Callers Job?
I am not a pylon racer. But I was just wondering what is the job of the caller in a q-500 race? Any help from you guys that have done this would be appreciated!! Thanks

RE: Callers Job?
Good question, The team work between he pilot and caller is key for pylon racing. The caller holds and launchs the model, then usely watchs the model fly down course the first time to turn 1 and will bark out the pilots name on when to turn the first time. Then the caller will run back to the pilot and use some sort of count to assist the pilot in getting around pylon 1 each time. For 428 racing when the model comes around 3 the caller will say "1-and-2-and-set-turn" in a rythem that is practiced before hand so when the model gets to turn 1 the pilot can bank on "set" and pull on "turn". The caller will try to calm the pilot and tell him of traffic and after the race the caller will help the pilot land, telling where other models are coming down.

When did you start drinking beer?
I thought Rum/Hard Liquor is more of your taste.
funone,
Just to add in what Splatt has already stated, your caller is your main Safety Person. He or she is there to watch out and try to get you out of the harms way, in case of any danger.

RE: Callers Job?
The caller's job can be more difficult than the pilot's!
At the very minimum the caller will tell the pilot when to turn at pylon 1.
He/she can also relay if too shallow or deep on 2 & 3, help to avoid traffic, keep track of laps and cuts, then drag the pilot over to the runway and direct the landing when it's all over.
The caller is much like a catcher in a baseball game; he often knows more about the batters (other racers) than the pitcher ("pilot") does. He'll know if an opponent is likely to hold a line or give it up if crowded. The caller keeps track of your laps and cuts in addition to keeping track of the other 3 lanes. The caller can tell the pilot whether or not to worry about the plane barking at his heels; is it clean? Is it even on the same lap? There's nothing worse than being pressured into a cut only to find out that the guy behind you already has a cut under his belt and is a lap behind. The caller will say "let him pass" then try to keep you clean for the rest of the race (loosen up the turns a bit). In most cases the pilot with a cut will not be able to lap you and win.
To summarize: a good caller is often busier than the pilot!

We haven't officially met in person (yet), but will be sooner or later. However, we do communicate within this forum and others.
When you come to Phoenix race, I will introduce myself to you. But until then... Keep those information coming.

RE: Callers Job?
Don,
Yes. Toni IS a Great Caller!
Indeed, when I had Toni called for me on one of the club races, we did very well. We won 4 rounds out of five when he called.
Good job Toni and thank you again for then!
Too bad for me I don't have Toni as my caller, but maybe a little bribery might probably help. Oops! Sorry, Tanner!
