What is the largest radio control airplane you guys have seen? Do you have any pics or web site addresses? Are there any planes larger than a 1/2 scale?

Several years ago at the Joe Nall they flew a HUGE old timer. I can't remember what it was, but the engine was a half-VW two cylinder. Seems like the wingspan was thirty feet or so. It was 1994 or 1995 when I saw it, before they moved to Woodruff.

The Staudacher hasn't flown yet so it don't count.

IN 1943 THE US GOVERNMENT FLEW A RADIO CONTROLLED B-17 INTO THE MUSHROOM CLOUD OF AN H BOMB TO STUDY THE RADIATION EFFECTS. THIS IS ALL DOCUMENTED ON VIDEO AND SHOWN DISCOVERY WINGS. THE B-17 HAD A W/S OF 103FT 9IN. AND FOUR WRIGHT CYCLONE ENGINES.

Well, NASA flew and crashed an RC 707! The purpose was to test a fuel additive that was supposed to prevent ignition of fuel spray. That's a big RC plane, though I'm not sure if we could really consider it is the same class as that sweet B-29 above .

Picky little points: no H-bombs until 1949, no nuclear bombs at all until 1945. Possibly you meant 1953...

Saw a 2/3 scale J3 in RCM a few years back. A photo showed the builder getting some shade sitting under the wing at a fun fly.

that staudaucher is incredible. Is there a point where big is too big? I would think it would be boring knowing a bit bigger and you could jump in yourself. Id hate to imagine the contruction cost of such a large plane. hmm..

Default High-priced Staudacher

I remember when the guy was building the big Staudacher and if I recall correctly he has well over $25,000 in it. Seems to me it would take some really big cajones to fly that thing with that kind of dough in it. Well, like the song says, "different strokes for different folks."
