.15 size pylon planes
 

Call me weird but I have this burning desire to build a .15 size pylon racer from back in the day. I have looked around but but can't find anything from back in the 70's or 80's as far as old kits, not even sure what was available back then. Does anyone have any info on what was winning back then and the hot set ups? I would be interested in buying old plans or even kits if someone wants to part with them. I have the capability to plot airfoils and cut foam wings so building from scratch is not a problem. I have also raced Q500 for a few years so the speed and piloting skill is not an issue. One other question, where is a good place to buy balsa since Lone Star burned down? When I do a search on quarter midget all I get is the new QM 40 stuff.

Matney models has some .15 size kits like a nifty looking Rivets.
If you ask nicely BobHH may be able to hook you up with a Scat Cat.;)

I learned to fly in 1988 on a sig kadet mk IV, my 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc plane was a scat cat, it was a steep learning curve. I actually made some aluminum templates for the fuselage and tail feathers for the SC. Made some airfoil templates too. About that time lone star burned and also had a hard time finding 2" foam for wings.

I have seen the matney models, not a big fan of the rivets. I like the Sig Doubler II style. If I could get some names of planes I could search AMA, MAN or FM plans for such.

You could probably get Greg Doe in Smyrna TN to make you a kit for a P39, I am sure he still has
his molds. He is in the phone book.

I had one 15 sized (sorta) Q500 kit cut a couple years ago, I don't have any more now or probably in the near future so I'm sorry, but can't help you.

There has got to be a few QM 15 kits still floating around, it was a pretty popular event.

Duane Gall has my QM 15 Estralita (Gager) kit and is making molds off the fuse. He should be pretty close to having it finished. This is a sweet looking little plane. I'll check with him if you'd like to see if he'd be willing to sell a fuse that you could cut a foam wing for?

I'm waiting for some info on a Prather Little Toni kit from another member here.
Do you know the names of any other planes? The AMA has a very extensive plan collection but it is not searchable
and if you don't know what your looking for it's all most impossible to find a certian type of plane.

Try House of Balsa as MFG and the kits were, Shoestring and Miss Dara. There was a Stafford kit of a Mustang. Others included Ricky Rat, Miss San Bernadino, El Bandito, Miss Paranoia, Pole Cat, Heinkel, Estralita, Shark, Napier, Folkerts , and so on. Plans wise, Fred Reese, had many that he did and released with the magazines as plans in Model Builder and Model Aviation.

Hope this helps for names.

What were some of the engines being used in the planes? I know of the Cox Conquest .15.

at various times: Supertigre G15, Rossi 15, Conquest 15, Ron Young conquest 15 (abc piston/sleeve setup), Taipan 15, K&B rear intake/side exhaust 15, and finally the Nelson 15, two versions - 12mm crank diameter, 15mm crank diameter.

There are probably others - but those are the ones I have in my "collection".

More questions.
What size prop was used?
Was nitro content limited to anything?
Did the rules require the planes to be a copy of a full scale plane? Seems they were.

If I remember the rules correctly, they had to be "recognizable replicas of full size planes that have either raced or were designed to race (or speed record attempts)".

I had a Spirit of St. Louis QM that had the K&B .15 QM motor in it. ( do know how it got approved legal but it did) If I remember we were limited to 15% nitro in the fuel but don't quote me on that. It was a truck and a friend of mine T boned me between pylons 2 & 3 with his P-51 glass fuselage QM. This was in Hawaii and the wind blew all the time and they were really to small for that kind of weather.

Yep, 15% fuel, supplied by the race organizers typically, like current Q500 and Q40 races.

Mini-pipes on the engines, no mufflers. Noisy little buggers.. but it was way cool listening to the N15's on the race course!

I spoke to my friend, he can do a fiberglass fuse of a Mustang and a Stinger, he may be able to cut cores if your interested also. Just let me know.

the Folkerts was by Jim Deyoung, the Polekitty was by Gail Jacobson, and the Heinkel was by jim Gager. they were all top competitors in their day
