Tangerine Race, results and pics
Hi All,
I didn't see a post started about Tangerine, so I thought I'd start one. I was just going to post a bunch of pics that I take over the next 3 days, but after watching for the first 2 practice runs, I got the itch. A loaner motor, plane and 4 practice flights later, and tomorrow morning I'm entering 428. I'll try and stay out of everyone's way as I'm not expecting to be a front runner, and after my 2nd practice run, hearing the mid-air behind me (and guessing now the offered Q-40 is not available anymore), I'm not gonna get in the mix with borrowed equipment. I'll do my best to take as many pics as I can, maybe even getting some in flight shots, but I'm not going to promise anything.
Jason

Sweet Jason! Glad to see you getting the racing itch again. Just fly it like you stole it! Now you just need to find your way back out to AZ next month for the Winterfest Q500 race.
Good luck,
Gary Schmidt

RE: Tangerine
Well, day 1 is in the books. There were a few crashes (aren't there always) and a few near crashes (Jr and I to name a few). I managed to get a few pics from my camera onto my computer before it crashed (and it's not even flying). Day 1 results for 428 and final results for the first 424.
It was one of those December days... about 85ish, but there was some wind, about 15 or so, so it wasn't a perfect Florida day. There's been some great racing going on, even in the 424 class. JD Glass started just where he ended today, in First. I think there are 4 more rounds tomorrow, so we'll see what happens. It's just as much fun as I remembered it, even got myself into the mix a few times

RE: Tangerine
Well, today was much calmer and just as warm. 428 finished around noon, 422 started around 2 and 424 raced all day. I didn't get the results from 422 and 424 (computer was shut down when I got there), but here's the pics of the 428 top 3 and 424 top 3 from today. And the final results for 428.

RE: Tangerine
I personally want to thank Gary Freeman Sr., Gary Freeman Jr. and Marcus Blanchard. Without the help of these 3, I wouldn't have been racing. Sr. for loaning me the "beater" plane, Marcus for loaning me his dirt "covered" motor (he swore it wasn't crashed) and Jr. for all his help and calling (almost got him to smile for the pic too). It felt like old times again... man that was a decade ago.
My highlight of the event was my last heat. Vern Smith and I were the only one's racing in our heat. I asked him to go easy on me and he said I had nothing to worry about, cause if it was close he would end up with a cut...lol. Well, after 9 intense laps of back and forth racing (on video somewhere, please feel free to post it too) I screwed up my line going around 3 to 1 and botched the turn wide off of 1 and watched as Vern rocketed right by me. At that point it was over, but I didn't mind coming in 2nd. We all enjoyed that race so much. Gary also reminded me that I still had a plane a motor to return in the same condition as I got them. It was great!
After 428 was done and 422 started, I helped by being the pylon 3 judge (yes Marcus you did cut pylon 3 two times in a row) so I didn't get any pics of them racing. But if I heard correctly, someone turned a 1:04:..

RE: Tangerine
I unfortunately have very little to post for Sunday. When I arrived out there this afternoon, the race was over, half the pilots were gone and the course almost put away. Gary Sr. was 1st, Dan Kane and Gary Jr. were tied for 2nd, but elected not to fly-off, so Dan was 2nd, Jr. 3rd. Fast time was 1:02:.. by someone. Hopefully someone has the results they can post here. Oh yea, added a few more pics in earlier posts.
Gary, I won't have my new Hurricane's in time for Winterfest, plus I think I need 1 month without any flying events and January is as close to that as I will get. Just gonna race locally this year (F3A Team Trials this year at the Nats, so no Nats 428 for me), but 2008 Nats, and maybe Winterfest, I'll be there.
Now that Tangerine racing is over, time to concentrate on Tangerine Pattern. Even Gary Jr. is gonna get back into some pattern.

Jason,
Would you please email me at [email protected]. I would like to see if you might be interested in writing a few paragraphs about the race this past weekend so I could include them in my next article for Model Aviation.
I am hoping Gary F. Jr. might do the same, but I've tried to include crayon scribbles in the past but the editors rejected them.
Kurt

RE: Tangerine Race, results and pics
I missed the first day of 424 due to a root canal on thursday, but got to race saturday and sunday( got 2nd and fastest time on Sun.)
I had a blast both days, and enjoyed all of the people there. This is my 2nd year of racing and I feel fortunate to be able to be in the company of such a great group of individuals. The club volunteers are to be commended for a job well done!
