Default Brand New: 35% Hangar 9 Extra 300 - Build Thread!

Well guys, here it is. The brand new 35% Extra 300 by Hangar 9! I've never done a build thread before, so figured this was a great oportunity to do one since several people have been asking about one on this brand new bird, designed by Mike McConville. Price paid was $1099.

THIS THING IS HUGE! I honestly couldn't believe the size of this bird when I opened up the packages. The guys at my LHS were literally swearing because it was so big... lol. Mike based the design of this plane around the old Extra 260, but with many improvements including: double carbon fiber wing spar design, CF main and stab tubes, CF tail wheel, redesigned motor box, improved fuse rigidity, titanium hardware, cowl ring, as well as many many other changes & improvements.

http://www.hangar-9.com/Products/Def...ProdID=HAN1055

Specifications:
Wingspan: 105" (2.65m)
Length: 98" (2.50m)
Wing Area: 2003sq in (129 sq dm)
Flying Weight: 27-30lbs (though some are getting it in the 26lb range with ease)

I've never owned a plane this high in quality or this complete out of the box. Honestly, the dubro hinging is all complete, as is the control horns on every surface! Since those are my 2 most hated tasks of ARF assembly, I had a huge grin on my face to say the least... The biggest amazement to me upon unboxing (which was superb by the way; you can see the solid chunk of wood that runs through the fuse to keep it from moving in the box and also prevents collapse) was the massive cowl! I thought I'd be able to fit my shoulders inside it upon opening, lol. I couldn't believe how little was left to complete. The tank was complete and mounted even. I'll be swapping it out to save 4.5oz for a Fiji water bottle setup as I've done in the past, but for those wanting a pre-done setup, it doesn't get more complete than this.

The hardware package looks superb, including full ball linkage hardware with titanium adjustable pushrods. There's a lot of improvements on this bird, and I'm really looking forward to the build. Because it's so complete, I honestly can't see this taking me more than 2 evenings to do, but I'll probably spend 3 or 4 going through it for this build thread.

I've got all the gear ready to go out of my 33% Yak 54, but unfortunatly our first IMAC competition of the year is happening this weekend, so the build will have to wait few. I'm still undecided on my engine choice as well. I may just swap over my DL-100 for this bird, but I'd like to pick up a new engine for her while I'm at it. Likely a DLE-111 because of $$$. If I decide to spend the money, I'll opt for the DA-120 or MVVS 116, we'll see.

This thing comes will full fuse length dual tuned pipe tunnels that really have me wanting to try a pair... Oh and I forgot to mention. Included is a 35% scale pilot figure & panel as well! The only thing I need to add is my electronics, engine & a CF spinnner.

I'll be back with more build pics & progress shortly, but for now I'm out to practice my IMAC routines for this weekend's competition. Thanks for stopping by!

Yep, it is. However, I'm the one who discovered the opti-kill issues on the big A9 thread on FG... Mine's worked great since I reversed the opti channel about 60 flights ago. Range is night and day vs what it was in "NOR" mode.

LOL....you sure you didn't get a 40 or 50% by mistake?? Oh wait...the specs are the same as any other 35%er....lol.

Seriously though....it is amazing, at least to me, that quality that many of the ARF's have now and the accessories included. I added a Pilot RC 35% Yak to my fleet this year....VERY NICE!! I still enjoy building but it is also nice to be able to "shake a box" and have a great looking and flying plane these days.

ENJOY........

Thanks! Ya, I mean I can't take much credit for it, but I too am amazed at the quality of ARF's lately, especially in the GS stuff.

Sorry for the slow progress on this build thread. We had our IMAC competition this weekend at our club which I flew Sportsman. Took first place, but it was only me and another guy in my class, lol. Weather was beautiful today for the unknown's and rest of the known rounds.

I hope to get some more build progress and pics up this week. I just received my 48" Extreme Flight Edge EXP, so I've got them both on the build table at the moment, lol.
