DLE 55 RA Timing, What's Yours?

[TABLE="class: tborder, width: 100%, align: center"]
[TR]
[TD="class: alt1, bgcolor: #F5F5FF"]This question was posted in another place with little to no response.
I usually search before asking questions.
I did and just got confused on this issue.

I can't find a manual online for the 55RA.
The side exhaust manual says timing should be 44° BTDC.

I've read posts where the timing is not set at 44°

I picked up a used plane with a fairly new 55RA in it (S# 558) and it's timing is set at 33°
Supposedly the plane had a few flights on it, so I guess it ran, but I didn't see it
run.
I have not run this engine yet.

Can someone tell me what your 55RA timing is set at, or should be?

Thanks
Bob

They do not.
You try.

Check page 14 of the one with side exhaust.

I did Dan.
Like I stated in my original post, it says 44°

I've had those with bigger brains than me say that no gas engine should be timed over 30°

I'm confused about the DLE manual.

Does anyone here have real numbers as to what their DLE55 RA timing is set at?

Thanks
Bob

I believe it has been confirmed many times and in many different forums that the 44* figure is incorrect. Measured in the conventional manner, and that is CCW or normal rotation, 28 to 30 degrees is considered fairly standard for most of our engines and the DLE is no exception. It really isn't all that critical though and 33* is probably OK. It is certainly easy to back it off a bit from there if desired.

Too much advance may make the engine run rough, miss a bit, run hot, etc. With too little advance you just lose a bit of power. If the ignition is really retarded, the exhaust temperatures will soar and power will be way down.

From my experience, to advance the timing beyond 28 degrees, the power increase is less and less with farther advancement. Beyond around 34 degrees you begin to get into abnormal behavior.

If you get to advanced the engine will try to kick back when started. it can throw the prop also.

Thanks guys.

I'll set it at 28 if the sensor has the adjustment.
If it does not I'll put another sensor on it.

Take care
Bob

Just retard it as much as the bracket will allow. If it is 30 degrees it will be fine

Thanks

I'm on it...
