When I looked at the aileron linkages on the control horn, the nut and screw had loosened up and fell completely out. The moral I learned from that story is dont just assume the factory control horn linkages that they give you are ready to go. You need to check each of the screws in the linkages to make sure they are tight and even put a little thread locker or ca glue on them so they dont get loose.

I have am using 2 LiFe batteries which power a smart fly board. I am using a Futaba 14 channel reciever (the one that came with my Futaba 12FG radio.) I am running all Hitec 7955 servos for the ailerons and elevator and I have one Hitec 7950 for the rudder. I have one more LiFe battery that runs my smoke pump and a NiMh battery for my ignition.

Ya, thats the one. That little screw backed out and the aileron came disconnected from the pushrod. This is only the second plane I have used a smart fly board on and so far they both seem to work pretty good. I have my 2 LiFe batteries pluged into the smart fly board and then from there it is supposed to step down the voltage that goes into the reciever and send full power to the rest of the servos. On some of my other smaller planes, I have run LiFe batterys directly into my reciever with no regulator and that setup has worked just as well also.

Is that a loaded question?

Thanks for the heads up on that screw backing out. What happens if the smartfly board fails?

Not at all. I'm just curious about the reliability of the smartfly system. If both batteries and switches are tied into this one unit, where is the redundancy?

I guess the plane would loose control and crash. The redundancy factor it is know for is if one battery goes bad, it will automatically isolate it and use power from just the one good battery. I think though if you dont use something like a smart fly board and plug both batteries directly into the reciever, you might need a battery isolatorer or a battery share device in case one of your batteries goes bad. Ive been told that if you have two batteries plugged directly into your reciever and one goes bad, it acts like a short and drains the power out of the good battery alot quicker than normal. I dont know a whole lot about all this battery and electronics stuff, it is just information that I have been told by someone else or read off the internet.

Not much progress. Upper flying wires done. I'm waiting on the servos and SWB standoffs to arrive. I'm running out of things to do until they do. I can put the lower wires on and get the cowl ready. The cowl is 2 piece. That will make engine access easy, you only have to take half of it off to get to it.

Davidgeorge, what size are the blind nuts in the firewall? I can't find that any where in the manual. This is a strange manual, its mostly pictures.

RE: Hangar 9 Beast
not sure if this is much help but a guy came to our field with the hanger 9 beast a week ago and was running a bme 115 if memory serves me correctly, seemed to have plenty of power to hover and climb back out of it. so the da 120 should be plenty of power to fling it around in any direction no problem

That is the same baord I am using as well along with two hobbico 3200 mah LiFe batteries. I hear the Fromeco switches are really good, I personally have not tried them though. I opted to just go with some simple MPI switches that have a built in charge jack so I dont have to take the canopy on an and off.

RE: Hangar 9 Beast
Thanks Davidgeorge.
The rudder servo and pull pull is installed. I used the Dubro system because the cables looked like better cables. I took the advice about the bolts coming loose at the horn and installed 4-40 screws and lock nuts. I have the cables crossed as per the manual and it seems to work fine. I used a double loc SWB arm on the servo.

The cowl is mounted. I still have to make holes for the mufflers. I'm not real happy about the gap between the cowl and the fuse but there's not much I can do about it. The holes are all pre-drilled with blind nuts pre-installed. The 1 inch standoffs appear to put the prop about where I want it.

RE: Hangar 9 Beast
Davidgeorge, when you plug your wing servos in, do you plug them direct to the Smartfly board or do you run short extensions off the board to eliminate plugging and unplugging to the board?

For the top wings, I have extensions that come out of the smart fly board and travel all the way up the cabane struts and stick out the top center section of the wing. I then plug and unplug the wings from the extensions that stick out the center section of the wing. For the bottom wings I have the servo lead sticking up through the top of the wing and then I feed it into the fuselage from the bottom and plug it into another extension that goes to the smart fly board. So to answer your question, I regularly plug all the wing servos into extensions and leave the leads in the smart fly alone.

The tank is here. I decided to try the Fortitude tank. It's 32oz. The quality appears to be good. We'll see. I'd like to have a roll of the fuel line that comes with it. This stuff is not going to come off the fitting.
