Hey goose.
Got to play around with the cowl again and as you can see in the pictures, the muffler has forced me to cut just beside the head. Not so happy about the way it looks.
BTW, what fuel tube size are you using? is the size below 1/8th ok?

Hey Tumalik...
Looks good buddy, honestly you are not going to notice once it's flying.
Not even close-up, in-flight photography [link=http://www.goosesworld.com/aircraft/_rcairshows.html](like mine)[/link] will upset you.
A tip for next time: Apply masking tape to the cowl where you intend to cut makes for a much cleaner edge and minimizes paint chipping.
Cheers!
(PS) Sorry, forgot the fuel tubing question: Yes, the size below 1/8" (3mm ID) is listed as 'Medium' here in Canada works just fine. If you have a choice, get the very supple stuff... Tygon I think.

Vo,
DLE 55 it is! just finished with my cowl. Now back to setting up my throttle, can't seem to get it right... keep binding in idle and on full. Played with EPA but i have a feeling my servo is 1-2 mm lower than it should be ;(
So you have the DLE on the edge too? how was your build?
Goose,
Thanks for the masking tape tip! taped all the edges and left a 1mm gap to clean her up... looks super!
been on my throttle setup for an hour now EPA and rod length just does not seem to work in killing the binding...
Also noticed my rudder seems to bind every now and then? how much tension should one have on the pull pull? i think mine is just fine, considering that i have at least 1 mm of play when powered up. One thing im sure to comment on would be my supa loud spektrum servos, chatter ain't enough to describe the symphonic ching, ding and tings !!!

RE: Goose's 50cc Aeroworks Edge 540 (orange) assembly thread...
Good news Re: Your cowl.
Unless your throttle rod is physically touching something (like the firewall) it's unusual that you would have a binding issue. The difference in height between the servo and the throttle arm rarely makes a difference.
Fire us pictures so we can figure out what's up.
The pull-pull should be firm but not overly tight. Here's my trick for setting it up.
[ul][*] Tape the rudder so it can't move.[*] Turn your radio on, servo plugged in and centered.[*] Setup one side. The tension should be tight but not crazy. Your servo will protest at the asymetric load.[*] Setup the other side best you can.[*] On the pull-pull wire next to the servo, push down and see if the servo stalling gets louder or stops. If it stops, tighten that wire by pulling the bolt out at the rudder horn and screw the ball end in 2 or 3 turns.[*] If the servo noise gets louder, tighten the other pull-pull wire.
[/ul]
Repeat until silent.
Done this way, when you untape the rudder it should sit there beautifully silent (like mine
Good luck!
Goose

I know the lower part of the hole on the firewall appears to be tight, though i am sure the rod does not touch. 5 hours on the edge today..
thanks goose!

I'd still enlarge the hole for the throttle pushrod so it is absolutely clear at all positions. A pain, I know, but a good plan.
Did you modify the return spring on the throttle?
There is a return spring on the throttle arm (opposite the horn) that you need to modify. Do NOT remove the spring!
You need to carefully cut the little hook off where it hooks onto the return arm but leave the spring there.
This way your throttle servo is not fighting the spring.
Does that make sense?

should i push the spring tip off the top side of the lever or cut it? i wanted to do it earlier but forgot about the whole thing....
Just enlarged the hole and all looks clear. Still have binding in idle position but stopped at WOT.

I cut mine and have never had an issue.
You can push it off the blade but it may at some point hook back on and become a problem.
Binding in idle position??
Do you mean the servo is chattering at the low end? Do you have any low end point adjustment left?

Under the relatively low to zero load of a throttle setup I would be suspicious... especially since you were talking about 'binding' at the bottom end however you can't leave them in a chattering condition for long periods of time.
Send it back to the manufacturer for a replacement/refund.
I'll not get into the brand wars, so replace it and move on my friend.
Bad luck... Hope you can get a replacement easily and quickly.

If it were me, I would make the small hole part of the large hole in the center of the firewall. It wont hurt anything to open that way up. Plus when you are working on the linkage, you can pull it in and out of there with the clevis/arms on it.

Crap!
I lost two throttle servos on the bench last year, one of them did exactly what yours did.
I sent it back, they inspected it and deemed it was faulty and replaced it with no charge.
I would hope that JR would do the same.
Good luck

Hey Goose,
Went flying this morning to vent out on my throttle servo burnout last night. Few circuits with some wicked spins and snaps. Finally a friend comes from behind and dares me on the lowest inverted pass.
Attempt 1 = 3 meters from the ground
Attempt 2 = almost a meter lower
Attempt 3 = inches from the ground for a good distance of 100 meters..
*Attempt 3 = wind changes from west to north, so suddenly had 15 mph tail wind....
Result= Rudder front tip, scraped for few feet and i pulled too steep that rear tip of my rudder bit the ground.....
WHAT A WEEK..... only great thing was i won the bet
Wager = Cold drink
Have a great week guys!!!!

What a week!
Better have a few drinks.
I use Hitec servos and have done for many years. I have lost two: One to mysterious failure i.e. it just stopped working, the other burned up like yours. Both replaced FOC.
I have chosen to go a little larger this time but can't remember the model number off the top of my head, will post it when I get home.
Cheers

Tumalik, for future reference. When the rudder starts to scrape the ground. Bank the wings just a little bit and apply just one click of elev. Once the rudder is in the dirt this is the only way to climb out without major dammage. It sound hard, but if you can drag the rudder it's really not.

Well it seems as though USPS have lost my fuel valve which was ordered and paid for a month ago today.
I called the supplier and it was shipped the next day.
Not complaining, but I'm astounded how difficult the simplest things can be...
There had better be some toys in the mail tonight... I have a weekend with nothing to do, which is a disaster for any airframe in my shop
Have a good one guys...

Thanks David! any opinions on throttle servos? i am currently torn between the Hitec 5645, hitec 5665 and spektrum 6030.
As you are aware, i lost my throttle servo last night.. No way will i go for the same one again.
thanks!
Goose,
Not that it would help.... I work in Saudi Arabia (great place to have a family and save). RC is a very sensitiveand controversial hobby in such a place that availabilty of materials and parts is almost ZERO. We order 80% of our stuff from the states or neighboring countries like the Emirates(dubai) or from china. Now imagine the distance and calculate all you want, numbers will always come up to a minimum of 40 -90% of the value of your items in shipping alone. Add the travel time + frustration of travel time + worry of the possibility of an item being held at customs + customs requesting you to drop by to do a little show and tell for them to release your parcel.... ARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!
Now don't think i'm painting this nasty picture and making the country look like they are ultra conservative... its just RC!!!! that is alarming to them. Now to make it even better.... i can walk in through the airport with a 50 or 100cc aircraft and they would'nt even care...
Benefits= you cherish every screw you have
cons= emotional distress when you scratch your goodies/ airplane
SUPER cons= depression when you lose an airplane
Hope you get your stuff soon!!!!! i can send you a fuel valve.... should take a week to get there

Oh forgot to add the Super MEGA cons= You will actually CRY when you lose an airplane (don't laugh! i am not ashamed to announce this). Cry because of attachment, then cry again waiting for a new one...

Bemeson,
Don't quite get your post? are we using the same engine(DLE 55) and muffler(JTEC wrap around pitts)? please elaborate ' dumb founded' ...
In regards to HEAD block / muffler cut out, i followed as per the manual. In fact the only thing that is not by the manual is my muffler head cut out which is 1.5 in x 1 inch, since its physically touching the cowl.
Thanks
