OK 1 person using pennzoil what's everyone else using? Is there a good website for tuning a gas engine and the proper break-in process.

I know all about glow but this is my first gas.

RE: NEW DLE30!

Two schools of thought. One is to break in your engine with a 32-1 mineral oil like Penz, then after break in either go to 40-1 with Penz or 50-1 with a synthetic or semi synthetic. Other is to just use the oil you want to end up using, like a synthetic, but break in on 32-1 then switch to 40-1 or 50-1 after a gallon or so.
Either way, tune your engine for best performance, maybe 100 rpm less than peak (on the rich side) then fly it. No 3D or long uplines for the first half gallon or so, then just fly it like you stole it.

RE: NEW DLE30!

You know what? I have been looking at this engine really hard and wanting to buy one badly but I have one reservation and it is a big one to me. WHY don't engine manufacturers engineer these engines so the sparkplug extends off to the side at an angle. With the sparkplug extending straight out the bottom of your cowl, it is the first thing to break off in a nose over and 9 times out of 10 you ruin the head or at least strip out the plug threads and end up with a helicoil install. Been there....Done that....It sucks but it happens. DLE Sales Reps? Give this some hard thought for an updated version of what looks to be a very nice engine except...........[:'(] Speedy

RE: NEW DLE30!

Speedy, you can get a insert that screws into the spark plug hole that lets you use much smaller spark plugs. No more a problem & you can aways replace the insert (reducer) ! Capt,n

RE: NEW DLE30!

You missed my point! Why have the sparkplug pointed straight down in the first place? If it were out to the side it would be less prone to breakage and would also make for a cleaner installation and less protruding out of the cowl. Don't get me wrong here...I like the engine but why not make it less prone to damage. More engines are broken before they are worn out. I just feel this minor change would greatly improve the design as far as durability. Why do you think the new EVO 26 and 35 GX has the plug relocated from the vertical position on the earlier models. I am not saying the EVO is better or worse than the DLE-30. I am saying however that EVO had a reason for angling the plug to the side. Would you like to venture a guess as to why?

You could mount the engine 20..30 deg off set.

It could be the makers of the DLE 30 tried that angle plug. One thing for sure...the way it is desighned I am sure has a lot to do with its high power output for a 30cc engine. Capt,n;)

Agree. I think they want the electrodes close to the piston. I can imagine that would be better for the detonation. Even if the plug is angled, a firm impact would still damage the engine.

I understand about cleaner looks and I agree, but as it is, I would spend more energy concentrating on not landing on my spark plug.

RE: NEW DLE30!

jedijody, I know you run a business selling these engines ( and others) but have you ever got down to the "nitty-gritty" for fine tuning a gasoline engine? I do not mean this to be disrespectful. I am simply asking a question. I have a lot of engine tricks up my sleeve. Some I am willing to share and some I am not!!!! Depends on how well you behave!

Actually with the plug angled into the combustion chamber and having the plug "indexed" so the electrode gap is pointing straight down towards the piston the power gain would be significant over the plug as it is. I learned this trick drag racing. With the plug being vertical to the combustion chamber the plug gap is pointed out to the side with the spark being shielded by the grounding electrode. The vertical plug actually fires out to the side. The best burn is achieved with the spark igniting the air/fuel mixture straight down into the center of the chamber. This is getting very technical but I do know my stuff when it comes to getting the most out of an engine.

Check this diagram out for getting the best out of your sparkplugs whether angled or straight.. This is the kind of stuff that makes you wonder why some guy's engine will beat the pants off someone else with the exact same engine. Every little bit counts.

http://www.fly-imaa.org/imaa/hfartic...s/v1-2-15.html

This diagram is from the "Master" himself....Dario Brisighella. Always missed and never forgotten.

Concerning not landing on my sparkplug? Hey.....S__t happens!! I'm not perfect and neither are you. Your comment is worth a good laugh though. I guarantee that sooner or later you will break a plug on a bad landing. Especially if you fly a lot and in not so perfect weather. Giant scale racing results in a lot of nose overs due to the high landing speeds. :)

Good Post!

I have seen that drawing before, but couldn't locate it again.
I can't quite make out what the side angle is. Is it 10°?
Some of the other writing is difficult to make out. Is there a clear image of this?

Greg

RE: NEW DLE30!

The two angles are 16 degrees +/- and 30 degrees +/-. These angles are not super critical. That is the reason for the "+/-" reference. You can copy the image to your picture files and then use your picture editor to clean it up some.

I have been posting the modification to a spark plug (from High flight magizine) off & on here on RCU for years. Never any feedback if anyone ever tried it. Well I did and it helps starting and Idle-ing. My idle speed icreased without any other change!!! Daroi was noted for balancing Quadra engines. He called it over balancing! He done my cousin,s Quadra and boy what a smoother engine...it turned out good. Best Regards Capt,n;)

RE: NEW DLE30!

