Default Fiber Classics/Composite ARF 2.6 Extra

Just getting started on the build of this plane and thought I could start a fresh thread for some questions about the build.

I appreciate any comments and help since this is my first large scale aircraft..

I started with the rudder cable exit holes since I am sending it off to be painted. I bought two exit hole scuppers to cover the slot made for the cable, and carefully dremel-ed it at the location the manual said.

It seems to be a incorrect location. I have had to dremel backwards almost 2 inches, maybe three... and still the cable will appear to rub?

The way it is set up, I put the rudder tray in the location in the middle of the fust that it fits, put the servo arms out , crossed the cables as they travel aft, and held the horn off the rudder where it will be located..

Any suggestions?

Rob,

The manual is wrong. I have built 4 of these and the cables have never come out at the location suggested by the manual. I traced the fuse onto the building bench and worked out the locations from there.

Richo,

I appreciate your response..

Well since I am taking it to a paint and body guy to get the paint job done, I guess I am going to try to get him to fill and sand the gaping hole I have made.. I can start over then..

Rob,
Richo is right, while I didn't lay it out - I eyeballed it and it's close enough for goverment work. FWIW my slots are centered with the LE of the stab. Still, they could go just a bit further up. Your's look way back there. (Wide too...)

Rick,

Where are your servos mounted? Did you use the tray that came with the kit?

If I locate the servo tray in the location almost centered between the wing nuts, and position the servo arm out on each side, and take a string out the back, the point is almost at the trailing edge of the horiz. stab, not the leading...

I have taken the plane to paint shop and they are going to fill and sand my huge mistake.. I like the small slot a lot better.. I will just have to figure out the lines better..

Are you using matchboxes?

Is it better to use one receiver or two?

I plan on using the 8411's but thats as far as I've got with the radio gear..

Hello Rob,
I used a servo tray from Aeroprotect. I didn't like the looks of the one they supplied, but I guess it works (It is rock solid - that's for sure). However, the stock one has to at least be lighter. Check out the pic.
I am using a Futaba radio and 8411's throughout except for the smoke 3004 and throttle 9602? I forget. I programmed the rudder and Aux1 so I didn't need a matchbox for the rudder, and I used two matchboxes mounted on the wing root.
My 9 channel reciver is fine so I think you only need one, but I had to Wye connect my second battery with the smoke servo since I ran out of slots in the RX. Just enough though and I think one is suffient for a 33%.

Ordering the servos, etc..

What would anyone reccomend for wiring this up?

I have 8 8411's on the way.

I use a futaba 9cap transmitter..

I have never had this many servos to deal with!

what size wire should I use on extensions?

the manual does not get into wiring it up much... I guess I am supposed to know..

THanks for any help,

Rob

LOL,
I bought so many freaking sizes I probably have enough left over for you borrow and finish your plane. If I recall right I used two 48" (longest Futaba you can buy) for the elev servos to the receiver (each on it's own channel) another two of the longest for the Outer aileron servo to the wing root. Two shorties 6" I think? from the inside servos to the wing root - matchbox mounted on the wing root. Then two 6" from the matchbox to the receiver. The rudders are plugged directly into the receiver. Oh, and one Wye for the kill switch / backup battery.

I just kept buying &hit until I could get it to work LOL
RickP

OH, and don't foget the all important plug keepers...

Thanks for the info on the servo extensions. I'm going through the painful process of getting all the extra stuff needed to put this thing together. Will be getting my batteries and servo extensions from www.batteriesamerica.com as I have had good luck with them before, and their prices are very reasonable.

Ryan, I can make servo extensions. I made all of them in my Sukhoi, made them for my jet, and for my buddies jet, none have failed. Can make them any length and I use HD wire.

Cool, we'll work on that. A few pennies saved on the big project certainly won't hurt.

I'm planning on two 1900 Nicad packs for the receiver, and a 1400 pack for the ignition. I'm expecting to get 5 flights out of that combo. Am also planning on using Y-harnesses for the aileron servos, and am considering a floating bellcrank pull-pull setup for the rudder as that would eliminate any fighting between the servos. Anyone know where I can get a floating bellcrank setup?

You may want to eventually program both sides. With the Wye you won't be able to program Flaperons for 3D

Why not? Im sure he means just one Y per wing for the dual servo's.

Yep, that's what I meant. I have seen three Y's done but what a painful waste of a computer radio's mixing capabilities. I think one Y for each side should work pretty well and I should be able to match each pair relatively closely.

Sorry, My bad
I didn't use any Wye's on the ailerons. My wing servos go right into the matchboxes. Then a shorty into the receiver.

How are you going to match the servos with that set up? Neither of my 8411's linkages lined up perfectly throughout the servo travel so I would not have been able to do that.

FWIW, I used matchboxes on my 33% too.
