Default Nats Updates July 10th - July 15th

Not sure if anyone is bringing a computer to Muncie, but lets use this thread to put some updates up during next week. I have a slow sprint card, so if its not too slow, I'll try to put stuff up (not pictures).

Anyone else??

Great day of practice on Saturday, everyone looked fast as always. Don't believe anyone crashed yesterday, and it was pretty nonstop flying with 2 planes in the air from 7 in the morning till 7 at night.

Were getting a little rain here on Sunday morning, tech inspection this afternoon.

A couple unfortunate crashes today in Sunday practice, but the carnage has been low so far. Tech inspection went well, and the barbeque was pretty good.

Q500 racing starts in the morning with the b matrix.

No good news today for me, had some unfortunate luck with idling glow plugs, and some radio interference.

others did well, but I don't have a copy of the standings. Check the ama site for the Nats news for details.

Bob, and "idling" plug is one that the seal is leaking slightly. It seals just enough to let the engine start, but it barely runs, and will not pipe up. I hadn't heard of this in several years, but I do remember a batch of plugs that had a few idlers about 12 years ago.

It says a lot for sticking with a given plug if you're not burning them up. In my #1 Q500, I think I've changed the plug out twice all season (running the HD's). If I had more than one idler at a major contest like the Nats, I'd be tempted to test run between heats each time I used a new plug, just to make sure it worked. All you have to do is start it up and see if it comes on the pipe, you don't even have to set the needle. You can also try a few drops of ATF or other colored oil and check to see if there's a leak around the plug or the stem (Super T still does this every time he changes the plug....).

Gary,

I had just test run the engine with that plug and it worked great. Even after I pulled it out, it still looked and lit up good.

I don't like to change plugs as long as it doesnt get too dark, twisted, pulled, or pushed in.

We are on rain delay this morning. There is a possibility that the final 2 rounds of qualifying will not be run due to the rain, we did fly 5 rounds yesterday.

Interesting, I've never heard of one working, and then not working after a test run...you've got me stumped on that one...

Rain delay...yuck..gotta love summer in Muncie! It's clear, sunny, high of 80, with 58% humidity here in San Diego today, too bad I'm stuck in an office though..

Times are always slow up here, but there have been a few sub 1:10 times.

Frazier put up a blistering (in this weather) 1:07 for current fast time.

Its odd, the motors turn the rpm, but they just don't go. You have to go richer than you would in Phoenix to have any shot.

BBQ tommorrow night, looking forward to it.

Speaking of fast times, we had a good wind and rain in the last heat we ran today. I won the race with a 1:24 if that tells you how bad it was. My glasses were covered in water and could hardly see the plane. They called it after that heat.

Today we crammed in the final 3 rounds of Quickie qualifying, then a round of Q40, then the finals for Q500, then 1 more round of Q40.

It was a crazy day if you were in the finals of Quickie and Matrix A of Q40.

Q500 standings.

1st Randy Bridge
2nd Matias Sallar
3rd Travis Flynn

Senior Class

1st A.J. Hemken (Go Team Minnesota!!!)

A long day, finished off by a great steak at the Texas Road House. If you haven't been to Muncie, its a good stop for one day of your stay.
