1/4 Cubs I've seen like a Zenoah G26 hung off the firewall and require little to no lead for balance.  Hanging a DLE-20 on the nose will just mean that you'll have 10oz of lead screwed to the firewall.

Also, a G26 is NOT overpowering a 25% Cub.  It's not underpowered, but it flies it beautifully with a little more to spare.  Another thing, it'll be able to fly the Cub at a lower RPM and therefore sound better than a -20 turning 7200RPM the whole flight.  Also, a lower revving motor will last for forever whereas you might wear out the -20 quicker if you're close to WOT the whole time.

Thanks Victor, I think I could probably swing a G26. It's a bit more than the DLE-20 or 30 but it sounds like it will be worth the it.

Anyone else care to put in the two bucks worth? (Inflation ya know!). Maybe more people with 25% Clipped Wing Cubs? (Although this really isn't the thread for this.)

I had a Clipped Wing 1/4 Cub (Sig kit built). A OS 160 twin was very nice in the nose. A Saito 180 (APC 18x6w) would hover the Cub at 2/3 throttle.

I agree with Victor in regards to the DLE-20. It will likely fly the cub, but you are going to be in the throttle almost the entire flight. The G26 will give the weight for balance, and the additional power.

Now that's what I'm thinking! Exercise a little throttle control! That way, if you really need it, you'll have the extra power. (Save a few bucks while I'm at it.)

Hi dutchy50

Wow ,.......... that looks great ,....................... not bad at all . Thanks for those pictures . Now I,m really excited to get to my Spit . But,............ I have 3 projects that have to be done before the Spit-Fire . because of YOU , I know the DL-20 will fit ,.. Thanks . Thats another decision made .

If I may ask ,.................. what are you planning on doing about venting ?

BTW ,................ you were right , the drop down muffler looks just as good as the wrap-around pitts

Regards

Michel
