RE: Where are the 40cc Gas Engines???
I'm looking for a very reliable 40cc range eng that is light and strong for a 14 to 15lb plane for aerobatics and 3D. Any opinions? or just go to 50cc and have it somewhat over powered?

You have tha CRRC Pro GF40 Kit. It's a kit, so you can check all the bits on assembly. Swap out the CDI for an Rcexl and you have a reliable engine.

Grossy2,
I'll look into the CCRC Pro GF 40 then. What's the cost on the Rcexl ign? I don't mind putting it together if it's good quality and reliable. Thanks

We have been running the Mintor 38 in a 78 Inch EF Extra and on a 71 inch AJSlick. More power over a wider power band than the 30's and at 2.2 pounds it fits the bill for the mid size planes.

I am looking to sell my Mintor 38. It is not quite broken in yet with less than 1 1/2 gallons through it, maybe 20 runs. PM me if intrested....I'll make you a good deal.
It is an excellent sport motor, with easy field manners. It doesn't quite fit in my plane's nose so its relegated to pretty paper weight status rightnow

Ghoffman, Will the Mintor 38 allow for 3D on a 14-15lb plane? Also, I think I would like the rear carb for better clearance. I will look into the Mintor as well. It has to have a reliable reputation so I can spend more time flying than troubleshooting! Don't want the reliable Zenoah 38 as it is heavy, would prefer the lighter small case engines.
Jaka, I have heard good things about the MVVS engs. I will look into the specs on it.
I'm doing some comparison research right now. I saw a new PTE 36cc advertised (looks good), light weight, rear carb, supposed to be good quality. I will look at reviews after comparing specs.
I have two 14-15lb and one 12.5lb planes that I would like to be able to interchange engs for convenience (mounting), gas mix, tune ability, parts needed etc if possible so I don't have to have to many different engines, rather than a different eng for each plane. I may get two or three (same) engs for these size planes. I have a couple 50cc planes that I already have 50cc engs for.
I appreciate the input, so feel free to give opinions.
MTK, I'll let you know if interested in your engine. Thanks, Rick

HI Rica.
Rexl CDI's are not overly expencive. Check out SDShobby, they can help you out.
If you were in Aust, I would be able to help you.
Cheers

Grossy,
Thank you for the input on SDSHobby. I looked for the ignition but didn't find it. They do have a very large site and may need to look harder. Rick

Search under Rcexl. They have diffrent CDI's to suit diffrent size spark plugs. I think the Cap size for the GF40 Kit is 14mm. You will also need to replace the Hall sensor, for the orginal CRRC one will not work with a Rcexl CDI.

Ok, I will need to check the price and compare how expensive with the eng and added ignition total cost. Maybe DA or DLE will come out with a 40cc?!

DLE just came out with a 35 rear exhaust, and DA has a 35 out soon.

Kmeyers,
Agape looks like a great place to shop as they are a Christian organization and would be good to deal with. And the prices are very reasonable. I will keep them in mind in my comparison shopping. Thank you. Rick

RE: Where are the 40cc Gas Engines???
ghoffman, good news on the DLE 35 and DA 35 coming out soon. These are going to be good possibilities and they both have a good reputation and DA has excellent customer service and warranty coverage.
Two of my 40cc size planes are built and have side carb and exhaust engs in them. I will check the dimensions on the rear carbs and exhaust engs and if they will fit, I think that will be better (more clearance). I appreciate all the good input. I will look for DLE 35 specs and reviews and see if I can get more info on the DA 35 coming out. Rick

I know, funny! I fly my DA-120 powered AJ Slick more than any other plane, because it is so reliable. I will buy a DA-35 in a heartbeat.

RE: Where are the 40cc Gas Engines???
Any info from DA as to when in the Summer? If soon, it would be worth waiting for. Would like to hear specs (prop sizes) and review. Hope it comes with 4.8 to 8.4 voltage ignition. Rick

RE: Where are the 40cc Gas Engines???
In my opinion the 40cc engine displacement size is being squeezed out by the 35cc,36cc engine on the lower end and the 50cc, 55cc, 56cc and 60cc engines on the other side. A 40cc engine tends to weigh about the same as a 50cc engine too. Then the 35cc size engines tend to have about the same if not better performance than a 40cc engine has too. So it makes it tough to choose one nowadays. Fortunately there are still a few 40cc size engines around, but I expect them to all but disappear in the next couple of years.

DA ignitions are totally different than the Rcexl. I don't know about 8.4V (2S Lipo) but they certainly can do more than 6.0V. In any case, I use the Tech-Aero IBEC on my DA-120 with no issues in ~165 flights. The Tech Aero IBEC steps the 2S lipo to 5.2V, and the DA seems to really like that.

These days, there are a few offerings of true 40cc as mentioned above in this thread. Weight-wise, it varies greatly.
The MVVS 40cc (beam mounted) mentioned in a previous post weighs 1,451gram (without ignition while the 50cc weighs 1,560grams and the 30cc 930grams
I personally have a 40cc installed in a 96" Rearwin Speedster that I use for aero towing and have found towing 5 - 6m gliders no problem with that combination (on a 22x8 Mejzlik prop and stock muffler)
The tow plane weighs a tad over 7Kg
In comparison, the 30cc mentioned likes 18x10 props, the 40cc likes 22x10 props and the 50cc works well on 23x10 props

RE: Where are the 40cc Gas Engines???
I've heard A123's (6.6v) are ok with DA ignitions but don't think DA has stated that. I'm not familiar with the Tech-Aero IBEC but sounds like it's reliable and I'd like to look at that.
I have been using the Wike IBEF on two 40cc planes with no issues. They are adjustable from at least 5-6 volts. If we can get away from the regulators it will be one less thing that can go wrong. I hope DA will step up the voltage on their ign modules.
