Flew the Rev 70 \ DLE 20 this morning - flew \ ran great! (with factory needle settings, no less). I love this plane \ engine combination - probably my favorite plane.
Bob P - Good suggestion - I just installed filter-klunks in both my Nitro and Gas gallon containers.
Ahicks - Thanks.

No harm in that - I used to do that on my 100cc stuff....just paranoid about crud magically getting into the line when filling...many of the "old heads" maintain that filtering in the jug is all that is needed...guess it just depends on comfort level.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if the sound in the attached video clip is normal.
It's my brand new DLE-20RA which i started for the first time today. The engine has less than 2 minutes run time.
The first start was by hand and was just as you'd expect. A few turns to get fuel into the carb and then away she went. It ran for about a minute at 3,500 - 4,000rpm before i shut it down.
I couldn't get it to start by hand for the second run and it took a few cranks with the electric starter to get it running. I ran it for less than a minute due to neighborly considerations.
After those 2 short runs I noticed this play and clicking noise when rocking the prop.
It's my first DLE so i'm not sure if this is normal.

Custom PC - I own a DLE 20 and 30 and I'm pretty sure that's normal for these engines. Should be happening around TDC. I recently rebuilt both engines - that sound is still there, and they run fine.

For those that asked. That noise and play occurs at all positions. TDC, BDC and mid stroke.
I took the RA to the field today and ran it some more on the stand.
It hand starts fine and with a 16x8 it was getting 8000rpm with the needles at the factory position.
I put about 8oz of fuel through it today. The noise is still there but it doesn't seem to have any effect on the running.

I think this conversation about fuel filters deserved a comment.
I have lost 2 birds to dirt.
The first was a Cap 21 with dirt in the filter screen that made the forced go around end badly and the second was a Cap232 to dirt choking off the fuel flow at the filter just as I pulled up hard at very low speed. I hate eating aircraft to stupid things partly because they simply don't taste good.
Since the second, I have started using automotive filters before the engine because they are large enough not to totally fail catastrophically and do a great job of cleaning the garbage out of the fuel. Oh, I think it is a Chevrolet Chevette filter and I simply tie wraped it to the firewall standing up. The only noticeable thing was sometimes the first run took about 2 minutes before the filter was full of gas and that made some of the wilder maneuvers problematical since the engine tended to stall when the airframe was inverted with G loads too early. In other installations I have found putting the filter on its side solved that issue. The only issue you might have to solve is the fuel line size to the filter port size, but that shouldn't be a show stopper as they do make reducers.
YMMV

hoping someone sees this and can help... a few months ago i planted an ESM BF110 with dual DLE 20's. I was cleaning up the other day and decided to consolidate parts from the two ruined engines to make one... I bought a new cylinder head (Tower Hobbies - $59 and muffler - $19). while reassembling the frankenstien motor I inadvertantly broke the piston ring about an 1/8 of an inch off one end while putting the piston into the new head.
Am i screwed? Will that 1/8 of an inch less piston ring ruin the compression? The bearings spin really well... Feels like there's good compression if I spin the motor with my finger over the spark plug hole... what do you think?

contact [email protected] for a new ring. you can not run the engine with a broken ring. it will sooner or later ruin your cylinder/piston plus you will not get the full performance.

I had just sent an email to Frank for two DLE-20 rings and he replied that he's out of stock and not making new ones before mid-Feb.
If you're in a hurry you will have to order a spare from Tower.

Lots of guys swear by bowman rings and replace stockers with them on brand new engines. I put a stock replacement ring on mine when i went through it after a crash. Probably didnt need it, but they are like 6 bucks, so why not. The stock dle ring fits nicely with very little gap.
if i were you, id just order a dle ring from tower.