With all due respect Speedy there are many things you don't know about me, my past and capabilities. First is that I was born a smart*****, I didn't mean to cast any aspersions on your ability to safely land a plane, just having a little fun. Feel free to give back, I have a sense of humor that chuckles at myself often.

When it comes to 2 stroke gas engines, this ain't my first rodeo. My dad was an automotive machinist that built drag and circle track race engines for a living, I worked in his shop running lathes, mills, boring bars, hones, valve grinders, welders, etc. since I was 8 years old, I started racing motocross when I was 10. Later as an adult, I worked for Precision Engine Specialists and helped build LeMans V-8 race engines for some of the top drivers of the time. I then got interested in outboards and built highly modified outboard race engines (a very insane sport). The new wife at the time said risk your life or your heart, not both, so I chose to raise a family and don't regret a second of it. A few years back with the kids all but grown and gone I got the bug to go fast and turn left once again so I started racing pylon, I've been in the top 15 in national points since I started in the NMPRA. Last year I placed 7th in national points in the class I raced. So you see, I do have a bit of experience with two stroke engines, how to make them run and run well.

The DLE30 was designed with the novice gas engine operator in mind so I doubt you will see one on a giant scale racer anytime soon. I have done a ton of plug indexing in the past and on single cylinder engines there is never enough of a difference that good driving couldn't easily overcome. I had not seen the plug modification you posted before but it looked interesting so I thought I would give it try. On the DLE30 with stock plug and 18x10 Xoar prop it spun 7500RPM, with the modified plug it went 7500 RPM and it took the same number of flips to start with both plugs. Then I thought why not try it in a 55, after all it has an angled plug, with a 22x8 Xoar laminated prop I got 7350 with the stock plug, and 7350 with the modified plug. In all fairness I did not take the time to index the plugs maybe that would make the difference.

My point is that even though we can wring a few more RPM out of one of these engines, they currently have up to 2 to 1 thrust to weight ratio on most everything they are going on, 50-100 more RPM won't beat the pants off anything. Not to mention that due to the intended use and target market they need to be simple, reliable, and user friendly.

Believe me, I do fly a lot and I know $h!t happens, the wind at my club has been between 12 and 21 MPH all day and if you can't crab you won't fly much there, but if someone is breaking of their DLE30 plugs on landings you can bank that an angled plug won't be safe either.

I do not mean this to be disrespectful. I am simply asking a question.
Chill out Jody! Sorry I burst your bubble!!
I cave! You win! Jeeez!!!!!!
Where do I mail your big trophy?

I am glad you were born a smart*****....No one likes a dumb***** !
Look at my last post. My comments/replies are light, humorous, and informative.
You must be intimidated easily. My apologies. Sorry you had to type a short novel instead of a short reply.

Let's call it a truce. I was just trying to share some good information. This is my hobby. Hobbies are simply for fun and pleasure. I have nothing to prove to anyone. You don't want to know my past and capabilities.

Would you still be willing to sell me an engine should I decide to buy one even if the sparkplug comes out of the top? I promise I will do my best to not break it off!

Maybe the problem here is that we are both alike? Speedy ;)

Speedy, Speedy, calm down!:D One thing about these forums I don't like is that you can't see a persons eyes and hear their voice inflections to get a more accurate context and meaning from ones comments. I am not bothered in the slightest and I apologize for the long post but I got going and couldn't stop myself. I wasn't trying to 1 up you either, I'm sure your experience and expertise is as good if not better than mine. All of your points and comments are well taken, again I apologize for having a little fun at your expense.

No truce necessary, I think you may be right that we are probably a lot alike.

I'd be happy to sell you anything you need and I'd buy you a cold one after.[sm=wink_smile.gif]

Jody,
Should I decide to buy you will have my business. You and T.O.M. are the guys that suggested Stihl HP Ultra 2-cycle oil to me in another forum. I must admit...you do know your stuff. My engines have perked up noticably since switching over. Very clean burning and a slight increase in RPM. Speedy

I hope i don`t wack my plug in my sea fury. Its been known to tip over ALL THE TIME. But one mod i made that will help i hope, is to put the nose weight at the bottom of the fuse rather than the top. 1 kg of weight in the bottom of the cowl instead of the top of it. What are your thoughts on this guys.

I do not like to put any weight on a cowl. There is a tendency for the cowl to break or to strip out the mounting screws. I'd much rather put the weight in a tray mounted underneath the motor.

RE: NEW DLE30!

Day two of flying: This engine is Very powerful. I believe it has more power than the Saito 1.50 I had in the plane to start with. It seems make the plane go a lot faster than I remembered, but maybe that's because the plane was grounded half the summer. I put on the Xoar 18x8, and my top end is 7800 rpm today. The vertical acceleration is awesome! I cruise at about 1/4 throttle, getting my heart back in my chest, because if I keep it at full throttle it eats up a lot of sky in a hurry! A total flight time of 12 minutes, with lots of landings and takeoffs, and some adjustment time, and I still had about two ounces of gas left.
I've waited a long time for a small gasser like this. It was worth it.
Sam
