.15 sized pylon racers
Hi,
I read that there used to be (or still is ?) a class for .15 cu in (2.5 cc) pylon racers in the USA. I have a piped MDS .15 and would like to build something fast for this as a training plane for jets so I thought that a .15 sized pylon racer would be ideal. Does anyone know where I can find a plan or (ideally) and ARTF of such a thing ? Many thanks, Boo |
RE: .15 sized pylon racers
The 1/4 midgets were fragile and not designed for a rear exhaust + pipe.
In your position I would scale down a Weston Magnum - wing flat plate 3/16ths balsa - upright engine and either fit twin fins or a V tail. Should be well mental. Incidentally I had a MDS 15 great little engine 24,000 +rpm on a toothpick but it is noisy really really noisy. Hope your club does not have a noise limit because it won't pass. |

RE: .15 sized pylon racers
1/4 Midgets did have rear exhaust, but it was just a straight pipe coming out of the back. Non tuned, or muffled for that matter. Pipe was about 1/2" round by about 4" long. Not sure if a 15 sized plane is ideally suited for a Jet trainer though.

RE: .15 sized pylon racers
Back when QM's were .15's, it was my favorite racing event. The Nelson .15 used to run around 27,500 on the ground, and with that mini-pipe, it was quite a sound. I don't know if I'd call them "fragile" - they were glass fuse, sheeted foam wings just like the F1's, only smaller.
I wish they still ran the QM15's here.. lots of fun! |

Check out Matney Models at www.matneymodels.com , he has three different QM15 short kits available. Fiberglass fuselage, foam wings cores and plans; as far as I know, you have to supply your own wood and hardware.

Take a look at Wild Hare R/C they have a LR1-A that would be what your looking for. Fizz I've still got a Conquest 15 also, but just bought a QM.40 so no budget left to do anymore projects at this time[:o]

RE: .15 sized pylon racers
As long as we're talking about .15 sized QM planes ( or what USED to be QM) - was it Ron Young that used to customize the conquest .15's with an ABC piston/sleeve combo, shaved down fins to fit a smaller cowl, etc?
I still have a couple of N15's, a stock conquest, and one of these customized ones. Just wondering if I was remembering the name of the guy that did the mods.. |
RE: .15 sized pylon racers
Fizz, not sure about who used to work them. I had a deal with a guy I knew, He would buy a couple at a time from someone and use them for a couple races and replace them. That's where I came into the deal! I got nearly new ones for next to nothing and still ran like new for very little money!Dang, wish he was still around I would love to get a deal like that on some Nelsons!!!

Fizz,
Here is a picture of my Ron Young modified Cox Conquest .15 for QM. He converted them to ABC as was mentioned. Also here are three other rear-exhaust engines that were popular in QM at one time or another. My Rossi came directly from George Aldrich. He said it was the best-running stock Rossi he had ever seen and decided to not modify it. The Goldhead Taipan .15 is usually fairly cheap on ebay. I can still hear those little screamers picking up RPM around the pylons. Loved the QM 15 Class, too bad it went away. The last one is a Nelson .15 if you've never seen one. |
RE: .15 sized pylon racers
Dan - thanks for the pics! My Young Conquest looks like that, I've got a Rossi courtesy of a good friend of mine, and there's still 2 Nelsons in my engine stash.. Guess I should look for one of those Taipans to round out the collection.
I agree, it's too bad that the class went away. I found a box of carbon fiber props the other day, too - one was marked "28,100" on it.. two or three of them were right out of the mold, not even finished yet. Those were wicked little knife blades, eh? |
RE: .15 sized pylon racers
Yup, loved QM.
I still have a glass DH-10 fuselage and foam wings around here someplace, and two fiberglass Rivets fuselages and maybe 1 set of foam wings. Also have a HOB Shoestring kit but someone started to build the nose section. |
RE: .15 sized pylon racers
I have a couple of mid-wing Stingers in the basement, and I might still have the fuse for my P63, not sure on that one. I also think I've got the fuse for a "tater chip" up in the attic.. and maybe a sheeted wing that needs LE, TE, and tips.

Hey Fizz,
I just remembered another Taipan .15 I have. This one has the head fins and gold anodize milled off by a friend of mine who scuffed up the original finish whilst landing inverted. It looks pretty wicked but is no different than the regular one. |
RE: .15 sized pylon racers
Hey Dan, Would you be interested in trading those Rivets parts for a LR1A Formula 1 short kit? I have fuse, cheek cowl, wheel pants, firewall, and wing cores. I'm working on first one and don't really have any way to justify the second one to the wife. Let me know if you want photos.

Getting the engine is handy it's the plane itself that is the thorn in the side.

This is a kit for QM 15, but I have no idea what it is or who built it, can anyone help... I would like to have plans or illustrations for it. Any information will do, thanks

Scott,
It might be a Prather "Little Toni" I know it's not a Tsunami because it has cheek cowls. This Tsunami went to Scotland with Don Imrie so I don't have it any longer. |
RE: .15 sized pylon racers
