Default Hodges Hobbies Summer Race Fling!

Brad Clayton and I would like to invite all 424 and EF1 racers to a one day race at Hodges Hobbies in Andersonville, GA on Saturday, June 28, 2014.

The flyer is pretty much explanatory. Course workers will be supplied and racers will only have to race.

Come out and enjoy the comradery of your fellow 424/EF1 Racers.

Looks like I'll be out doing some flying this season finally, I have a 424 Viper ready to fly. What would be a good plane, motor, esc and battery for EF-1? Cost on these items? How many batteries would be needed for a race? I have chargers but don't know how quickly I'll need to re-charge. Just bring enough batteries to fly all day? It would be nice to get back to Hodges for a race.

Never mind. I just saw what Barry posted back to me in the other thread. I'll go through that and try to post an intelligent question if I have any.

EF1 Rules

EF1 Approved Equipment

I have three batteries for racing but, at my last race I used one all the way through and there was plenty of time to charge as they were running two classes that day. I have older chargers also. I have a Dinogy 2600 mah, 65C and at 5 amps chg rate it takes under 30 min to chg 13-1500 mah to peak the batt at 4.20v/cell. I also have two Turnigy Nano Tech 2700mah 65C batts. The only difference is the Turnigy weighs 48g more than the Dinogy. I am looking at the new Turnigy nano-tech A-SPEC G2 2600mah 4S 65~130C Lipo Pack their marketing makes it sound great. If you have at least 45 min in between flights you could get away with one battery. But, to be safe i would say aminimum of two. Three would be even better.

I will send you a PM with some other info.

I raced the last race with an Eflite Shoestring and it, the airplane, was competitive. It had the Eflite motor and esc. and i used the dinogy batt.

Folks have asked questions on other forums and I wanted everyone to know what is going on. One was was, is there a pilots list? I will get with Brad and post a list of who flying which classes.

For EF1, since we are flying off grass, wheel pants will be optional. That will be the only modification allowed.

Folks have inquired about RV hookups. Hodges has 20 RV sites with at least 30 amp shore power. At least four sites have 50 amp power and I believe water is at each site. There is a dump station at the field also. The fare is $20/day and you can reserve a site at hodgeshobbies.com

Barry is it practical to race both classes? If so I'm in for both. 424 and EF-1 correct? Got a Viper ready, a Shoestring and if my good and dear friends at HK can manage to send me my order, a Miss Dara too. Been waiting 2 months for that stuff to show. They swear it's in the mail. I'd better not get started...

Rick, several guys will race both classes and I have raced two classes the same day in the past. If you have the equipment and want to race two classes then do it.

Race is almost here!!! Weather forecast at this point looks good.
93 degrees, light wind, 30% chance of rain - typical June weather
in the South. Updated pilot list is on NMPRA website.
Barry held a training session with our course workers, all
looks ready to go.

Here are my EF1 weapons, an old Shoe and a brand spanking new Miss Dara. I haven't even flown it yet thanks a 75 day wait on Hobby King but plan to try her out this afternoon. The Shoestring was a Perry find and after some patching flies pretty well. Now I need to get the 424 plane ready.

Well she lasted almost a whole minute. Got through the first two turns pretty well and had it trimmed up, pulled a little harder for the third turn and it all went to hell. Not sure if something in the wing broke but the wing tube absolutely did not. Tail surfaces still glued in place and the pushrods and servos are in place. I don't know what happened. Motor is trashed and the battery shows very slight damage. I think I'll run it out in the open and re charge it outside in case it blows up or something. Just one of those days. The Shoestring flew great but my Christen Eagle wouldn't start at all. So does anyone have a used or new EF1 airframe available? I'm not kidding. I'm one of those wierdos who wants backups for everything.

The race was very successful. No r e flys, no rain, light wind for part of the day.
Great food, got started on time and kept things moving pretty well.
Results have been posted on the N M P R A website, will post more info
here soon. Thanks to everyone that came out and supported our race.
Big thanks to Mac Hodges for the use of his wonderful facility, Barry Reade
for all of his help, Tommy McCurley and Scout Troop 21, Kim Grim for her
Announcer voice, Brenda and Kelly for the great food. Scott Smith was
a huge help with running the matrix and computer during the race.
Plus everyone else whom I have forgotten to mention.

Thanks Brad for being my partner in this race. Thanks to all those that Brad mentioned and for me especially it was Scott Smith, from SEMPRA, that saved my bacon on the computer.

Sorry I missed it. After crashing the Miss Dara earlier in the week I managed to break the tail on my Viper while putting it in the truck to go to the race. I just went back to bed......

Rick, you know the saying "S7$$ Happens", it was just your weekend. Yes we missed your comradery and look forward to seeing you at the next race. As for the Viper tail that is very common and the Viper I flew at the race had been broken in two places and a bunch of other problems. Send me a PM or email and I can vector you to the threads that address those issues if you haven't found them already.

Here is a link to some of my Viper work
