Hi David...

[link=http://www.chiefaircraft.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=standoff]Chief Aircraft[/link] have a good selection and are state-side.

I bought HT metric bolts from a local specialist here in Canada but I have seen a (limited) metric selection at Home Depot.

Good luck!

Any comments with regard to installing the radio gear directly above the canister?

I'm thinking about applying a heat shield to the underside of the radio gear tray.

Cheers

Do a search on a guy named gravy goodness. He make very nice billet mounts for the da60. He will make it any size you need. You may need to check for him on flying giants.com

Looking good Goose. I was refering to the ball link on the aile servo arm connection. I thought the close up pic was showing that and not the elev servo arm.
You are faster than me. I got the 50CC AW Extra 300 two weeks ago. I just got one wing panel set up last night. What is a good source for stand offs? I am using a DA-60 and it needs a shorter stand off than the 50. I saw some 1-1/2'' stand off's on PSPMFG with bolts for $20. The bolts at the lumber yard here are junk.

Looked at your wing pic again. The ball link is on top of the servo arm. Maybe the edge is different from the Extra?

Hey you're right.

I thought you were talking about the horn instead of the arm.

Interesting... I'm going to go and look to see what that does to the geometry and decide whether or not to change it.

Thanks!

Hmm... the pushrods are pretty much parallel to the wing/stab surface and I just looked at my Ultimate (which is hanging on the wall of shame) and I put them on top of the servo arm then as well.

It doesn't actually say to put them under although the pictures clearly show that they are.

I'm going to leave them as-is until I do the throws and see if it causes any issues or someone chimes in here to give me a great reason to change them.

Thanks Dave!

Looking good Goose! You have to love the QB. It should be ready by next weekend, right?

Ha ha... hey Hill...

Yeah I do love it, everything just goes together so well.

Seems like you got yours sorted out, congrats on the maiden.

It probably would be finished by next weekend, however given that we still have 3 months of snow, I'm in no hurry.

Oh and my order (canister/sparkswitch) from Chief is nowhere to be seen, I'm kinda stuck for the next while. Guess I will be doing all the little bits and pieces till then.

Cheers

Goose, with all the vents in the lower fuse and gap between the pipe. I really does not look like heat would be an issue. I have not run one like this, but I have ran exhaust through a GB Ult with no issues.
I see what you mean about the geometry on the aile. I am going to set mine up per the pic/plan and check it when I set the radio up. There is not a lot of room in there with the ball on the bottom. I hope there are no issues with full up throw. The push rod will get closer to the wing at this deflection.

Thanks Dave...

I hope you're right on the heat concern... when finished the top of the canister will be less than 1" to the radio gear tray which is full of holes and has my Rx, sparkswitch and possibly batteries sitting on it.

My buddy Scott had a canister that eventually burnt the balsa at the far end of it over time so it does run hot. I still may install a light heat shield.

The only issue I see with the pushrod geometry is that at full up, the nut on the underside of the servo arm (in my config) 'can' hit the side of the servo. I can envisage this being worse with the ball end underneath but of course we would trim to stop that from happening which would in turn limit the amount of up throw. I don't think that is an issue as by the time it hits the servo there is a considerable amount of up throw.

Anyways, cheers.

I did my other wing half and one elev half today. Only thing that realy stuck out with the ball link.... when there is full deflection the pushrod is parallel to the wing/stab. maybe that was their thought process???? Either way should really work. The geometry is just better in different places depending on how you do it. When i look at the pics for the elev half. One pic shows the ball on top another shows it on the bottem. May drop AW an email on Monday just to get some clarification.

Like you say it works in either configuration so I don't see an issue... sorting the final throws will highlight any problems.

Glad you got some work done on yours, any pics?

Cheers

Default RE: Goose's 50cc Aeroworks Edge 540 (orange) assembly thread...

hey goose. thanks for the info on the mounting. 1 thing i took for granted in the beginning was not listening to my buddy when he suggested getting the pitts. Obviously using the stock DLE muffler would mean "total kill" on the cowl. I just ordered the Jtec wrap around pitts(slim) and was wondering if you have any feed back on it? which pitts did you install? and is it true that i might face some problems in mounting the cowl as most of the forums i have read indicated some sort of mod on the cowl mounts.
In reference to aileron and tail links, i too have it as per the manual and im sure with a little bit of EPA tuning, throws wont hit the servo( i am using the spektrum 6030's with 1 inch hangar 9 arms). I have also ordered the Wike's IBEF V 2.1 from troy built for my ignition powering and kill as my plan is to have 1 main power source in the aircraft. As a redundancy, i will have two 2200 7.4v Lipo(nano tech 35-70c) in parallel going through a dual sky 8amp linear regulator with flag switch.
I would appreciate any other tips as there are not too many guys at the field with aeroworks 50cc's.

No problem Tumalik...

The pitts muffler you see in my pics is a [link=http://www.bissonmufflers.com/en/muffler.html?mufflers::listing_id=1138710]Bisson[/link]. I have had good results with J-tec mufflers as well. They are not cheap but are light and strong. It was installed on my [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9941661]Aeroworks 50cc Ultimate[/link].

There are a variety of wrap-arounds for the 50cc engine that will work, shop around and find one that fits your budget.

Typically you will not have to modify the cowl at all except for carving a hole to allow cooling and to clear the small part of the engine head.

There are a bunch of ways to setup your 50cc bird. From your description you are doing all the right things. Ignition kill is absolutely necessary for safety and the Wike's seems like a good unit although I haven't used one.

Two batteries are a good idea as well as is the flag switch.

Sounds good.

Good luck.

Got this answer in the AW forum. I will take and post a few pics in the next day or two.

David

"We place the ball links on the bottom of the servo arm to keep it straight at full deflection. This transfers the most torque to the surface when it is needed most. Using a 1 1/4" arm should keep the ball link from hitting the case. "

Goose, you are gonna love flying that plane. I've been flying the AW 50cc Edge since early last year. I did add some tri stock on some of the joints under the hatch. DA-50, carbon tuned pipe, Vess 23C. The AW Edge and the AW Yak are my two favorite aero-bats to fly.

Oh, the balance rig that comes with it made my Edge tail heavy enough to be too sensitive on the elevator for my tastes. I ended up adding 4oz under the front of the motor box. Your canister may fix that. My CF pipe doesn't weight anything. If it balances with the included balance tool, just be ready for the pitching.

Good luck with that plane!

Thanks a lot TMS... good to know.

Which hatch did you add tri-stock under?

Going to be a delay here guys, the canister hasn't been shipped yet. The manufacturer is backed up but they (Chief Aircraft) expect it in any day.

Here are a few pics of my linkage. Looks to be about the same spacing as yours. I also threw one in of the DA-60. Notice how much further back the engine mounts are compared to the 50. Hence the shorter stand offs.

I always start strong and fast but rarely finish the race

I will post some pics of my pushrods at deflection later tonight for comparison to yours.

I followed your Ultimate build thread, it went pretty fast. I kind of tapered off on the profile build thread. Are you still flying it?
