50cc -Whose is the smoothest?

With price not being a factor what engine in the 50-60cc range is the smoothest / least vibration? I have a DA50 that is not too bad and a DLE55 that at certain rpm's will shake the crap out of my plane. What about BME ? I can live without a ton of horsepower if I could find a smoooooth engine. Thanks

RE: 50cc -Whose is the smoothest?

The problem with a BME is that it has more output than either of your other two engines:D It runs about as smooth as a single cylinder engine could be expected to run.

To answer your first question
(With price not being a factor what engine in the 50-60cc range is the smoothest / least vibration?)

The 3W 56 twin.

To answer your second question
(What about BME ?)

The first time I tried a BME, I experienced shaking - because -

When I opened the throttle - it scared the cr@p out of me - it was that powerful compared to what else I had been used to.:D

Of course that shaking was my knees and hands, the plane was smooth as can be.
(but I have also listened to some of the best in the business and they taught me how to tune an engine - That list includes you Pat)

Many engines will have an inherent vibration at one rpm range (usually around 2000rpm) as the dynamic balance is near impossible to acheive through such a wide rev range as we use. Good tuning helps a heck of a lot though.

RE: 50cc -Whose is the smoothest?

That inherent vibration speed always seemed to be at the speed I wanted to fly at.

This is what the BME 50 is made from and it is the engine power head from the Echo 530. The SB 1080 short block

Make your own . . . . .

Ahhh, but today's BME is a 58 and weighs very little;)

Well sense no one has mention the Taurus 52 i guess i will.it has to be one if not the smoothest running engine out there today.and has more power than a DA 50.i think Bill is still making them on a very limited basis.

I would second the comments on the Taurus.
They are very smooth for a single cylinder 50cc and will probably outlast their owners if you don't run them lean or feed them dirt.
In fact I think I will take mine flying today.

The 3W 56 twin.
This is your opinion, but did you try ZDZ engines or the new OS 55 ?

Hi!
Easily the MVVS 45cc and 50cc engines!
What ever engine turns a Mentz 24x8 wood prop at 6600rpm?;)

RE: 50cc -Whose is the smoothest?

The 3mm TOC 53 is one of the smoothest singles I have run. It also has a side induction carb which suites some applications. It has a 3 bearing crank. I understand that they have released a new version with a machined crank case. I have not seen one of these yet. Would like to know how it compares though??

I use one of these on my DA-50...

Power equals torque pulses! If well balanced, the engine with the least power runs smoothest!
. period. .

3MM-53 is the smoothest I've used.

Cheers

RE: 50cc -Whose is the smoothest?

Gotta go along with Pe's comments. In that regard, check the Zenoah line of engines. They are a little heavy and down in power compared to some engines, but are some of the smoother engines out there.

RE: 50cc -Whose is the smoothest?

Not only the power/weight ratio. but the double crankweb helps them as well in achieving better balance.

I´ll say the 3mm TOC 53CC, mine has the reed valve assembly and runs very smooth.

SALUDOS!!! (Cheers!!)

I will throw in my opinion, 3w 55xi CS. Smoothest running single anything I have run or seen. Awesome performance and one of the best engines I have owned to date.

RE: 50cc -Whose is the smoothest?

I have had bme 50, as well as several walkers, A&M, and have seen numerous DL, DA 50's A friend has a Taurus and it is smoother than any of the others I have ran. None of the singles will compare to a twin for smoothness..

Truckracer 10-09-2010 09:34 AM

RE: 50cc -Whose is the smoothest?

The 3MM-53 followed by the Taurus. Both very smooth running engines. Much smoother than any other 50 class engines I have used including DLE, DA, older 3W, etc. Yes, these are smoother than the G-62 but that could be expected as the 62 is a larger engine.
