There is no magic in those old 2 stroke snow blower engines. Most don't even use needle bearings on the rod .... just plain sleeve bearings though they do have ball bearings on the crank. Under load, they do put quite a bit of fuel (and oil) through them which probably assures their long life. Most of these machines go to their grave with the engine still in good condition as the rest of the machine falls apart before the engine gives out.

Apples and oranges... there is simply no comparison between a heavily finned industrial two stroke that weighs 6 pounds and produces 3 HP, and a minimally-built competition two stroke that weighs 3 pounds and produces 6 HP. Saving money is always a laudible goal, but pinching pennies by adding 3 ounces of slightly less expensive lube to each gallon of gas, gambling that cheaper oil won't damage your high performance two stroke, seems to be the posterchild for "pennywise and pound foolish"

Never intended for there to be a comparison between a so called industrial engine and our airplane engines. It was just a side conversation that so often exists in these kinds of threads.

As for our engines being "high performance", that could be argued. If anything our engines have much more in common with a truck engine than they do anything that might be considered high performance. Like aircraft engines and truck engines in general, we expect them to put out useful torque at a relatively low RPM because that is the speed where our props work best. Then we expect them to be fairly light weight so we leave out some parts like an additional counterweight and rear support on the crank. Then we put them in an environment that is usually less than ideal, many times poorly cooled. So yes, I agree 100% that oil is important and not an area that one should skimp on quality. But as one tired old man once said, most "any oil is good enough if you use enough of it".

I'm still going ahead with using PWC synthetic oil in my H9 260 with an old, but good running, Evolution 45 engine! I will check the plug after the first couple of flights and if there is no visible signs on the plug that show it's a bad idea, I will keep on using it! One test is better than a thousand hypothesis's(educated predictions), but I did procure a gallon of motul 2 stroke synthetic oil to use in all my other planes until then! I'm NOT going out on thin limb just yet!
