A friend of mine had a Roto 85 on a 220cm MSX-something-3D plane. It powered it very well, and it sounded very good on the available mufflers. On straight pipes it sounds crappy though.
He ran a Metts (Menz copy) 25x10, and that seemed to fit the engine very well.

He did have quite a lot of dead sticks until he added an electric fuel pump. Until then, pulling G´s would kill the engine due to it not being able to suck fuel by itself. Another friend runs his ROTO without fuel pump, and it seems to run OK too.

Valuable info... Thank you for that . My tank will be only three inches from the carb and I'm using large fuel line so I hope this will make fuel flow easily

The engine looks great but it seems to me that they could have made the engine more compact in size than it is. Does that carb sticking way out in the back cause any issues with mounting the engine in a plane?

The carb location was the main issue.... Depending on the model of course would make the biggest difference. The model I put this engine on would probably be of a worse choice for fitting but I liked the engine so much I didn't mind making the changes to the firewall and relocating all the components inside the fuselage. It's actually going to be a great combination and I look forward to flying it soon

Default ROTO Ignition Question

Pleased I found your your post as there's not much info around on the ROTO 85FS.

Wanted to ask a question of you if you don't mind ...... (and anyone else using the ROTO 85FS!)

I have recently purchased this engine and am keen to use the PowerBox SparkSwitch as a kill switch. The unit regulates the voltage at 5.9v constant

The ignition box for the ROTO states '4.8' - Now do you think the constant 5.9v will fry the ignition or be ok? Bearing in mind a fully charged 4.8 peaks at 5.8/5.9 I believe?

What were you using in your setup?

Any assistance in this matter appreciated!!!

Regards

Ryan

Hello Ryan the engine is purring like a wildcat and just adjusted the valves for the fourth time. Everything g about the engine has been excellent and I just changed oils a gallon ago which made it even better. I run dual battery redundancy and they are both 4.8v 2000 mah Nimh.... If you can't reduce the voltage out put to 5v I would send ROTO an email about it. Veronika answers all correspondance quickly. Here is the email address

hope that helped

Thanks Jimmy. All very useful info

I'm quite a newby to 4 strokes and you mentioned about 'adjusting valves'

How do you do this please and what adjusting do you recommend for the valves?

You also mentioned about changing oil. Do you mean you changed gas/oil ratio? What ratio do you recommend please? 40/1 or 50/1

Appreciate your help! There is really not much info out there

rk212 the valve adjustment doesnt get any easier on this engine....remove one of the rocker covers and rotate the prop and watch the intake then the exhast valves rockers cycle then line up the factory marks, one on the prop hub with the one on the crankcase. The rockers should be disengaged. The factory recommends .004 which is what I set the rockers at. Do one then rotate the prop to do the other side. Its all in the instruction manual if this insnt clear to you. I have been running Redline two stroke oil 40:1 with Seafoam as an additional additive. The engine really purrs

I've heard others mention Seafoam, how much are you adding per gallon?

Cheers

I've been eyeing this engine up for a ziroli hellcat that I am about to start building. I'm just not quite sure if it would be enough power, what do you think?
