Default JB Weld that Thunder Tiger 40 Muffler

At a recent race there were several no flies on the launch.

At least one of those had a muffler that came apart.

Here is how you can minimize the chance of muffler failure.

Begin by removing the stock screw and nut from the muffler. Throw the screw and nut away.

The muffler screw is replaced with a 4-40 all thread rod and lock nuts.

I cut the 12" rod in half and did 2 mufflers.

Drill out the rear hole to fit the threaded rod.

Mix up some JB Weld and apply to the center joint.

Install the rod and lock nuts.

Apply JB Weld over the nuts and smooth as needed.

It just takes a couple more minutes to update a second muffler.

Here are a pair of mufflers.

Default RE: JB Weld that Thunder Tiger 40 Muffler

I have previously modified my mufflers on my TT 40 Pro's and OS 25FX's using 4-40 all thread and locknuts (but no JB Weld). At the Q-25 race last month, I had a OS 25FX muffler loosen, leak and "spin" in the middle of a heat. ( It didn't fall off) The loss of muffler pressure caused the engine to lose a LOT of power and although I WAS leading, I dropped back to 3rd after being passed like I was standing still. I suspect that the exhaust heat allowed the 4-40 all thread to "stretch" and loosen up. After that race, I went back and "pinned" my mufflers using small screws between the front and rear half. I haven't had time to test them yet.

The upshot of this post is that the 4-40 all thread BY ITSELF may prevent the stock screw from breaking and losing the back half of your muffler, but from my recent experience it seems to be necessary to add an additional layer of security either with JB Weld or a couple of screws.

you DID put the baffle back in, right? So it's stock and legal?

Yes,

The baffle is in place. See the third picture in thread #3.

I've been told the engine runs best with the baffle in place.

I have done similar with 6-32 rod and nuts.

Good post

One of mine is living on borrowed time, because I haven't done anything with it. The other has a 6-32 threaded rod, with regular nuts on first, then nylon locking nuts after that. So far so good, but the JB weld is probably a good idea, too.

I've heard that you should do the JB weld BEFORE you ever use the muffler, after it's been used it's very difficult to get all of the oil off the parts (and out of the pores of the metal) and it might not stick very well. Don't know for sure, never tried it.

I use the JB in the joint between front and rear. The ones I've done have been holding up fine, some of them were done after being run for a while so I wouldn't worry about it Fizz.

Dunk the muffler parts in lacquer thinner for a little while and let them dry thoroughly and you'll be fine.

A final wipe with acetone won't hurt.

Brake clean also works well.

Has anyone tried to spot weld the halves together?

I purchased a used TT Pro .40 that someone had JB Welded together the muffler without the baffle. It caused my enginse to run about 500 rpm slower. I attempted to take it apart to install the baffle again. I must say I had to heat the muffler to 650 degrees F in a oven at the lab where I work to get it soft enough to release. Some good stuff!!

thunder tiger mufflers even with JB weld, by my experience end up breaking- the only way is to TIG weld them together before you use them.............do a peripheral weld and then fill the two bolt holes. The TT engine likes back pressure - the more the better- so leave the baffle in place.
For those operating OS engines and where removal of the baffle is permitted, then yes OS do like the baffle being removed. regards trevor hnz

I too have had excellent results with JB Welding the two halves together. I clean muffler with acetone as Don S. suggested and also skuff-off the oxide layer at the joint/glue area. I've never had one work loose after this remedy.
