Default 1/4 scale Krier Great Lakes bipe...

Folks,
I recently got a set of Krier Great Lakes plans, from the now defunct "Model Builder" mag.
I am trying to find someone who could possibly have a copy of the building article for that plane.
It is plans # 10821, designed by Larry Scott.....Maybe someone could even give me an email address for Bill Northrup?(Believe he was the person behind Model Builder?)
Really a very cool bipe, HUGE plane!
Thanks for any help,
Pud

Pud,

I just started on my Great Lakes (plan # 10821) I don't know if you check this post any more, yours is probably flying by now. I'm working on the tail feathers, kind of figuring her out as I go. Hope yours was/is a good ship.

Shawn,

I have acquired the same planes. In addition, I found Larry Scott and he still has the Cowl and Wing pant molds. He is going to make me some.

Keep posting your build progress. I am interested in any insights that you care to share.

Jim,

Great to hear from you. I'll have to see if I can get some pics to show. I have to warn you, I'm THE slooowest builder ever. I'm making a fiberglass cowl using a 10" bowl from Walmart as the mold, should hide most of the engine. I don't have the construction article, so I'm making a lot of it up as I go. So far I'm planning on using a Homelite I converted, adding tail brace wires, and landing/flying wires. Look forward to hearing how yours is coming along.

Shawn,

I have a copy of the build article. I won't be able to get it to you until Thursday due to work travel. Are you interested? If you give me a fax number I can fax it.

Otherwise I will need an address.

Jim,

I'd appreciate a copy of that build article! My fax # is: 815-389-1763. I'm going to try and load a photo to see how it goes. Hopefully this will show the engine and cowl mold. Thanks again for the info!

Good! Looks like I figured out how to post pics. Here are the tail surfaces. I'll post more as I get them!

Jim,

Started on the lower L.H. wing panel afew days back. It's coming right along. I made a couple of small changes along the way. I installed 1/8" shear webbing in front of the 1/4" sq. spars. Took less than half a sheet of 3" x 36", and really stiffened the wing. I'll be making some small changes in the tip, to round the sheeting off of the end rib. I'm planning to run a servo in each bottom panel for the ailerons. I'll put up some pics later tonight.

Hi All,
I too am just starting to build up one of these birds from the same set of plans. I plan to power mine with a 62cc Horner twin. Looks like we might have a builders support group going here. I also could use a copy of the construction artical. Some how over the years and many moves, my orriginal set that came with the plans went south. I can recieve a large email , Ma Bell FAX or how ever you are able.

Now we're talking! I'll make enough mistakes for ALL 3 of us......
Actually, I haven't picked up the X-acto knife in close to 10 years, this is my 7th or 8th plane, and first R/C scratchbuild. Charging ahead fearless. Got the Walmart bowl cowl done......a bit heavy, but you could haul rocks in it![:@] I'll put up some pics tonight.

A quick question??? Is either wing supposed to have dihedral?? Or both built flat??

Shawn,

The build article states for the bottom wing, "Glue the two halves together with one inch of dihedral under each tip and reinforce ...." The top wing is a single piece built flat on the plans.

Jim,

Thanks, part of my build article is missing half the page. That's probably where the info was. I trust my fax machine is to blame for that.[:@]

Thanks again, pics coming soon.

Jim -
Thank you so much for the article. It is really appreciated. If we'd done this last week - maybe we could have hooked up while you were here. Thanks again. Take Care

Here are some pics of the wing tip, the wing sheeting going on, and the cowl. Black lines in the cowl are the marker used to mark the raw glass. I tried to "fatten up" the wing tip profile a bit, I hope the pics show it. The white ribs are foam core (artist board). They work pretty well. Made my first dumb mistake too! Didn't run a tube for the servo wires.[:@] Easy fix though. Think I'll work on the fuse for a bit now.

I've got most of the fuselage parts cut. The cowl is ready to prime, and I shaved the excess weight down a bit. I'll get some more pics up later this week as the fuse comes together. Just wondering if anyone else knows how this thing flies, or any changes to be made? Thanks again guys, for the input and support.

Shawn,

If you don't have it already you might want to consider picking up Harry Higley's Bipe book. He has great tips and ideas for modifications and alignment for a number of kit bipes. These ideas could be used on this build.

My experience with other bipes I have built is that the alignment is key. Like all bipes, if the incidence is not set right plane won't fly right.

You are making great progress. Keep the photos coming.

I've heard great things about his books, and it IS Christmas after all. Think I'll be ordering that book! Snow is falling like crazy here, great excuse to stay in and build....... After the plowing is done of course![:'(]

Hi guy's. Hey the Great Lakes has got to be my all time favorite bipe. I scratched a .40 size one three years ago and SHE IS HANGING IN THE LIVING ROOM! My wife LOVES it. Here are a couple pics I thought you might like for some real detailing. I have lots more of all different configurations. The GL has Been modified in many ways by the !QUOT!Barn Stormers!QUOT! over the years. I'll keep checking this post to see your progress. If you want a CD or some more pics e-mailed to you just let me know!

Well, I finally have most of the parts cut out for the fuse. I spent the last few days working on the instrument panel. Finally finished it. The overlay is 3/32 balsa, stained and cleared. The pilot's throttle on the left is the Rx switch, and the map case on the right is the charge plug. This is my first attempt at a semi-scale aircraft build, and I'm enjoying the detailing.
