Extreme Flight 87" Yak cowl and U/C fix wanted
Hello all,
My ageing 87" Yak as started to show some signs of age. Its probably 5 years old now but has had only very little use.
The cowl has come loose and pulled the front bulkhead away. The U/C and pipe tunnel are starting to move around.
Where can I find details of the fixes for this?
Regards,
Rodders

Sounds like basic maintenance fixes for any aircraft. Not to be rude, but any owner should really be able to do these simple tasks.
If you have done no building or repairs before, perhaps post some pics and the many owners will likely chime in and lend good advice.

Just go back and glue the stuff. Thin CA works great for getting in those tight spots. Those cowling tabs are known for coming loose from vibrations. Get out the thin CA and go nuts. Use balsa and thin CA for bracing if necessary. This will keep weight added to minimum.

RE: Extreme Flight 87
Thanks,
Actually not just rude but a pointless reply. I am a very high level builder and have made planes from scratch to a very high standard.
I thought the idea of these forums was to learn from the experiance gained from others as well as pass help/advice to others.
I was after a recognised repair from guys who had put hundreds of flights on this plane and been there and sorted it, not a worthless reply.
For what its worth I already glued the Cowl mounting blocks in once (quick fix). The upper mounts are now pulling the whole bulkhead off with them.
Nitro wing need not reply.
If anyone has done a fix that works on this plane and would be kind enough to tell me the best fix, I would be really grateful.

Rodders

Ok you can scratch build but need advice on simple maintenance and gluing? c'mon man dont tell me to not post, makes you look even worse
Its not like the plane has a histroy of falling apart and needs a link to a thread of common fixes. Just get in there as Joe said and whatever others may chime in, but it sure does not sound complicated at all.

Hello,
Unless someone has acually made a structural repair that works with this plane, could you please divert your attention elswhere.
As stated I've glued the blocks in allrady and they are still fixed to the bulkhead. The bulkhead has now come loose.
I was thinking of a cowling ring picking up on more location points than the current 4 tabs.
If I hear nothing I'll work from scratch.
No more use more glue, don't you know what you doing type replies.-Please.

Rodders

Small diamater wooden hardwood dowels can add a ton of strength. Somewhat like pinning a firewall. If you can get a drill and insert them into the problem areas, you should have success. You would have to drill through the fuse and covering? The spots would be small though.
Adding 2 more tabs would be beneficial, did that on a 50cc Edge, and ended all elongating and loosening of the the cowl
Also regluing joints several times, likely creates a weak layer, as some glues will shear off old glue joints easily. Getting a little 180 grit or coarser on the joints will help in bonding.
30 minute epoxy is good to use on top after thin or medium CA is used. its not as brittle. To reduce vibration, make sure the prop is balanced as best possible.
If its stored over the winter, it may be best to do a full service/ repairs and take out the motor and tank and anything else that is in the way.
