Pitts Challenger Engine Recommendation
I am building a 69.5" Miles Reed/Dave Dessecker Pitts Challenger III. Weight is supposed to be about 18# and the recommended engine size is a 50-60cc+. Does anybody have an engine recommendation?

YEA BABY!!!!! Mordib is covering mine right now! I am sure he will be here to comment shortly as he was also writing a reveiw of this one. He was installing a ZDZ-- but as for me it is a Taurus 3.2. Dave Dressler told me that a Brison 3.2 is all of the power anybody needs -- that is what he is running on his. Since he owns the company, I figure he knows what he is talking about. BTW-- Mordib has started a thread here about this plane (If you can find it)

Here I is....
Yeah a good 50-52cc oughtta be plenty on this baby...
The design is really setup for a side mount muffler, but I've been able to modify for a Pitts or a canister pipe...

Thanks! It is turning out quite nice... I purchased a vinyl cutter to do my own graphics and will be offering packages (like the Bulldog Package) to others building the plane.

RE: Pitts Challenger Engine Recommendation
Thanks for the recommendations guys. Mordib, I saw your site a couple of weeks ago. You have some great construction pictures. The covering job that you are doing looks great. It was your site that convinced me to go with the Challenger III. I got the builders kit from Dave Dessecker. I tell you, plans, canopy, landing gear, and cabanes for just $75 is a heckuva deal. I wanted a medium size gasser (has to be a biplane, I have 5) so I wouldn't have to buy a trailer. I have a Lanier Ultimate Pitts whch is very similar to the Challenger but without any dihedral in the bottom wing. It flies absolutely fantastic with a Saito 180 (glow guzzler). I like gas even at $1.75/gal.

I would recommend the Taurus 3.2 it is very powerful, beautifully built & I particularly like the fact that it has the crank supported by a rear bearing.I would appreciate if someone could advise the contact details of the person who does the partial kit. This is an ideal size aircraft for a bipe being not too large to transport around.

didnt get into what he offers, sounds like only has plans and some left over parts.

RE: Pitts Challenger Engine Recommendation
This is the response from Dave
He has been very timely and friendly over the matter.
I still handle the "Builder's Kits" for the Weeks Special, Weeks Solutions 60", 70", 77"X & 90" XX plus the 80" & 90" Extra 260's & the Challenger ll (original), Challenger ll (revised) & Challenger lll. These consist of Prints, instructions, material list, landing gear, canopy, cabanes for the Bi-planes & foam cores for the tail feathers on the 260's. I started having trouble getting the quality wood for the kits and suppliers were reluctant to supply small quantities of material. My average wood order was in the $800.00 but to obtain a cost plus price then I'd be looking at over $2000.00 cost in material. The ARF's have helped in making a decision to just supply the "Builder's Kits" only. I do have some parts on the shelf's left over from the kits and will let them go for a fare price.
The last order of wood I received from one of the suppliers, I had to send back due to the quality, "If I wouldn't use it on my own model, I wouldn't send it to anyone else"! I dropped the BLCC several years ago due to those reasons. Also, when we started doing the Custom Wing Covers, there was only 1 other mfg. doing them and to date there are over 2 dozen making wing covers. It's been a good run. Miles turned his model designs over to me back in 1995 due to some health reasons and about 3 years ago he passed away the day after putting a test flight on his personal Weeks Solution.
Regards,
Dave
